You don't need an internet connection, however you can freely copy files to and from them via an ethernet connection. You can also copy files to and from them with a USB drive. You can use them as a media player, with or without a USB drive. They have an inbuilt Season Pass feature and they can run TAPs, so you can add a great deal of functionality (such as recordings being adjusted to be minute-accurate). http://oztoppy.wikidot.com/taps
They are really easy to use, though yes, the remotes are less than fantastic for those with poor eyesight and/or big fingers.
always get a Panasonic recorder , they are the most reliable and do what they say they will do….. rarely requires a firmware update …..don't cheap out like most people want to and then complain of issues
Topfield UI and remotes are poor to say the least. I learnt this the hard way, however there arent many great options out there atm. Personally I would love a tivo box but you can't buy them anywhere any more and there are loads of 'wanted' ads on Gumtree for second hand units. Supposedly icetv are releasing their own unit which might be worth the wait. They are an Australian company who provide a guide service for humax and some topified units, and from what I've read are quite good.
Also if you buy Topfield make sure it can utilise Taps or it will be a definite waste of money.
I bought a recondition magictv for under $200 a couple of years ago has been great also comes with a 1tb hdd.
