  • Thank you very much poster - have just ordered enough to last me all through summer!

    • New to home brew but how do you keep the temps under control during summer?

      • +1

I brew under my house which stays a fairly constant temp which is perfect. If it is too cool I have a light globe set up.

        • +3

          Underground moonshiner.

Just need some bathtubs, a bowling alley that has a conveyer belt to the local pub, and Rex Banner on your tail so you can upgrade to the 'beer baron'.

KABLAMO! Must of been that bean I ate!

        • Is that the secret to your great tasting, alcohol free beer?

      • I bought a thermostat off Ebay - about $15, that switches an old fridge on and off to keep the temperature constant at the target.

        Edit: here's a link: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-220V-Digital-Temperature-Cont…

        • I've done the same thing (using http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Digital-STC-1000-All-Purpose-Temp…) with an old wine fridge and also a tuckerbox chest freezer. Converting a freezer is a better idea because they have better insulation and also a tuckerbox style freezer is the perfect size.

The fridge is connected on the cool circuit and I use a heat pad on the output of the heat circuit. This means I can make a lager in summer and an ale in winter. Happy days.

      • Wrap the keg in wets towel (Keep them wet - either by resoaking twice a day, or get a bath sheet, leave one end in a bucket of cold water & wrap the rest around the keg, so it soaks it up. otherwise, put the keg in a bath/tub with water & ice.

  • Good timing as my local Woolies have just stopped carrying homebrew stuff. :(

    • Same, my local Coles stopped a while ago, now local Woolies too. IGA is the only local store left now.

  • Damn I was hoping to get some rubber seals for grolsch bottles but doesn't look like they stock 'em!

    • They're cheap on eBay.

Shame that the old original 474ml bottles aren't cheap 2nd-hand. Anyone got any old bottles they wanted to get rid of?

      • Yeah I had a look on eBay for the seals and the shipping kills it. The homebrew joint up the road from my house was out of stock so gotta wait for them to get them in.
Im a huge fan of the grolsch bottles. I got about 100 of the 473ml ones and they are great for re-use with home brewing. I just make sure when bringing beer to someones house, to re-collect all my bottles for the next batch :)

I don't use Grolsch bottles and I still take me empties home when I go to a party. :)

Is the kit worth buying? Was looking into getting into brewing but I wanted to buy a cheap kit to see if I'd enjoy brewing beer before spending the big bucks. Was going to buy the Mr beer kit but the batches seemed too small for my liking.

    • Definitely :)

EDIT: Although there are other kits that are just as good. I've got a BrewCellar.

    • The kit is very good, if you start out with nothing it is good value too.

You can get it for $79 at Dan Murphy's. Check online whether your local has stock.

  • Cheers ordered the IPA pack to get back into brewing

  • Would have been even better if Coopers had some cider packs.

    • +2

Cider is very easy to make without a pack. Just get some preservative-free apple juice when it comes on special, some yeast (I use EC-1118) and depending on the juice you might need some yeast nutrient (not needed with the cloudy Australian Fresh).

Most packs contain artificial sweeteners which can taste funny and might or might not be healthy.

When I ferment from juice I let the yeast eat all the sugar, resulting in a very dry cider. Before drinking just put a few drops of sugar syrup in the glass before pouring the cider on top.

If you're after Morgans Export cans for $15.95
    try these guys http://www.homemakeit.com.au/collections/home-brew

They've got free shipping at the moment if you use "XMAS" discount code.

    My fav recipe.
    - Morgans Export - Royal Oak
    - Coopers Amber malt
    - 1500g Corn Syrup(Maltodextrin)
    into a 23lt keg
    - add rehydrated Morgans kit yeast
(sugar + luke warm water + yeast into a glass (half filled) & cover with plastic wrap for 1hr - it'll foam up)

On day 3, dry hop 25g of Amarillo hops
On day 8, remove the hops
    On day 9-10 bottle

wait 8 weeks - similar to James Squire Golden Ale.

If you prefer it a bit more bitterness, sub the Coopers Amber malt for a tin of cheap lager (Toohey/Homebrand)

  • Can buy some of these cheaper at my local Coles.

    • You don't mean Woolies? I believe Coles discontinued their homebrew line about 3 years ago.
But yes the basic line isn't that cheap. but the Thomas Coopers stuff is.

  • Anyone figured out how to get the "Order of Coopers" discount to apply with the current website redesign?

    • its automatic when logged in.. at least it was a week or so ago when i ordered something based on this deal
(and I had only just signed up before ordering)
