Nice. I was going to post Zazz's deal (P4 2.8 + 15" LCD + XP for $279.95), but that would not be as good a deal as this one…

    • Thanks Scotty!

  • much better posting of deals tao326 (especially after the last computer deal u posted - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/12374)

    gw

    • Thanks 22001862. I said I've learnt ;)

  • My folks have a similar era Dell but with a Pentium D, it's dead silent! would make an excellent low-end HTPC.
However..I'm not sold that this is a bargain.. $349 for a used PC is getting up there, and it's 2 generations old now.
I reckon Scotty's (Zazz) deal at $280 is actually better.. that's a $70 price difference! (4/5ths the price).

You are joking aren't you? This is the deal you refer to I assume:
      http://www.zazz.com.au/

The Zazz IBM ThinkCentre has a slower processor P4 2.8GHz (compared to P4 3GHz), 512MB RAM (compared to 1GB), CD-ROM (compared to DVD-RW), older chipset, 15" monitor (compared to 19").

It is DEFINITELY worth an extra $70 for the Dell OptiPlex GX620, if not just for the larger monitor.

Also, the Dell OptiPlex GX620 is upgradeable to 4GB RAM, while the Zazz IBM ThinkCentre can only hold max. 2GB RAM. The RAM for the Dell OptiPlex GX620 will also be much cheaper since it is DDR2 SDRAM not the older, slower DDR SDRAM in the IBM ThinkCentre.

Also, the Dell monitor has DVI input (IBM has VGA only) and USB ports on the side of monitor.

Fair enough.. I didn't do the research on the other system.. And yeah, I know I shouldn't open my mouth if I haven't done the research.
Still think the price is high for such an old system.. I'd recommend checking out the trading post before buying this.

  • Is the HDD upgradeable?

Is there any way for me to upgrade this so there's another VGA or DVI port? I'd like to run dual screens on this computer if possible.

    Thanks :)

I'm a newb with Dell comps. No idea how much space etc there is inside. The last time I openened one up I think I could take the ribbon cable out of the HDD but couldnt take the actual HDD out.

    Thanks again!

    • Have a look at http://articles.directorym.net/Dell_OptiPlex_GX620_Review-a8… .

There is an image on that page of the internals. It looks like it would be easy to replace the SATA HDD with a larger one.

Not sure if it has a PCI Express slot for video card, you would have to ask the seller. It does have at least one spare PCI slot.

  • Whether or not it's better than that other deal, one should still keep in mind these systems would be around 4 years old now. The best part is actually the 1905FP monitor which has an S-IPS/S-PVA panel, but its backlight may no longer be performing well. And the hard disk may also be on its last legs.

    • I have a 1905FP at home and a 1905FP at work — both around 4 year old, and both look great :) Fantastic monitor from that era.

Agree about the HDD though. I'll be very weary of HDDs that are out of warranty.

  • Hardly a bargain. If you live in Victoria, you can pick one up from BudgetPC :: http://suntrom.com.au/component/virtuemart/details/6157/72/u… for $369.00

  • Yeah, pretty much a standard price.

The monitor is slightly larger than normal which is the only thing that might make it bargain-ish.

Hrm, if you have the know how to build your own budget system you could get this

    CPU: E5200 $100
    Mobo: ASUS P5KPL-CM $70
    RAM: 2Gb 800Mhz generic $30
    HDD: 160GB Seagate/WD SATA $60
    DVD: Pioneer DVDRW 216BK $30
Basic Coolermaster Case & PSU $75
    Generic KB & Mouse $30
    Sub Total: $395

    Monitor: 19" Asus $165
    Total: $560

So for just under $200 extra, this will last you for years if all you need a computer for is some surfing, emailing, music and videos. Seems like a reasonable premium to pay for a better system and brand new parts!

    • True, but I don't think the kind of person that buys these type of second-hand computers would necessarily know how to build a computer.

Some retail outlets like Umart and MSY would probably build it for you for around $50 which would be more than worth it for most people, taking into account how long it would take to build, test and install the OS themselves.

Also, your pricing doesn't include an OS. You are not supposed to transfer an OEM Windows licence to another computer.

      • Yeah, I was thinking just whack on Windows 7 RC for the time being ;)

Or for a similar price to my build, you could probably pick up a Netbook that would serve the same needs. I recall there being a few Netbook bargains floating around recently.

    • Not a bad setup for everything onboard. Although I agree that the system above is a much better option. It would be more easy to upgrade and you would have more than 3 months warranty on the parts. The Dell might be difficult to source additional/replacement parts in the future. (i.e. the RAM, motherboard, etc and the 200W PSU might not be powerful enough to run additional components). Anyway just something to consider …

    • Got a canceled order. There are few available now.

  • just ordered one for my grandparents, will be perfect once i add a bigger HDD.
now sold out, think i got the last one.

    Cheers guys

BTW, nice site, very easy to order.

  • Wow even if you don't want this for personal use, cannibalising it for some decent spare parts for older PC's is a good option for this very low price.

  • Thanks to all the ozbargainers!

The desktops have been sold out very quickly! We are definitely getting some new models in the next couple of weeks.
