Rocksmith 2014 Cable Bundle $59 at JB HiFi (XBox and PS3) [In Store Only]

610

For those who have recently purchased electric guitars https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/126573
or otherwise have a guitar lying around that they never quite got around to learning how to play here is a deal for you…

JB HiFi currently have the Rocksmith 2014 game on sale for $59 which is the best price I have seen anywhere on-line or local stock.

Rocksmith is a "game" that teaches you to play guiter. A bit like the old Rock Star/Guitar Hero games but using a real guitar (guitar not included but it can be used with any standard electric guitar with a 1/4 inch jack). As a "game" it is a bit meh but as a tool to help you learn guitar and motivate you to practice more it is quite good.

Not going to cut and paste a more detailed description, if you're interested look it up:
http://rocksmith.ubi.com/rocksmith/en-AU/home/index.aspx?gcl…

When you consider the cable alone currently retails for $38 I think this is a pretty good deal.

PS3 version also available

Playstation 3 version at the same price.

Already mentioned it (last line of my post)

      • +1

        Sorry, my mistake!

  • +1

any news on a pc version? mostly after it for the real tone cable.

    • +3

      http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/game/accessories/rocksmith-re…

$37.99 just for the cable, the master race is getting screwed in this deal.. might be worth buying the cable and waiting for a Steam special for the game itself? Or obtain it another way..

      • I swear I saw the cable selling on ebay last year cheaper than currently going rates. But definitely a route to investigate as Amazon had this game pretty cheap during recent sales.

        • cbfed looking now but im pretty sure when i looked last year ebay had the needed cables for like 10 bucks

  • +5

I bought this for PS3 in December for $80 from JB - it's worth every dollar! This is definitely the best way to learn rock guitar or bass, while also having fun.

Every song in the game is broken down into sections, and you can increase/decrease the speed and difficulty for each section until you have learnt how to play it. The range of songs make you learn many of the basic guitar techniques such as tremolo, vibrato, hammer-ons, pull-offs, palm muting etc. and the note detection and tuning system is very accurate.

The songs from the first game can be imported into Rocksmith 2014 (along with a $14 transfer cost) if you have a game save from the original Rocksmith. Note that this new version is drastically improved from the original, so if you were put off by the original you owe it to yourself to try 2014.

If you have a guitar or bass which you have put aside and lost interest in, Rocksmith 2014 will really get you back into it!

    • +2

Totally agree awesome game got me out of my guitar rut. Though I must say I find it a million times easier to learn a song just using guitar tabs

  • +2

My game of the year last year. Best game related purchase I've ever made in that regard. If you have even the slightest interest in learning guitar, get on board.

PC version has custom songs, too, which is the platform I've been playing on. The cable is platform agnostic, if I remember correctly.

Also, be aware of the lag some audio/video set ups can have. Ideally you want the audio to be analogue in order to not introduce delay between input and display. Wasn't a problem for my PC setup, but if you have an all Hdmi line of connections, it may introduce some uncorrectable lag/delay which would be a bummer!

    • I read that plugging your guitar into your amp and then into your PC/PS3/etc helps heaps. At most, you just get a delay pedal effect going.

    • Was looking at the PC version for much the same reasons (the lag issue on XBox and custom games for PC). Ended up going with the XBox just to keep all the kids "game" related stuff together in one room.

Hopefully it won't be too badly affected by the lag, will wait and see.

    • +1

The cable is definitely platform agnostic.

      • Does that mean the cable is interchangable or non interchangable?

        • It means, you can use the cable in the Xbox, PS3 or the PC.

        • +2

It stays up all night wondering whether there is a god.

    • Band Hero World Tour for XBOX 360 has the ability to adjust the response so perhaps this does too?

    • I bought this game from ozgameshop just after xmas… fun times!

  • +1

So, if you don't have a guitar, consider this xbox 360 or PS3 pack from eBay which includes the Epiphone Les Paul Jr. for total of $199.

    • +4

This looks like the first game

      • Yep, that link isn't for the 2014 version.

  • Excellent game.

  • +4

For those interested you can get custom songs here http://forums.smithyanvil.com/ (you need to sign up to see them).

    • WHOAH! Had no idea you could use custom songs in RS!

      • +1

PC version only (I think XBox but only with a mod chip).

        • fine with me as I have PC version.

  • if you have the real tone cable from the original game, do you need the cable enclosed with this game?

    • No. The cable hasn't changed AFAIK.

    • +1

Game will work with the cable from the original game.

Though if you have 2 cables you can play the game multiplayer
(providing you have 2 guitars or a guitar and bass).

The cables are expensive though, so (if you upgrade from the original version) and don't want to keep the new cable as a spare or for multiplayer use you could probably sell it on eBay.

      • I guess this raises the q whether it is cheaper to just buy the game on its own or do as you suggest.

I can't seem to find the game on its own however. Ozgameshop has rocksmith 2014 solus version which looks like it but it's more expensive than this deal. Hmm.

        • I spoke to JB Hifi Rep this morning and they told me that the 2014 physical version of the game was not available without the cable. You can get the game digitally, but apparently it is $90.

  • Damn, i'm broke, but now broker :)

Had to have it, thanks :)

My Les Paul has been neglected of late, as has the x-box.

My 9 year old son is going to love this :)

    Cheers

    Dale

  • How would people rate this for actually learning properly? I have an acoustic/electric guitar that I put down a year ago and haven't bothered to pick it up again.

    • +1

I'm in the same boat and decided to give it a go after reading this article:

      http://www.usgamer.net/articles/does-rocksmith-2014-really-w…

    • I am also interested in knowing if you can use an acoustic guitar with electric output with this game.

      • +1

You can use an acoustic with a jack, however, I have noticed some have pickup issues to do with the sound levels. This was in the old verison though. You may want to check out steam or the official forums to find out a more wide view.

    • It's a lot easier to find time to practice, thats for sure. You still have to put in the hours and memorize the song, but it does a pretty good job of making you learn properly.

    • +1

I have been playing for 3 months using Rocksmith and an online tutor site called Justinguitar because I had an old acoustic laying around.
Rocksmith is awesome! Learned so much and the muscle memory sets in so well.
Plus it is fun so you want to play non stop.

      • +1

Justin's a legend, taught me sultans of swing!

  • +1

It looks I'm he only one, but while Rocksmith 2014 is a great game, I don't find it an awesome learning tool. Much prefer to watch and listen to some of the great guitar teachers on YouTube and follow their lessons.

    • +1

I agree there are some awesome teachers/guitar lessons available for free on the net.

Youtube however doesn't give any feedback and I'm hoping the Rocksmith game will provide the necessary motivation to practice and continue to improve without the self discipline required to just sit and follow the YouTube lessons.

In an ideal world, private lessons and/or YouTube plus Rocksmith would certainly get you there much faster, but even with Rocksmith alone I think you can get there and more likely to have the motivation to stick with it than with just the YouTube lessons.

  • +1

A perk of the cable included - is it also acts as a decent quality audio interface. Obviously won't compare to top of the line stuff - but it's a nice perk; especially for the price. So if you ever feel like mucking around with recording or amp emulation - this is a good buy.

Speaking of amp emulation - you can much around with IK Multimedia's Amplitube; which is supposed to emulate popular amps including the Mesa Boogie line (metal), Vox AC30s, Orange Rockerverbs, Twin Reverbs etc. For someone whose ear isn't accustomed to the real deal - this is something nice to mess around with :)

  • +1

Any recommendations for a basic guitar to go with this?

    • +1

How much are you looking to pay at most? You can get away with quite alot second hand - but if you want to buy brand new - Allans sells a blue Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top (the heck of a nice guitar on the cheap) for around $399; and you could probably get them to throw in a bag and a decent setup too.

Yamaha Pacificas are nice in the low end market too - if you're into a strat style guitar. (avoid the strat squire)

Really depends how much you got to spend - any particular style of music you like/any bands or guitarists you aspire to? ;)

      • +1

I have ways found Yamaha stuff to be of decent quality on the cheap. Notting like the old RG series electrics though, they used to go for up to a thousand back I the day but they stopped making them,, included active circuitry and their own locking

      • I had the same dilemma 20 years ago and got a Yamaha Pacifica and could not be happier - the build quality was top notch. Years later I upgraded the pickups, which turned it into what many have rated as a professional instrument.
I agree that if you're into the Gibson Les Paul sound / style then a good Epiphone will definitely be your friend.
Any guitar you get will need to be set up so try to get a deal that includes it.

      • +1

you can get a used les paul 100 for around $180 on gumtree - which is a much better guitar in terms of build - maple top - and the 650T humbucker is really damn nice too.

    • I think he's asking cheapest. Cheapest is JB Hifi, $95 for a Monterey when they have a 20% offer on 'scoop' items.

It's a no-name brand. Very very very very basic guitar. And from that you can later decide whether you want to bother to get a good one.

Otherwise, the pack linked above is not much more and includes picks (and maybe a bag?)

      • On that note I am pretty sure Aldi did a combo with amp, cable and maybe other stuff for 129, but don't quote me

    • +2

I'll be straight up here. Don't buy a shit guitar for you first guitar. You will hate it and hate playing guitar. You don't have to pay top dollar either.

I have a Les Paul Studio ($$$ and heavy as all hell) and a Made in Japan Telecaster (which is now my baby) and I just bought my nephew a cheap Squier Telecaster for Christmas as he is learning. List price was $430 or something, but go it plus a bag, strap, cable, capo, picks and intonation setup (to make sure it is in tune) for the same price.

There are basically a few levels of Squier guitars, from terrible (Low $200) to great (under $1000) but to be honest, I found the series that was around high $300/low $400 to be really, really good quality for what you are paying. You can notice the lack of quality hardware on the super cheap ones, but that little extra money goes a long way. Sure it isn't the bees knees, but you are just learning. You will find what you really like later.

Personally, I would get the Stratocaster in that price range. It is a bit more versatile than the Telecaster or the Les Paul style guitars.

      http://www.bettermusic.com.au/guitars/electric-guitars/squie…

Lookit that, $480 to $360 and you haven't even picked it up. Take a guitarist mate in and get a bunch of other stuff and offer them the sale price :D

If you pay the sticker price on a guitar, or any instrument, you are a sucker.

  • +1

Is cable included? Can't see it on the picture.

  • +2

Rocksmith nut here, and first time poster. be kind. I have both versions, play mostly bass. The 2014 is sooo much better than the original, in terms of loading, gui etc. They really learnt a lot from the first outing. You can (on steam, at least) import the original version songs over for $10. Yes, you can use an acoustic, with a pickup inside the body. The cable is definitely more expensive this year, glad I can use my old one. No-one else has mentioned session-play (i think its called that), you pick instruments drums, synth etc, and start playing, and it plays along! amazing tech, like jamming with a band. No lag with my PC setup. And headphones work great for late nights. tons of amps, games, and its a real bass or guitar you are playing, not one of the SEVEN plastic rockband guitars i saw at Vinnies today

    • I'm very disappointed that they charge $10 for that. It should be free.

      • +3

It's to do with re-licensing the songs again for a different game.

  • Is this game any good for proficient players?

    • It is fun and adds enjoyment to playing if you are a bit bored of playing same old guitar over and over, though I have found it's easier to just learn songs from tabs

    • +1

even if you can play well - it's good fun - especially with friends (you can challenge them like in guitar hero haha). even if you know the song top to bottom; you get scored on your accuracy of the notes, etc - trying to beat your 'score' actually proves to be a challenge. the 'tabs' are accurate too (even the cemetary gates solo is at least 98% accurate)

[i should really do marketing for ubi lol]

    • I played nylon string guitar for a couple of years before picking up this. I thought I was halfway capable - but this game is good at taking you out of your comfort zone. I now realise that I am a crap guitarist.

One of the things that has improved with my playing is that I am more proficient higher up the fretboard.

It would be better though if RS actually named the notes that you were playing, as you played them.

  • One other cheap way to get the cable is to find a pre-owned copy of the first game from EB, but they're pretty rare. I picked up the first game on 360 with a cable just after Christmas for around $28. At that price I was actually anticipating it would just be the game disc, not the cable too.

I also agree with all the other posters who have pointed out that the 2014 version is far superior, especially once you import the songs from the original.

    • The cables are known to break easily. Not recommended to get one second hand.

  • +1

Goddammit. I passed up on the JB Mastercard $30 gift card deal because I wasnt sure if I would get the code in time for the boxing day sales. And I just bought RS 2014 from ozgameshop for $80. I didnt even get the $10 off code because I didnt see it in time.

$50 down, my ozbargaining stars have clearly not aligned this year in 2014 :-(

  • Is this compatable with a left handed guitar?

    • Yep. They give you the option of choosing one way or the other. The instruction videos are mostly right handed but no big deal.

      • +1

Strung upside down for a left-handed mother….ing genius, Jimi Hendrix! ;)

        • +1

          Ooohwww!

      • If you’d like instructional videos displayed during the game to show a left-handed player, select Options > Visual Settings > Mirror Video.

Interesting fact Blues legend Albert King was not only left-handed, he was an upside-down player, playing right-handed guitars simply flipped over, so the low E string was nearest his feet (unlike Hendrix who generally played right-handed guitars that were turned upside down and restrung for left-hand playing).

There are a couple of Albert King songs available as DLC in Rocksmith, but I dont think Rocksmith uses the upside down technique.

        • Cheers! Win for lefties like me

        • ah, clever.

I did invert the strings in the settings to show the low e down the bottom, ie from the perspective of you looking down on it…found it way more intuitive

  • It's tempting to get this for my xbox/tv setup but I'm highly dubious of the latency over xbox, & I can't actually find anything that says this version includes the cable..? Rocksmith recommends running RCA audio cables from the xbox aswell as HDMI to the TV for video, but the RCA cable adapter blocks the hdmi port on the back of the xbox so you can't run them both. I've got a $1200 audio interface with two dedicated guitar inputs on my PC and from what i've read the game won't allow me to use them, dongle or not. Basically the DRM is putting me off buying the game, if it made use of the low latency hardware I shelled out for i'd buy it in a second.

    • Can't comment on latency but can confirm this does include the cable as I purchased a copy in store today and saw it on the shelf in another store.

Note the picture of the box in the web site link is thicker than a regular XBox game. This is to accommodate the cable in the box.

The no cable version (referred to as Solus on some sites) is just like a regular XBox game cover.

      • Cool thanks. To get low latency on xbox and high def video it seems you need to buy a component cable (ebay 10 bucks). So it's not out of the question but i'm going to try and get the PC version working with my MOTU hardware first. There's just no way a crappy passive usb converter/cable is going to compare to professional stage-ready hardware.

        • Rocksmith doesn't work with ASIO PC Audio interfaces… which is why I haven't bought it either!

  • +1

I bought an electric guitar after my girlfriend ran off with a rock dude and was waiting ages for Rocksmith to come out on PC, or even Xbox in PAL.

She's dumped him now, so I no longer have any motivation. Sad really…

    • Did you get her back? Or did she run off to be with a rap star?

      • No, she started to hate men after that experience :)

        • You can tell us, did you ruin her for other men?

        • I'm sure I got some of the blame.

        • Rocksmith will make you feel better.

    • Picking up girls with guitar skills only works until they are about 20 years old and realise that guys who spend all their time waiting to "hit it big with their band" don't make the best long term partners… But guitar playing is fun so at least give it a go if you have already bought the guitar! It's the sort of thing that once you really get into it you won't ever stop playing.

      • I'm sure I will give it go sometime now I've learnt Rocksmith is out for PC.

  • Good track list and I recognise about 80% of the songs. Heaps of top old school stuff!

    • The 2013 track list is completely different. I prefer the 2014 tracklist.

  • +1

I couldn't sleep last night… I kept thinking about the Rocksmith guitar pack.
This morning at North Sydney JB HiFi I negotiated the XBOX 360 2013 guitar pack (listed at $239) down to cost price $188 when I purchased the 2014 game and cable for $54. So both for $247 which is less than the RRP of the 2014 guitar pack.
I now have two cables and two song lists.
There was one PS3 and one XBOX 360 guitar pack left at North Sydney.

  • So PC or xbox???

    Can't decide.

PC for customisation, xbox for already been setup in the lounge room on the big screen….

    Any other thoughts?

    • PC I reckon. Steam had a sale where all the DLC was discounted. Not sure if you could get similar discounts on consoles.
Also you could go travelling with your guitar, headphones and load RS on your laptop.

      • so i bought it on PC and now am searching out on xbox. The interface on PC is very much a console port and it is annoying plugging in the tv to play.

Another annoying thing is audio over HDMI is a no no. Have to use other audio out to get rid of sound lag.

Game is great though. I am finding the lessons and mini games better than the songs.

  • +2

The thing that really bugs me about Rocksmith is that I have a $350 audio interface with a guitar input jack and a set of 1000 dollar studio monitors and in order to play I would have to use the rocksmith cable and deal with the latency it brings. I understand they did this to combat piracy but I would have bought it on steam during the last sale if I could use my own gear with it.

Ironically though if I pirate it I can use the "no cable" crack by getting a quarter inch to 3.5mm jack cable but would need to then get another converter to actually plug in my speakers as they are balanced out TRS connectors and to be honest I don't want to play Rocksmith that bad(I have already played guitar for 18 years).
Though in saying that a mate of mine has Rocksmith and loves it. He has played guitar a long time but for yours stagnated with just knowing a few easy chords and power chords and he loved Rocksmith as it gave him a drive to learn more.

    • Tried the PC version, the game won't even run with my motu switched on, too many audio devices to recognise or something, it just crashes on startup. Looking at the support threads seems to only work with default motherboard sound, if that. Mine is disabled in the bios for good reason, it's shit and I paid good money to upgrade to proper hardware. Joke of a PC port basically.

  • +3

You can get the Guitar bundle at Gamesmen for $169.
    Gamesmen - Rocksmith
When I put it in the cart, postage was $17.

My cousin lives in Hurstville, so I got him to pickup one of the bundles for me.

An update to this, I received my shipment on Friday and JB sent the CD only version for XBox (no cable included). After waiting more than a week I was a bit disappointed - anyhow, a short visit to my local JB with the package and receipt, they quickly changed it over.
An hour in, my finger is already numb from the strings! I have a long way to go……

  • FYI, the Xbox version is still out for $59.

    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/support.aspx?post=1&results=1…

Also, the 2013 whole pack version (inc guitar) is only $169.95 right now:

  • FYI, this deal is not expired. I just bought the PS3 2014 ANZ edition at JB Hi Fi Elizabeth street today. They had 5 copies come in and me and a few mates bought three of them. $59 each.
