  • I am pretty sure 15% off overprice laptop is not a bargain.

$594 for an i3 with 4GB ram? and it is an acer just to top it off.

    • lol i remember when I got my samusng laptop with i7 ivybridge, with 4gb ram and 750gb hd and 1gb amd gpu from jbhifi last year for $600.

Are laptop prices going up? I am sure I bought two laptops for my two brothers a couple of years ago, going on leads from Ozbargain, a Lenovo and an Acer, virtually identical specs as the $594 Acer here, for less than $400.

In fact I think Lenovo doubled the RAM to 8GB for free- the Acer $594 only has 4GB.

    • Yes I think they are. I posted a laptop I purchased on here 3 years ago for $1500 and it has better specs than some of the $1500 laptops today, excluding USB 3.0.

The newer generation i3/5/7 processors have more processing power per clock and are also more power efficient.

    • No i dont think laptop price is going up. This is just ridiculous pricing from dicksmith. They are not exactly decreasing in price but not increasing. Price has been stalling for the last 2 year.

An i3 acer with 4GB ram is still around $400 at MSY. Even though spec might look the same but you are getting new generation process which perform better than older one.

Dick Smith… arrghh. Rip-off retailer!! Can't recall when the last time I shop from this store. Example: Sennheiser RS 120 Wireless Headphones still retails for $249 on this store, while the average RRP A$130. THAT's RRP average, compared from other equivalent reputable stores.

You'll be amazed how this store makes profit, get their latest company financial report - been public for almost a year.

RRP price may be jack up several times before discounted. Their most popular Eneloop battery rechargeable 50% sale is still highly profitable at best.

No particular despise against making profit, hey nobody works for free - but this kind of vulture habits of ripping off consumer and jacking up prices to unreasonable level should never be tolerated.

I am struggling to understand how a store which is not compulsory for you to patronise, can be described as a "rip-off".

You don't shop there - your choice - good.

Many others obviously do - their choice - don't appear to feel ripped-off - also good.

Although your very first deal here is from Dick Smith, and that was a pretty sweet deal too (Kindle Fire HD $229 back in July 2013). Moreover if you actually take a look at the DickSmith deals posted on OzBargain — many are actually pretty good.

Last 30 days stats — 63 deals with +42.6 avg votes. Probably one of the most popular merchants out there amongst the OzBargainers.

      • Oh dear! Only a few short months ago.

What has happened in the meantime, always? Do you live in a small town where Dick's is the only electrical/electronics/IT outlet?

  • I purchased an i5 new generation haswell acer 6 months ago from dicks for $429 so yes prices seem to be going up imo

    Dicksmith's 15%-off and savemore-coupon trick

Take the following as an example
    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/laptops-notebooks/acer-aspire-15…

    It was selling for $699.
Sorry DS, you are selling $200 more than the regular price of $499.

Then DS decided to have 15% off to lure people.
    $699 - 15% = $594
Sorry DS, you are selling $95 more than the regular price of $499.

Then DS decided to have "savemore" coupon to lure more people.
    $594 - 10% ("savemore" coupon) = $534.6
Sorry DS, you are still selling $35.6 more than the regular price of $499.

  • @tg: that's exactly what i'm talking about.

Jacking up prices before discounting is common practice in any retailers, both local or overseas. Just don't make it ridiculous. No wonder shoppers going overseas as their first choice, then these vulture retailers grabbing headlines complaining about having tough time locally. About time to face global competition folks.

Consumers buy in brick/mortar stores -> RBA can see the true spending of Australian people -> RBA pushes up rate -> Consumers with debt suffer

Consumers buy online -> RBA cannot see the true spending of Australian people -> RBA keeps the rate low -> Consumers with debt are happy :)
