Can you stream plex on to Chromecast yet?
Not yet via an official app, but very soon apparently:
So would that just work by streaming the media to the phone then sending it back to the Chromecast, or would it be direct?
Thanks, I missed that :)
That chromecast deal is from Fishpond, hence it's only a deal if they deliver. In my experience with the company they've only held onto my money for a few months and told me they can't source the item they sold me.
I still prefer streaming over SAMBA via windows file sharing. It saves on cpu cycle from Plex and also gives you full access to all your files. That's just me though.
That only works for a small collection. Plex has so many advantages such as sorting by recently added, viewing cover art, giving a plot summary without having to jump on the web as well as all your other standard stuff like rating, duration etc.
I watch my stuff and just leave it in my ALDI NAS running Samba :P
All sorted correctly using FileBot
It's mainly about the on-the-fly transcoding. If you keep all your media in a single format that is accessible you don't need Plex. If you're lazy like the rest of us and just download random formats and can't be bothered to figure out codecs, etc then Plex is for you.
Brilliant app when combined with an iPad! Streams with barely any noticeable compression
Is there any particular advantage to this program for home network use over just es file browser + mx player other than shiny interface? I don't feel particularly comfortable allowing something to catalogue the meta data for media that I may have, how to put it, "questionable" ownership of.
You can search, sort, filter by anything, it remembers where you got up to in a show and you can resume. Yes you get all the fan art, it plays the theme song. Auto-adds your movies, shows as you download them. It can trans-code on the fly so that if you wireless network can't handle hi-def it will reduce the quality so it plays fine. It very simple to setup on your pc and then stream to your portable device or in my case I have 2 android media players an IPAD and Nexus.
Doctor Cool, you would have no issues whatsoever letting this catalog what you have.
The main screens has a "Recently Added" area so it defaults to whats been added so you can watch those particular shows as soon as they dl.
It also supports multiple servers so you could have 2 pc's running the server version and can search across both.
Thank you very much for the response, I'd been looking for a similar program to orb (now long since dead) for home network media streaming but it was just that use of meta data that had me concerned. At 2 bucks I think I'll have to give it a shot.
Is this better than running XMBC for Android?
I must be getting old.
I don't know what this is or what it does.
A deal description and 14 comments and I'm still none the wiser.
Its a media streaming app which hooks into the Plex DLNA server. I think the appeal is the mobile transcoding and UI which scrapes metadata.
thanks for the rundown megaphat.
Once they bring out a version that scrapes metadata and bird poo off my car roof, I'll be all over it.
cheers
This plus Chromecast deal = one very happy camper!
