  • Got the same chip in my tronsmart t428… Crashes heaps, don't know if its the chip or I just got a dodgy unit…. Does OK… Chunky on certain files, seems much better with plex transcoding.

  • Rep, will this work with the 240v mains power in Aus?

    • Hi, there will be a AU adapter in the package. thanks

Not a deal. That is their normal price, and on eBay there is currently two RK3188 devices for less than that.

That said, this price is generally inflated. SBCs in general have taken off significantly in the last couple of years, and the prices have done nothing if not drop. If you're looking into something like this, consider getting the Odroid-U3 or something. It has the same specs for the most part (1.7ghz quadcore, 2GB RAM) but it uses a Samsung Exynos processor instead of a Rockchip, has audio out, 100mbit lan, 3 usb ports, GPIO, etc. Can run full versions of desktop GNU/Linux (ie Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, Wheezy). It's also completely open source and open hardware.

The two benefits that this stick has over the the Odroid is OOTB flash memory and wifi, however both of which are negligible (memory cards cost $5, and the Ralink RT5370 wifi USB that sell on eBay for $4 are magnitudes of times better than the wifi these come with).

Not that I advocate the Odroid specifically because there are better products out there (I'm more of an Olimex OLinuXino guy myself) but if I had to pick between the two, I'd definitely go for something other than these sticks.

    • thanks nice board, and would still fit comfortably behind a (mounted) TV, that's why I like my tronsmart , as it sits in the HDMI port and it doesn't require any external power.

the tronsmart crashes too much and was playing files too jerky….(I've just installed plex that transcodes on the fly which may fix the issue)

I noticed it used a standard pin type adaptor, does it have a USB header? would be handy if I could plug it into the TV port…

If I still have problems with the tronsmart I think I might move to one of these.

Have you tried reflashing? The RK3188 is a fairly powerful chip and shouldn't be doing that..

If you want to stick to the RK3188 there is always the Radxa.

But yeah. There is really a lot of these types of boards out there, and almost all (99.9%) run Android and have a decent support group. These cookie cutter sticks were great value when they came out, but in 2014 its just no longer worth it (unless they're at cut throat sub-$30 prices).

  • People use this for xbmc?

  • I stole a Rikomagic IV a while ago for about this price. Just keep that in mind.

      Cool story bro

      • Rikomagic is in my opinion the 'Gold standard' for these sticks. Nice product to use as a comparison benchmark.

  • do these kind of things have a remote controller? I mean an easy to use remote for big screen tv.

    • Yep, mini keyboard/touch pad combo can be had quite cheap if you know where to look, they use bluetooth

      • "if you know where to look"

        Would you care to elaborate?
