  • could I do a crossfire with a XFX 7970 black edition?
    cheers

The good thing about ati cards is you can crossfire them with any other ati card. But honestly i think one is more then enough.

Yup you can…. If you've thoroughly researched crossfire issues and frame pacing restrictions. P.s. Not amd bashing, I've got a 7990 and I like it but crossfire ain't perfect

  • Is this one better than msi 7970 twinfroz that was on sale?

    • I would say performance would be on par.

The MSI R7970 TF 3GD5/OC BE comes with a higher base core clock (1050Mhz vs 955Mhz), but you could probably get the Powercolor to up to par provided its ASIC was good enough.

They're as near as makes no difference really; both Powercolor and MSI are budget vendors based in Taiwan, though Powercolor outsources most production to Foxconn whereas MSI own their own plants; hence I give a slight edge to MSI when it comes to the guaranteeing better QA.

This Powercolor has two DVI outputs which some users may prefer if they're driving two monitors.

Both cards have their fair share of complaints when it comes to longevity and reliability:

As for the oft-cited reports of coil whine/capacitor whine/excessive noise with various 7970's; they're an architecture specific problem really (that plagues the 7990's too) that owners of Gigabyte and ASUS models report as well; AMD just pushed the Tahiti chip to beyond its limit in the pursuit of securing the E-Peen crown over NVidia's GTX 680 and as a result those cards sound like they're barely holding together. That being said, they are the best bang-for-your-buck GPUs to date.

      • Wow, great reply! Thank u very much, amar. In that case, I will just open my MSI card and start using it now.

  • hey, is the stock availability supposed to be on pre-order? or did I miss the sale?

    • Stock availability at the moment says: "Yes - Processing Time 24 hrs" … and the price is still $299.
If you're interested go for it!

Just went to pick this up during lunch time. Still selling for $299 :)

It says online only but the nice guy at the counter let me buy it at the store

  • I got one of these and noticed they are now gone. Very happy and express delivery got me the card the following day even though I live in the sticks.
