I've got the Z-5500 and love them, I assume these are on par if not better.
Great system for the PC or even for the TV.

Solid speakers but no HDMI audio restricts their functionality.

    • Don't most TVs have an optical audio out that will work perfectly fine?

Most TVs don't pass-through DTS through HDMI, so the HDMI input is going to be useless anyway. You'll still have to connect via optical or coax. I've yet to see an HDMI TV or Bluray player that doesn't also have coax or optical outputs. Even set-top boxes have them.

If you have an HDMI passthrough home theatre system then you could use these, but if you have that, you don't need these anyway, as they do the same job!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't think of any reason why you'd need to have HDMI on these speakers.

      • Im using a HDMI TV without optical :(

Does it have a coaxial output? How would you connect this via HDMI anyway? TVs don't have HDMI outputs.

        • …I use a media centre pc, mwhahaha and use it's inbuilt optical :)

      • I've posted this before but anyway:
Optical & Coaxial audio are surprisingly limited. They can't carry uncompressed surround sound, it has to be compressed as (lossy) Dolby Digital or DTS. If your source device isn't DD or DTS (i.e. many surround sound computer games) you won't get digital surround sound. Some high-end computer motherboards have 'DTS connect' and can do a conversion but most can't.

Furthermore, the new Blu-ray lossless audio codecs (Dolby TruHD etc) carry much higher resolution audio signals 'HD Audio' and cannot pass over coaxial or optical digital cables. The data rate of optical/coax is too low to fit these codecs. But then again, the Z906 can't decode these formats anyway. Instead the Z906 relies on the 'legacy' DD/DTS files included on most(?all?) Blu-ray.

HDMI can carry all this, as well as uncompressed (LPCM) 8-channel audio. And it supports things like audio return channel which enables the TV to send audio in the opposite direction back to the speakers (i.e. for Digital TV/DVB-T). You don't have to stuff around with codecs or high-end motherboards.

        • Does anyone know how I could connect this to a W1070 projector? The inputs are quite limited: http://img1.lesnumeriques.com/produits/48/15515/5114da4bdbc9…

Fair points. Though of course it begs the question, if you are this serious about your audio - why would you even be considering a $325 set of PC speakers?

if you are this serious about your audio - why would you even be considering a $325 set of PC speakers?

Because these are surround sound speakers with a huge amount of punch for the dollar. The deep rumble and auditory orientation really add to FPS games and action films.

But if you're not aware of the input limitations, you might not get surround sound. You don't have to be 'serious about audio' to realise that a digital surround sound system that doesn't necessarily give digital surround sound is a waste of money. HDMI capability would have avoided this and could have provided higher audio quality.

        • The Z906 has 6-channel direct audio channel input, so each input can be connected individually, providing uncompressed surround sound.

        • Yup most have those. They are analogue inputs using three 3.5mm stereo jacks and bypass the onboard DAC. The outputs are very common on PC motherboards and for most gamers these stereo jacks will be the only way to achieve surround sound. These are not common on newer Blu-ray players as they tend to use HDMI and/or optical/coax instead.

I tend to avoid direct analogue audio inputs as I experienced interference last I tried but YMMV. Also it can be a bit of a cable mess.

  • love these speakers to bits but wish they had HDMI

  • Yes, use optical audio…

Also, the reviews on these are a mixed bag. Some people prefer the Z-5500.

There are some clearly confused posters in here. You don't need HDMI output and rarely do for sound. Unless you are passing the TV through a Home Theatre system, which in this case would make little sense.

The TV is usually the last point of connection and usually the accepter of the HDMI, not sender. As you would be sending sound only to this system, you won't need HDMI output.

  • I bought these a few months ago for $330 at JB-HIFI. They were advertising $380 but seems they had a bit to of space to move.
Great speakers, they complete my PC set up.

I have a set of z5500 I pulled out of storage and connected to my TV via optical out for day-to-day TV use.
I plug it directly to my PS3 or WDTV Live via optical when watching Blueray discs/rips for DD/DTS. All works well with a Harmony remote.

Very punchy and I do prefer them over the z906. My brother has a set. I am however going over to a 2.1 so let me know if anyone is after a set of the z5500. Everything is in very good condition. Full working order. Rears peakes have stands. I'm in Sydney and will advertise soon it soon. PM me if you're looking for a z5500.

  • Weren't these about $240ish a couple of months ago at DSE and JB?
They usually come back down to that price every 4 months or so.
I'm sorry, but price history works against this. Not a bargain.

    • Yes 3 months or so back JB had them for $238 a steal but had very limited stock if any.

  • Won't the cheap Pioneer or Yamaha entry level 5.1 systems in the $350 range be better than these?

    • I was close to going for those two systems you taking about to be honest the speakers and sub are not that great. The z906 is a fine package for the price, they cop a great deal criticism because of their high RRP but if they first brought it out at $299 wouldnt be so many saying its a bad package.

No complaints from me so far got all my gear connected without need for amp so far eg WDTV, ATV, PS3.
Would like to see more optical inputs though.
