Guardian Weekly Newspaper 6 Issues $1 (97% off) or 12 Issues $12 (83% off)

500
BBA06orLAA14

For those few strange folk like me who think tablets are as useless as a laptop without a keyboard, and should be confined to the bible and medicine cabinets- here's a deal on a 20th Century marvel:
A newspaper with substance.

Saw the $12 for 12 Issues in the New Yorker, tried the code and it worked with delivery to Aus.
6 for $1 seems to be fine too (haven't tested it myself though).

Fine print in the new yorker ad says offer closes Jan 30 and can cancel anytime without charge.

Although I presume if you dont cancel at the end of the trial you get slugged $72 for the next quarter.

All this computer hacking has made me tired, time for grandpa to go lie down.
Cheers

who think tablets are as useless as a laptop without a keyboard,

You ain't using it right then…

    • +19

Look I'm not saying that they don't have a use for anything or anyone … I just mean they are one of a growing number of examples of products in which the need doesn't dictate the existence, the technology does.
aka- we can make it, so we will sell it.

The leap from analogue tape in audio and video (cassette & VHS to CD & DVD) was immense, as was CRT to flat screen, dumb to smartphones… these were driven by need, with the benefits obvious for EVERYBODY (nerd or not) to see.

Once you start talking laptop to tablet, CD to SACD, DVD to HDDVD/BluRay and HD to 4K/3D TV, you are likely to find a lot more conjecture and subjective opinion (and rightly so, it's not real innovation).

Bottom line is I think people buy things like a tablet and then find a use for it (at which point they have a vested financial interest in it's usefullness).

I've seen my mum do the same thing with things like veggie slicers etc she's bought off infomercials… she goes on about how useful and better it is than using a knife- but everyone knows she's a goose.
      :)

        good deal!

to your point of "want" before "need",your examples of the "need" technologies suggest benefits in increased capacity, which leads to better quality and quantity of the same thing (VHS vs DVD). In addition, though not stated, physical form factor has become lighter and more durable, which is a great benefit in itself.

this brings me to your argument of people buying tablets based on "want" before "need". the move from laptop does not bring extra capacity (CPU speed, RAM, storage, video card). It does however improve on accessibility (touch screen and touch-optimised interface, simple design as well), battery life (exception to the above), durability (less moving parts, non hinges), better displays (on average) and more importantly, establishes a common mobile platform for apps designed for on the go usage (which gets better with time, but is only getting better because the platform is there in the first place).

What does this mean? I think its case of there is plenty of usefulness in a tablet, but for the beginner, these specific uses are not so obvious. However, there is an understanding the tablet will be useful hence there is confidence in investing hundreds of dollars in buying a tablet. Blame the overwhelming choice in tablets and even more choice in apps available for this large unknown.

I think the distinction lies in whether there are any drawbacks that go along with the benefits.

The benefits of a tablet over a laptop come with compromises- eg:portability over power.

I can't think of any drawbacks or compromises going from VHS to DVD (unless you're sick in the head and enjoy tracking and head cleaning?)
Same goes for all the other genuine innovations I mentioned.

There is a point in any product lifecycle where the marketing people are forced to earn their money way more than they previously needed to.
Tablets, Phablets etc reek of this in my books.

        • +1

perhaps a different perspective is required as the drawbacks are not equal - focus on the innovation/new functionality that tablets (and the platform) bring as opposed to viewing the tablet as a substitute product for a laptop (which it isnt - classic example is word processing on a laptop is way better than on a tablet).

understandably a tablet is traditionally a PC in a different form factor, but considering the OS platforms that these tablets bring (leading to the creation of innovative apps) coupled with fluid human interface, I think its fair to say that tablets integrate a lot better into daily life where they can be useful in many, small ways as opposed to highly focused single-purpose activities (which would be the domain of a laptop).

        • I'm going to bend the rules and list consumable solids, liquids and gases under food :)

      • If we are driven by needs and not wants we'd never have goodies like lingerie nor cookies and cream ice creams, you take some and give some, the useless will weed itself out in time.

You've given me an idea - the bacon bra. Now to create my Kickstarter page…

        • we still have junk food
          cookies and ice cream
manufacturers want to sell you things you do not need so they can get rich
          cigarettes
          we want to kill ourselves

      • well nuanced
        except for the goose
people just have their pet habits
        they cant change

      • True enough. I gave my tablet to my mother in law and I dont particularly miss it (the tablet, not the mother in law).

I wonder what this means for the future of capitalism. The beast has already sold us all the crap we could ever want or need.

It is a great paper, a nice change from the Murdoch press.

Great deal, OP, thanks. Have bought two, one for myself and for another beloved life time friend in Ireland. I hope it won't break the friendship when he discovers that I will have to cancel it by the time he has received the 6th issue and is just really get into the newspaper. Still definitely worth the price to take the risk.

Yep great deal. When you get confirmation of your order there are the subscription email address for each region, so note the one for your area down, and set a calendar appointment for 6 weeks time.

Also FYI, it does say if you choose to unsubscribe, they will refund unmarked issues, so worst case if you get charged the $75ish for the next qtr, just email then and get a refund of all minus the one or two already mailed. Close to no risk.?.

Remember you can read this and other newspapers online at this website:

    http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/world/a/20627156/singapore-…

Just enter any number of about 10 letters in length for library number (I used 004004004).

Fantastic newspaper, subscribed due to a deal here a couple of years ago, I think, and have consistently renewed at full price because it's basically the only source of actual news left in Australia.

My understanding is the weekly print version is international (ie only 1 type), but happy to be be corrected if that is not the case?

  • 004004004 doesn't seem to work on the pressdisplay site sadly

    • Works for me in both windows explorer and chrome. Try some other random numbers?

  • Ok once I get onto the pressdisplay site, which boxes to 'sign' into? I'm in chrome so not sure what I'm doing wrong?

    • Where it says SIGN IN Barcode/library card No. Ideally you would enter your library card number but most numbers between 6-9 characters work for me.

  • Great paper BUT delivery in Australia is terrible. Even though it is printed locally and is in Newsagents on Thursday I often didn't receive it until Monday. Friday at best and sometimes even Tuesday. This is to a Newcastle address and it's posted from Sydney I believe. Relying on Australia Post to deliver a newspaper is not very good business imho. I really miss the days it was printed on rice paper and sent from the UK - I actually got it on time back then!

Needless to say after putting up with this for 2 years and many complains I gave up my subscription and stated buying the paper at a newsagent instead, if they still had a copy left.

For $1 though it's worth seeing how delivery is to your place.

    • Been arriving every thurfor me like clockwork for 2 years in melbourne. New astle may be a bit outback forregulardelivery!

does anyone have a yearly Guardian Weekly deal? I got one from ozbargain about 2 years ago, but the full price sub was ridiculous. same with Time; routinely 90% off in the USA and barely half here, for a very thin weekly mag

  • How about a tablet that has a keyboard? (AKA Surface) ;)

I actually looked at surface/transformer laptops about 6 months ago but came to the conclusion that what you have then is an underpowered laptop you poke.

      pass.

But until then, I don't see much appeal.

Sealed in plastic, quite impossible to get wet.
    Tabloid size, think material.
Had a peep this morning before work, weems thin at first but after flipping thru, it has many pages.
Will be my reading companion over the weekend.
    Thanx Damoo.

    • got mine too, handy read and the price is right.

beats the hell out of the brain liquifying Mx on the train

  • If one does not want to receive any more papers after the trial period, do we have to cancel or can it just lapse?

When I logged into my subscription it said "last date to renew is…"

    • you'll have to cancel, otherwise they will charge you the $70ish for a quarterly subscription.
Although I believe they will refund the difference if you cancel during that first quarter.

      • Thanks but I just checked online, and it said it has "lapsed". No further deliveries are being made.
