  • damn beat me too it. pretty good deal next closest is 310.

wonder how these things would go as a media PC… chuck a USB blue ray on em.. wonder if they are fast enough.

  • edit: removed.

  • From memory blu ray movies won't play on Linux, you have to rip it to a drive and play it from there (kinda defeats the point). So I'd research that if that's what you were heading for.

It would be a pretty need frontend for Mythtv though!

    • ahh good points nah not getting it for myself, just curious, got a old dell as a media PC but its pretty big and clunky in comparison to something like that.

doubt they would be fast enough, but should be fine for divx xvid dvd etc.

  • The intel celeron M 900mhz cpu does not have the capacity to play blu-ray. Even the netbooks with the faster Atom 1.6ghz cpu are only able to play a maxamum of 720p. Only the latest top of the line expensive models with the faster chipset and cpu, suport 1080p HD playback such as the Asus eeepc N10J.

    • +1

Not to mention that Eee PC 701 does not even have 900Mhz (it's a downclocked Celeron). Even watching YouTube feels jumpy sometimes.

It's a great light weight and cheap netbook (less than 1kg) that's on the end of spectrum where's it's closer to a MID than a laptop. 800x480 is a bit lacking for running some applications.

  • +1

The CPU is not suitable for HD content as mentioned above.

    • +1

Lol…why would you play HD on a 7 inch 800x480 anyway?!

      • +2

        To be cool

      • you wouldn't! :-)

but you would want to play it on your LCD to which you'll hookup the 701…

I was planning on getting this also, but based on the comment about the CPU and playing HD will skip.

Also, I popped into Officeworks before and they had the 8GB SSD version for ~$320

  • i agree with COTD on this one, it's all about being realistic in the capacity of this computer. I know people who have bought netbooks, then wondered why COD4 won't work on it. They're designed for internet/word and thats about it. And for $260, it's not bad… just gotta justify it to the parents….

  • I've got a couple of these. Nice price - just be realistic about what you expect to be able to do with it.

On one I replaced the default Xandros installation with eeebuntu (a cut down version of Ubuntu for netbooks). Works well and my kids find it great for internet browsing.

    • Yes Xandros is getting a bit PITA and mine has been running Debian 5 + LXDE for a while (more light weight than XFCE on eeeubuntu).

Edit: And works great with my Nokia E71 over $2.50 bluetooth dongle bought from DealExtreme as well :)

  • I have two of these, one I carry everywhere, the other is connected to a 32" LCD as a browser-in-a-box.
It does what it was designed to do very well, but it won't play full HD.

    Horses for courses.

  • i'm using one as we speak. They're far better then you think, I upgraded it to 2gb RAM and put eeeBuntu on it and it works great.

Do you really expect a sub-300 dollar computer to play blu-ray, like come on…

  • not sure if they even have a signal out input guys, i know the acer one doesn't

anyhooo i'm pretty sure you can pick these up in hardly normal for this price

    • signal out? it has a vga- the blue thing if that's what you mean?
      And they're about $300 -> $320 usually.

  • i ended up buying one, i'm going to buy a 8GB USB and run either eeebuntu or xp.

    • Go for eeeBuntu - You won't regret it:

      eee PC 701
      eeeBuntu
2GB RAM - which I bought for $50 from shoppingsquare
Logitech M305 Wireless mouse with nano receiever - $48 from JB
Nano bluetooth USB - $3 from focalprice

Honestly the best experience with any computer I've ever used.

      • thanks man, ok i'll download it when it arrives.
btw does it accept the whole 2GB DDR2??? i can see sites that only allow the model to upgrade to 1GB

        • if you keep it on the default OS (modified version of Xandros) and put 2GB DDR2 in, it will only read as 1GB.

Pretty much every other OS will read it properly.

    $288 - free shipping

and like i said, it's $274 in harvey norman penrith

  • has anyone got theirs yet?

  • The 3 we ordered arrived today (Friday). All set up and working OK.

Now I just need to find a cheap USB mobile data card that has linux drivers.. want to go prepay for data.. no preference on network as long as data works around Brisbane and Gold Coast..

    • Not sure about the USB mobile cards, but with my HSDPA Nokia phone, it's just a matter of plugging in the USB connection, and run a wvdial script — and it will just fire up PPP to make connection.

      • I plugged in my 2 year old USB 3 Mobile data card and the linux OS recognised it and even had "3 Australia" listed as a provider.. all set up and working in a couple of mins.

I went to a few phone stores and 3 appear to offer the best value prepaid data plans for the low usage we require (this laptop is just to access a single website to track the location of a truck with GPS).. $15 for 500MB with 30 day expiry. So hopefully the latest model data cards are as easy to set up.. otherwise I will swap sims and use the new data card and give my parents my old one which already proved working.

        • Well that's nice :) I know some of the newer distros with proper desktop environment (Gnome or KDE) can auto detect the USB 3G modems. Too bad I am running LXDE and have to write my own script :P
