  • RRP is $999 http://www.sony.com.au/product/ht-m3 . Good price.

      Most places sell for <$750.

    The 7.2 is better priced.

    • How much and where?

    • +2

Are you suggesting that the 7.2 can be purchased for less than $499.95?

    • I've mainly seen the 7.2 of this system close to the $1K mark, so not sure how that is better priced at almost double the cost, unless there are some major spec upgrades in it.

  • Nice look. Too big for me alas

  • will this blow women's cloth off on full volume?

Not if she's an audiophile ;-)

Good luck getting the Mrs to give the ok for those things in any living space. For an extra $100 there are soundbars that would do a better job for most purposes.

1200w @10% THD ouch unless you want your ears to bleed, it would only be around 150w full range into 8 ohms not including subwoofers.
A center channel with a single full range driver, no tweeter I'm sure that will sound really good, not!

  • I'm sure this must just be an oversight but the specs don't mention the ability to decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master audio.

    • It looks like it may not support TrueHD, DTS HD-MA however it does support upto 7.1 LPCM via HDMI so you would just need to set your Blu-ray player to decode TrueHD & DTS HD-MA to LPCM and it should work fine.

  • Total Power Output: 1200W
    Power Consumption: 175W

How can this thing output more power than it draws from the grid?

Terry Pratchet explains these things well:

there is a little imp inside jogging on a hamster wheel.

  • This is just like other sony gear- it's big, brash and loud. It has it's target market and may do fine for watching action movies but there are plenty of other systems which offer more fidelity and quality in a smaller discrete package. I personally went with a samsung HTIB (the blu ray set with the vacuum amps) and found it to be perfect for movies and some music.

I got the 7.2 version of this system. I can recommend it. Other people have mentioned that it was potentially too bass heavy etc, but you can tweak it to get it sounding great. I use it for gaming with the XBox and for watching movies and TV series (5.1 normally, but watched the hobbit in 7.1) and it excels at this.

It's also great for music, but, that's personal preference, I normally listen to rock / metal using a macbook mini displayport to HDMI on the receiver.
