  • Pretty good price for an Atom based tablet. 2Gb memory could be enough for basic tasks, but keep in mind that the 8' display is very hard to use for non-Windows8 apps (the ones that are not fully touch optimized).

    Spec's: http://www.acer.com.au/ac/en/AU/content/model-datasheet/NT.L…

    A review (http://reviews.cnet.com/tablets/acer-iconia-w3-810/4505-3126…):

Despite its quirky tablet-to-keyboard size disparity, I liked the Iconia W3 more than I expected to. As a standalone tablet, it's compact and portable enough for casual on-the-go reading and video viewing, and with the large keyboard, typing is better than on many small hybrids.
But the lack of any kind of touch pad or track point may be a deal breaker for some (it was for me), and the grim screen quality sucks a lot of the potential fun out of this tiny, reasonably priced system. This is one of those cases where a handful of flaws drag down what would otherwise be a great budget pick.

Keep in mind Windows 8 bloat wastes a HEAP of space on tablets.

    • +3

it has a microSD card slot so storage isnt as much of an issue

      screen is the killer

Also worth a mention that Acer have launched the W4-810, which apparently improves a number of aspects (e.g. screen) compared to the W3…

That said price still seems good if you are after W3 :)

Shameless plug for DSE gift cards - $300 worth for $270 ? I'm not sure if I'm allowed to put this in here, but if it's against the rules, please remove mods :)

    • Buy 'gift cards' from the other side of Australia for ~10% discount that may never come…I'd take my ING 5% and OW 5% price match any day.

    • why the neg?? Rohan clearly indicated that he wasnt sure if he is allowed to put it here plus this is not much of a difference compare with staff discount card??

      • I think the negs are to show him that it's not ok to advertise personal items in posts, thats what the classifieds are for. I didn't neg him, but that would be my guess :)

        • I think a simple "This isn't allowed here" would have sufficed :) Not that I mind the negs, shall remember next time.

and it's under the $300 ATO threshold, so an instant tax write off.

  • So does it come with the keyboard as pictured?

    Nice cpu benchmark score. :)

Not that it matters any, I suppose this is one of the cheapest entry points to have win 8 on a tab.

  • Can anyone please comment on the quality of the JVC telly?

  • 50" LED TV for $697 seems like a damn good price. Anything to be aware of? is it 120Hz? Someone please convince me not to buy this… Are there likely to be better deals on this size or bigger TVs before christmas?? The JVC Brand is giving me pause for thought.. i don't want a crappy image… Anyone offer any advice??

    • try and go into a store today and see the picture in person. Ring around to find a store that has a demo model.

      • good call I'll do that.

        • let us know what you think :)

        • Contrast Ratio: 4000:1 (Dynamic) from Dicksmith site - i would pay a few $$'s more for a better model and brand.

Had a look in 2 stores, they didn't have the 50" model on display but they had the same model 42 and 32" so I checked out the 42". It was ok. The picture quality didn't stand out, but it didn't put me off either. I liked the bezel, it has a nice brushed gunmetal black/grey colour which looks nice. Viewing angles were decent, couldn't visually find fault with it. But it didn't really 'pop' if you know what I mean.

I looked at the other models and the LGs consistently stood out as being brighter and clearer. Followed by the samsung and then panasonic. I'd recommend the LGs, they also had much better viewing angles as well.

Also they have a 50" Hitachi LED/LCD TV for $697 available now, but wasn't on display so couldn't check it out. I think I'll wait for a good deal on an LG unless we get something bigger for a really good price.

        • thanks for the comparison. had a look on the website and this seem to be a good deal too, not sure if that's the one you saw. although stock may be hard to find

  • $398 at OW http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Tab…

This is W8 and not W8 RT right? In the new market for a tablet. Something basic for web browsing.

    • yes, full Win8, and you can upgrade it to 8.1
full win8 tablets have Core or Atom CPUs, WinRT usually have Tegra i think.

  • it has micro-HDMI port for video-out right?
it could be good for use as a basic desktop pc with a monitor - quiet and energy saving. slim units are quite expensive too

  • 1280 X 800 res only so no metro apps/desktop snapping (screen too small anyway).

Also, eMMC/SSD only 32GB? Win OS alone takes up ~12GB. Not to mention hidden recovery partition which I'd imagine is highly compressed image, but nevertheless another ~5GB+. So not much space left to install large apps on there. eg. Adobe CS6

Anyway good price though if you don't want to fork out upto $500 for a bay trail tab.

checked out the tablet in store, the screen quality is really bad, it will sure hurt your eyes if you use it more than 30mins

  • +2

The screen is regarded as one of the worst on tablets. It honestly should be on fire sale at $99 at this point.

    • Maybe the screen would look better if it was on fire…

  • If that Motorola phone had been at this price available 3 months ago, I would've bought it!

just wondering is it still worth to buy it now?

The W3 already superceeded by w4 by leaps and bounds. The W3 has been out for a long time internationally, only in this part of the world it just got released like all failed electronics, makers release it here like it was something new. Not only the screen is the worse ever for any tablet the atom chip is older dual core. The new 8" win8.1 tablets are out now with quad core atoms and faster ram and nicer screens see Toshiba Encore Lenovo Miix 2 and Dell Venue 8 Pro these are the new gen 8" win 8.1 tablets and unlike iPad mini with no significant improvement apart from screens these new gen quad core atom powered 8" tablets are very very fast and nicer much nicer.
Why buy an old piece of technology like W3? So many tablets have screens better than the w3 in my opinion the w3 should be worth only $79 and for kids only. Acer knew they did a boo boo on this model and that's why quietly and quickly introduced w4 less than a year after w3 was introduced. Most reputable blogs say don't buy it has no redeeming qualities. At least the blackberry playbook is better and cheaper if not for lack of apps.
