I hope no one buys this crap "shanzai" phones. These chinese phones were quite popular in developing countries like south east asias, with the sole purpose of conning people that this is a real S4 or note 3 or whatever, or something similar with lower price. Over time people people get fed up and stay away from all this chinese branded craps like plague. I won't even buys it for $25, my cousin used to import gadgets from this type of factory in china, they can virtually produce a product for any price point you want, basically you get what you pay, well sort of…..they get your money you get junks. They still makes handsome profits from whatever the price they sell you, and you ends up with useless junks. Trust me, I test drive a media player they sent us as a sample for around US$45 FOB supposedly playing full HD1080, android 3.2 upgradeable to 4.0, gives you access to play store, youtube etc, and what we get is lag like hell when you play mkv, only thing its good for is 700mb avi file. As for play store, the apps are like 99% incompatible with the unit, not to mention their complicated menu. Please don't encourage them to promote their craps on ozbargain.

tl;dr: You get what you pay for.

    • Mate, you get junk for junk price. Why complaining? There are plenty decent smart phones manufactured in China under Chinese brand, like Huawei, ZTE, Xiaomi, etc. Even Zopo, THL are not that bad. Of course you won't get them at junk price. So do your research and listen to what others are saying. If you and your cousin want to sell junks in Australia and of course you are looking for importing junks at junk price and they would supply you junks at junk price.

      • Well $250-$350 is not junk price. Secondly I'm commenting on this no-name chinese brands, with questionable parts and quality. I own a lenovo thinkpad, and I'm think they are excellent. And I'm clearly says "shanzai" phone, try google it if you dont know what it is. I have no problem with huawei or other well known brands. I'm speaking out of experience seeing all this craps products, and try to warn unsuspecting fellow ozbargainers, is it wrong to do so? Well isn't this part of being in the community, giving feedbacks, either positive or negative. This is my research and finding, for all to read, perhaps you need to do your research on craps chinese products, try google fake eggs, fake rice, gutter oil. And who says we are importing all this craps for Australian market.

        • Mate, click the promotion link and see what brand the phone is selling. If you never heard about Zopo or THL, well then better google it and do your research on what other Australian people are saying about them. Then if you still think they are junk, good on you to pay double or triple price for Samsung and Apple. And Ozbargain is not the place for you to buy a diamond but you only want to pay price of orange.

Fake eggs, fake rice, gutter oil etc are not my business. We are talking about smart phone here. You'd better find a better place to complain.

And, I guess your research on "Shanzai" is somewhere on the Mars. Let me educate you a bit. "Shanzai" is a word initially invented to name the chinese unbranded and cloned 2G phones before smartphone came to the market by apple in 2007. They are particularly referring to phones made by home/small factories without manufacturing licence issued by the chinese government. They are based on MTK mobile solutions/platform and 10 people factory in Shen Zhen can have a production line. MTK provided the entire RF and baseband solution so what they need to manufacture a "Shanzai" phone were to copy the shape and function of famous brands and put chips, camera, battery etc together. The cost is so low therefore they are so cheap. They are not properly tested and compliance with RF and safty standards. And that's how you call it crap.

The market demond for smartphone then over wiped the "Shanzai" phones after 2007 because technologically it is not easy to "Shanzai" a smartphone, as MTK did not have entire solution at that moment for 3G and smartphone platform. The cost to "Shanzai" a smartphone is not cheap anymore. Hence, those "Shanzai" factories are losing market and shut down very quickly.

So google Zopo and THL brand and see whether they are "Shanzai" factories or high-tech mobile communication companies before making your comment please.

Paying double or triple for apple or samsung? Wow I didn't know that, all I know is I'm paying for their innovation and quality. If what you say it true then chinese brands must have dominate the market around the world. Instead of apple store or samsung store, we all will line up for the latest craps. Even the educated chinese wont use their craps brands, they all use iphone and samsung mate, prove me wrong, walk around in city where you see chinese tourists and see what phones they are holding.
Shanzai is referring to anything cloned, those craps they all so innovative that samsung are copying from them, the phone designs to small thing like the wallpapers??
The same thing also happen to their automotive industry, fail, I often pity people who drive greatwall pickup truck.
Good luck defending all those chinese craps brands, I value your opinion, because this is a free country, and we all entitle to give our opinion and judgement.
If you google enough on samsung or apple you will see two opposite feedbacks, positive and negative, you can't satisfy everyone, but their sales and popularity do all talks. Also google enough on chinese craps brands they still craps regardless. I rest my case, after all this is just an opinion.

          It's OzB..Price ">"label. — Beautiful thing imo.

"Which brand may I get hdsound in my hand"
          (/UMI /Zopo oyah).

          Bang for buck equation.
          'n Steer clear replicas.

        • Well Jackfruit, how much money you pay for a brand new top brand phone with 5 inch dislay, 13MP camera, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, and quad-core processor? How much you pay for iphone 5? How much you pay for Samsung galaxy s4? If you don't know what the market price, go to Dicksmith or JB to find out.

"Shanzai is referring to anything cloned". I am laughing. Then any country produces shoes, umbrella, cloth, etc is "Shanzai" country? Without putting the meaning in proper context, it doesn't make any sense.

What's the population in China? How many people using mobile phones in China? China mobile has 700 million users, that's only one operator, don't even mentioning China Telecom and China Unicom. If everyone in China is using iphone, do you think Australia has any stock left?

Did I say everyone in China using your so-called "Shanzai" brand? Did I say your so-called "Shanzai" brand dominate the world market? Do you understand English?

People lining up or wait overnight for Apple products everywhere in the world, not just in Sydney, Shanghai, and Hongkong. There are another word to call them "fans". I am not the "fans" for Apple or Samsung. If you are, good on you.

Apple sued Samsung for IP infringement, and Samsung sued Apple for the same thing. Who copied who? You will say "oh because it is a smartphone, so only Apple and Samsung can make the phone, others can't!… If you do, you are Shanzai…" I am laughing again.

You only see Tourist from China using iphone in Australia. Have you been to China and seen what phone a person on the street is using?

All I want to say is you get what you pay for. I am not defending Chinese brand. If the promotion is for Indian/Vietnamese product, I will have my right wording too.

I am simply sick with those people like you: looking for diamond but only want to pay price for a orange. And if you can't have diamond, you would blame the junk you got rather than yourself.

You are giving both positive and negative feedbacks? I am laughing again. All I can see is "China is a Shanzai country and making everying faked." That's all you want to say.

Because Australia is a free country, I am not value your opinion, sorry.

  • Interesting.. but it's still an MTK.

    • What's wrong with MTK?

      • Inflated specs that sound good but don't compare clock for clock to better processors. A 2ghz MTK is not the same as a 2ghz Qualcomm or Exynos. Octo core probably doesn't mean much paired with MTK.

It's the processor of choice for cheap china clone phones.

        • Who cares? hugh performanc difference? I cannot tell. You get what you pay for, mate. No one stops you pay double/triple price for a phone with Qualcomm chip.

        • Yeah, just that calling it Octo core makes it sound a lot better than it is, and it's misleading.

  • GB fail my $5 watch test anyways after one faulty unit received from off Black Friday; not good. >OTOH supposing they could be a good for price matching more creditable shops ? I've rarely had much to complain for in my sourcing stuff 'direct.'
Nonetheless I am looking forward to contemplate that next variant to this 'promising' chip set — the 95 with X8 + bands LTE. I know am beginning to loathe tethering local datacard solutions, '3G' by which can be utter crap (assuming I've either IMEI related discrimination or bad signal using 2100 band).

If you REALLY want to buy a china phone, then get one thats not trying to be something its not.

E.g. I bought a THL W200 for my father recently, he is happy with it, absolutely no lag, 720P 5" screen, dual sim, nice build quality and standard battery life (i.e. 1x day with moderate usage). Got it for $170USD in Nov 2013.

There are plenty of good/decent china phones and plenty of reviews by people who have bought them aswell. Just gotta do your research, ensure the band you plan to use is supported and manage your expectations! Do these things and you will be happy with your purchase.

    • I was reading the whirlpool comments and people recommend THL W100, W200, W8, W8+…I am looking for something with LTE so will keep an eye on. The problem is the chinese manufacturers are still mainly targeting their internal market which does not have LTE network ready. There is no demond of having LTE handsets for chinese market.

  • I had a phone that looked exactly like the $248.99 one and it rusted between the LCD and the glass. Managed to trade it for a broken screen iPhone 3GS which I could then sell.
