  • beware if this site ships orders from Hong Kong or China.

    • any reason, or is it just china = bad reasoning?

  • 100% Stock are all shipped in Australia.

We are a Australia-based business who are trying to cut your prescription glasses cost. The prescription glasses you order from us have no different from the one you pay $500 at OPSM. We are just keeping it cheaper.

  • OPSM is over priced. This 1 will come handy in the next couple of months.

Freeoptical, I am not sure how good you are, but your web site is really dodgy.

If I select Men's Frames on your front page, then select Rimless Frames, I am taken to page under Female -> Rimless Frames, and no frames are shown on the page. Also if I select Men's Frames from the front page, I am unable to move pass page 2. If I select page 3, nothing happens. Also selecting to display 4 frames or 50 frames on one page, would show just 4 frames.

It is not a good way to start your business.

Edit, I tried on both Firefox and IE7

    • uhm, true the website is super wierd. You need to fix the website so it looks more professional man, if you want to lure more customers.

    • ha ha, the more i surf this free optical site, the funnier i feel. Contents are put everywhere and in no logical order, and links rarely work. It's a -ve experience.

  • Also do not try to mislead consumer by saying you are "100% Australian owned and operated business", when all your products are imported from overseas.

You say you cut down the middle men, but in deed you are the middle men.

    • hahaha, yeah shame on you for not building your own frames or lobbying for the manufacturers to be moved to Australia.

I think that is a reasonable consumer request.

Iamcoke you realise that no company can really be 100% Australian if you want to define it like that.

        Understand, then don't trump it.

Being a middle men, running a pure import business online is not something they need to trump about being 100% Australian owned and operated.

        • -1

There's always going to be a middle man unless you mine the raw materials and forge the frames yourself so what are you complaining about? Some middle men have been cut out of the process so it's a fair statement.

Plus it is 100% Australian Owned and Operated. It doesn't claim to be 100% Australia Made frames. Has an ABN and pays tax to the Australian government doesn't it? More grassroots 'Australian' then 90% of the brands and shops that are posted.

SpecSavers are also worth checking out if you want a physical store. They are by far the cheapest retail prescription glasses store, and you can get two pairs of FCUK brand glasses for $199 for example. Can you tell I've been glasses shopping lately?

  • The UK based SpecSavers offer value glasses. However, not when you consider adding anti scratch, anti reflection, UV light cut and thinner lenses (high index lens). What they market and what you will pay can be quite different. You will need to make a informed decision.

At FreeOptical.com.au, you will get anti scratch, anti reflection, UV block free of charge and slightly more cost with thinner and lighter lenses.

There will be series of campaigns to give more value to people. (Stay tuned)

We are one of the many Australian small businesses who willing to compete bigger players in the industry.

At FreeOptical.com.au, we are simply offering you more choices.

    • It is true that I ended up paying more for my transition lenses and anti-reflective coating than the frames and glass actually cost, so it is something to consider.

Another thing to consider is that I have a big head, and 3/4 of the frames didn't fit my head, so it is nice to try the glasses on before you buy.

I'll give you a positive as I am a fan of being able to buy anything and everything online lol

    • I agree. I bought 2 pairs of $299 frames/glasses from Specsavers. The 2nd pair of frames is free.

But add anti scratch, anti reflection and high index lenses to both pairs (you have to pay the lense additions twice) and you walk out with 2 sets of glasses for ~$750

Still cheaper than OPSM but that isn't saying much…

      • That said, if you just want to be able to see straight, you can get a one set of glasses from Specsavers for $59 no more to pay.

        • how much do they charge to put lenses in if you bring your own?

          • @Olliesh: If you want to put a new lenses on your frames, just drop me a email support[@]freeoptical.com.au and we will give you the quote asap.

We will update the site to make this info available to public.

    It's a rather hard website to navigate…

  • As a site, it isn't user friendly, but prices are fairly economical for a place that ships locally. I just bought two pairs of glasses (one polarised) for less than the prices on FreeOptical, but they were neither shipped local nor brand names. However, I'm giving it a positive as we need more competition with glasses dispensers…! OPSM = Over Priced Specs, Mate!

  • Site looks okay but linking is kinda weird (Rimess on men's? Titanium frames= empty page?. And hm, nice selection, though wow at the prices. Still less than OPSM, aye, but I can still remember buying glasses in China — they made it on the facilities and it was like..50 bucks..let's hope my eyes don't get worse for a bit. XD

P.S. 30th March blog post — perhaps 'perfect' instead of 'a perfrect'? A few other typos on other articles too..

  • I purchased a pair of glasses from a similar online site (not this one), it was based in Hong Kong I believe. I wasn't very happy with what I received. The lenses were terrible, felt plasticy and it wasn't right for my vision despite my best effort to select the right boxes in defining my eye-problems and i did refer to a prescription for my existing glasses.
Personally I wouldn't bother ordering glasses online again. I bought two pairs from SpecSavers also, original price $299 but when you add the extras it came to be about $460 or something, i got transition only in one of them…..
I was happy with their service and their products, but admittedly I paid more than I expected to.

    • what was frame quality like?

      • i had ordered titanium frames, they felt very light but at the same time had a very fragile feel to it. I didn't mind them too much but again I was expecting something better.

i think this is a bit like clothe or shoe shopping, you want to try it out first before purchasing otherwise you may have second thoughts afterward…

  • Same as eBay and other optical sites online, you won't able to see and touch it physically. However, to give you a good indication, our 250+ frames are as good as you those priced $150+ to $400 (frame only) in OPSM and SpecSaver. Try a similar style at the store, to get some ideas how fit it is for you.

Frames at FreeOptical are not those low-end $59 complete glasses package on High street which you hardly use (poor quality ugly looking frames with cheap lenses that can scratch easily).
