Looks like great value for a light & compact notebook with 8+ hours battery life, and which still has decent CPU, RAM and ports (HDMI, USB x 3, Gigabit ethernet, audio jack). A lot of forum posts bemoan the woeful 2GB RAM of an earlier offering. This one comes with 4GB. There are several reports of successful upgrade to 8GB RAM, and of successful replacement of HDD with SSD.

The CPU in this model is a Haswell dual core Pentium, which looks pretty respectable (Passmark CPU Mark score 1891 according to www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php). Beware the similar model with a Celeron N2815 CPU, which is Atom based and much slower (Passmark CPU Mark score 891).

I ordered one with no options and it has an estimated delivery date of 10 March. I hope it doesn't really take that long.
[Edit] Delivery date is 4 March.

Good find for people with good eyesight. Big plus for small screens W8/8.1 is a touch screen like on this model,

quick pinch and zoom for enlarging font for people like me with failing eyesight ( too stubborn to get glasses ).

  • Display 11.6 inch LED Backlit Touch Display with >>>>>Truelife<<<< and HD resolution (1366 x 768)

    Glossy screen, defective by design.

    • Are there non-glossy touch screens? A sales rep told me a touch screen has to be glossy due to some technical limitations.

Sales rep doesn't make sense considering that you can put matte screen protectors over the top of glossy tablet/phone screens and they work perfectly fine.

To prove the point further, here's a matte touch screen on an ultrabook. http://ultrabooknews.com/tag/matt-screen/

I quess you can always apply a matte screen protector to a glossy surface, but attaching a glossy protector to a matte surface may mean you wont get the same visual clarity as a glossy screen.

  • Add $120 for a 2-year warranty.

Or, is it reasonable to expect a 2-year life from this laptop, therefore, free statutory warranty for 2 years?

I wonder whether we could email DELL and ask whether it is reasonable to expect for this laptop to last 2 years. If they "yes", that will be good evidence in the event of claiming the statutory warranty.

i dont believe the cpu is a haswell, it doesnt begin with a 4xxx

  • This looks pretty good, if it looks good after some more research I'll jump for one.

I'm hooked on the 11.6" size since I got the HP Pavilion dm1-4108au cheap from JB 18 months ago (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/73203) which has served me fine for everyday use.

If only I were going overseas again soon, I could get some more of that TRS love.

  • Currently only $359 on the Dell Outlook site for a 1.4ghz REFURBISHED one
replace the ram with 8gb single sodimm 1.35v and a 7mm SSD and a nice little basic computer :)

  • Is this good for an HTPC? Support 3d Blu-Ray?

    • Have the same question. HTPC probably OK but 3D blu-ray not sure. Intel CPU does not claim Intru3D feature. Can anyone else confirm whether it has the performance required to playback full HD frame packed via HDMI 1.4 to a 3D display?

  • Are these 11.6" screens big enough for everyday use?

A friend/employee of mine is looking to get a laptop for Uni, I like this but she was worried its too small.

    • Obviously that comes down to personal preference and all the usual laptop trade-offs - screen size, weight, price, performance, connectivity, battery life, etc.

For the past couple of years my daughter used a 11.6" Acer Aspire 1830T under the take-home laptop scheme at her high school. She was happy enough with the screen size, and apparently so were her school friends. Now she's starting uni and wanted something similarly light and portable, and that's why I bought one of these.

That said, I'll probably offer to get her a 23" or 24" screen to plug into it while she's using it at home.

  • NO backlit keyboard i can see so -1
    Glossy low rez screen -1

Thanks but touch on win8 is horrible as all the underlying apps are windows and not designed for touch, so ill pass and keep my AIR for another few years yet… Sometimes you get what you pay for and yes i have an acer 12" touch win8 laptop my brother gave me and it sucks monkeys balls too…

  • What would u suggest is better this notebook or a asus transformer t100 book?
    thanks guys!!

    • I was actually thinking about the exact same thing.

The T100 has a weaker processor (but quad core as compared to dual core on the dell one), won't matter much I'd say.
Also it can be used as a tablet on its own, but that also makes it un-upgradeable. It only has 2GB RAM and 64GB Flash HDD. I think after windows and office it only has around 30GB free space. It does have a microSD card slot, but the speed will be very slow.

The Dell Inspiron 11 however, is fully upgradeable. Put an SSD on this and it's pretty much a quick little machine. You can also upgrade the RAM if you think it's not enough.

Other than that, it's all about preferences. I personally think the Dell is more sturdy than the T100 which means it will probably last longer
