Since when is compensation a bargain?

    • It's considered FREEBIE. As it comes free.
(Or you can always see it as… buy a monthly ticket and get a daily ticket free)
(Well… it is a compensation ONLY If u take the trains.
To everyone else, its a FREEBIE, which makes it a bargain)

Edit: and it is a FREEBIE because
You are getting something free for something you have ALREADY BOUGHT (ie. no additional purchase).

    • Thanks for posting it as a freebie (if it is actually considered a freebie).

Some people could benefit from this… if it ends up with a +ve score, I think everyon who negged it should take another look - and be considerate of others who read OzBargain.

Just because you personally don't value it as a bargain freebie, doesn't mean others share your values.

Hopefully those who are negative on this one can learn that it is a valued freebie… that's the benefit of sharing.

I hope that you can agree on the benefit of sharing, rather than just taking (and negging ones you personally don't value).

no. this does not belong on ozbargain

    • To put it simply, if Nestle says "Buy 3 chocolate bars and get a free chocolate bar via cask-back" you would consider it a bargain.

So if Yarra Tram says "Buy a monthly metcard and get a Free Metcard from Connex", i would consider it a bargain.

      • +1

I better analogy would be, "buy 3 chocolate bars and if you find a cockroach in any of them, you'll get the 4th free!"

        • True… if you are a Connex customer.
Not true… if you are not.
(ie… the good thing is, the 4th bar of chocolate won't be from the same manufacturer :P)

    • Why not? Unless you can give reasons, what's the value of your 'no, this does not belong' comment?

  • I was not aware of this offer,
    thanks bsmksg

  • thanks for letting us know. i would have no idea otherwise. :)

  • thanks ill be using this

    • just a slight remark, be prepared to wait really long for them to send it to you.
However, to me, it doesn't matter how long it takes as long as they send it (usually 2 to 3 months)
      So be patient.

      • I think it is good to still send in form even if u have to wait because it is free postage and u are making connex give compensation for their mistake so they see financial incentive to fix it in future. Although it is only a daily ticket, but they have to employ someone to process those forms.

I'm thinking I will photocopy a half filled in form so I dont have to waste my time filling it in every month :)

Not sure what you are doing, but the last 3 times I've applied it took 2 weeks each time.

        • For me, Jan's took about a week. But Feb's took about 2 months. I guess it's just luck.
          (btw, what's the negative for?)

          • -1

@amkssg: Because this isn't a bargain/freebie in the spirit of what this website is about. Its compensation for Connex failing to meet a customer service standard. Just because the ticket system doesn't differentiate between train and tram users doesn't change that fact that this is compensation for the fact that the public transport system has failed you in some way. A freebie would be if it was a buy one get one free style deal or if they give you a free ticket even though they met their service standard.

            • @bigheadache: (It's like arguing that deals on OZBargains are not freebies, because it take time to fill in the forms, and electricity to power your computer, therefore paying for your time and electricity would make NOTHING a freebie)

The fact that the you were given the ticket for FREE makes it a freebie. Regardless of circumstance. (which is why you claim compensation in the first place. However, if connex made me pay 50cent admit fee for the ticket, then i wouldn't consider it a freebie because I PAID)

    awesomeee…thanks this is usefulfor meee!=)

  • NO one should ever turn down a freebie!

So even though I live in Sydney +1 to you sir!

It has been a part of contractual requirement for Connex to give compensation if they cannot provide service. This is written in clear letters at every station. So it is not a freebie or bargain. People need to read the customer service charter while they are waiting for their late or cancelled trains. And what good is a compensation ticket for some one who might have run late for a job interview or anything else. People say plan ahead, my question is how many days do you have to plan ahead to get to a place on time via a train? "Even if you have NEVER taken connex trains, you can still claim the FREE ticket", misleading information. "This month, each customer who used a monthly, six-monthly or yearly ticket on our train system in May 2009 is eligible for a free daily ticket for the equivalent zone/s as compensation", actual situation. Read carefully.

    • The terms and conditions also state that it "must be valid on the first weekday of the month".
Hmm… but i have been receiving the Free Metcards even though i do not take the trains.
So if connex is not compensating me, then SOMEHOW the free metcards floated into my mailbox.
(Truth be told, you DO NOT need to take the trains and DO NOT need a metcard valid on the 1st weekday because Connex DOESN"T CARE!!!)

      And i shall repeat:
Connex Users: This is a COMPENSATION for sucky services.
Yarra Tram and Bus Users: This is a bargain/FREEBIE from a company which services u do not use.

As a non-Connex user, your point about "being late due to delayed/cancelled trains" is not relevant.
However, i do acknowledge that it is a contractual requirement, which from a consumer's point of view, is not relevant either.

  • good for people who don't know about it. I just got feb compensation today and it took 3 months to process.
the compensation is not really beneficial to yearly ticket holders though. probably palm off to friends/family.

the yearly discounted ticket through PTUA is excellent value for money in my opinion if anyone missed:
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/12597

    • Yes, that's the downside. It takes really long for them to send out the compensation as i have mentioned above. I basically keep these free tickets for friends and family, not for myself.

And if you have a yearly ticket, just send in a photocopy the ticket every month, and they will compensate you.

(For some reason, i was sent Feb's compensation TWICE, lucky me.)

takes one month to receive the free ticket

  • This is no bargain. You have to have the ticket. Then you may aswell say connex plus is a giant bargain…

    • +2

Err… isn't that obvious??? This is ONLY applicable to those who have a ticket.
What makes it a FREEBIE is that:
You are getting something free for something you have ALREADY BOUGHT (ie. no additional purchase).
Instead of BUYING something to get a bonus gift.

It's a pretty silly comment as it is like reading a Chocolate Bargain and saying "This is not a bargain because i don't eat chocolates".

(Note: Apart from Bargains, OZBargain allows us to post FREEBIES)

  • not a bargain

    • +2

This is listed as a Freebie, not a Bargain.
Sometimes i think people do not read…

  • +2

    This isn't a bargain, it's their usual monthly offer…

    • which you know about, but lots of people don't (see above)

  • by mis-use the compensation terms and conditions and get a free ticket shouldn't be classified as freebie or bargain.
if you actually take connex service, the compensation is what you entitle to
if you never use the bloody crowed connex train, you are getting the "free ticket" by misuse the compensation offer.

    • True. However, given the choice, i would claim anyway.
My point was to make known the fact that it exist, claiming is the individual's choice.
(and i do take the trains occasionally, but nv did punch my metcard since i am on a monthly)

      • should +1 for ozbargainer spirit.

        • I actually respect your view, and the "negative" vote.
          Your point is justified.

What i dislike are those who just say "Not a bargain" and give this a negative vote as this is actually useful to lots of Melburnians who take the trains.

  • You have to have the original ticket - it not a freebie.

  • Thank you very much for the original poster. I had no idea this compensation offer was available. Thanks to you, I can now claim for 3 daily tickets. And yes, I do catch the train.

  • I claim this every month that it comes up then sell the tickets off in lots of 5 for about $30 (a saving of $20 on buying single tickets).

  • a jib

    • what is a jib?

  • This IS a freebie to those who meet certain criteria… Oh no I don't meet that criteria therefore I better vote negative cause it sucks that I have to miss out ….

    Sigh.

  • Fail post… complete waste of time

    • Firstly, Huh?
Secondly, i realised you have never given anyone a positive vote. (trying not to be sarcastic)

  • Can anyone confirm how you work out if this is claimable each month i.e. what figures do they have to acheive and how do you tell if they met them? I've still got my June ticket but don't know if I can claim.
