You can get a much faster rk3188 quad-core stick for around this. Plays xbmc full HD

Link please as interested in such. Thanks

    • Do tell, where? Do you have personal experience of the much faster stick?

      • aliexpress has the UG802 HD for $44.40 delivered to Australia.

    • I bought a 3066 stick for around this price this time last year!
But it seems prices haven't changed nearly as much as I would have expected…
3188's are in the $60+ range, and 3066's are still around $40

They are not hard to find

I have the more expensive model with 2Gb RAM, Ethernet, Remote & external Wifi antenna
Running XBMC, netflix, hulu plus trial, plex and VLC player
Plays everything on my NAS except some of the DTS encoded bluray rips.

It does crash now and then in XBMC but it gets better with every new release and now supports hardware decoding.

    • How often does it crash? And when it does, how long does it take to start up again?

      Thanks

      • Mine maybe once every few hours mainly while browsing my library, maybe due to size of my library and slow network. I have a rk3066 as well I picked up before. my next project is to put linux\XBMC on it.

  • How does one of these compare to Raspberry Pi?

    • +1

Less hackability, but way more CPU power and RAM.

      • I'm only interested in XBMC performance and more RAM and CPU power would help here. Do you know if XBMC runs better on one of these Android sticks? My only real concern would be XBMC development on android. I can google and all but would rather hear from peoples personal experience comparing the 2. Thanks.

As per sonicentropy's comments.. XBMC on Android is still a bit buggy and unstable…
Stability wise, XBMC on Linux is much better.

        • Yep I have opted to sideload it rather than linux/xbmc(way more stable) on my RK3188 because i down want to lose other android apps. it is still usable. It's early days for the Droid builds of XBMC give it a few months and they will iron out the bugs.

I have had a UG802 for a couple of years. Its brill, gets used daily to play downloaded movies of any format and for my missus to play her downloaded free games on the TV. Her latest fav's are Papa Pear Saga and Candy Crush.
My new tech resistant missus now downloads all her new games with it. : )

Have connected a cheap usb hub to it and connected a combined mouse and keyboard receiver and plug the portable hard drive in to play movies. The mouse gets a lot of use but the keyboard, rarely. I don't knows what is special about XBMC and not really interested as MX Player plays everything we download including MKV files, no prob's at all and NEVER crashes.

They are a great thing to have. Do yourself a favour, imo. : )

  • I have a Minix G4 which was supposed to be for Netflix. Worked for a month and then it refused to connect to wifi after using custom DNS addresses. Is this as dodgy? I'm looking for another device that'll be used for Netflix and YouTube. Chromecast doesn't accept custom DNS so not sure if I should jump onto one of these

    • My custom rom is based on the Minux builds, I have had no issues with Getflix DNS.
You do have to sign in every now and again to update IP.

  • Can you install addons such as Plexbmc and additional skins?

How easy is it to navigate XBMC on Android using a remote?

I have my collection on a plex server and both Plex and XBMC struggle on the raspberry pi.

  • RK3288 Is apparently going to be released in Feb with a significant power boost. We might see RK3066 and RK3188 based dongles drop in price. Personally I'll save up a bit and get a 3288 dongle… I want non-jittery 1080p!
