Gigabyte | AMD R9 290 4GB $479 (Free Delivery for NSW - Sydney Metro)

430

Saw this while browsing the expired deal posted by martyla

http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=r9+290&spos…
Next cheapest price (factoring in Deliv) is $485 by Umart (Sapphire R9 290), not including delivery of $7
Other $479 R9 290 is by PowerColor, available from PCCG, not including delivery of $13
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

Either way, it's the cheapest R9 290 delivered for now, of any AIB partners (Gigabyte, Sapphire, MSI, ASUS)
No clue when the special price ends as either ITestate has 999+ Gigabyte R9 290s, or their inventory doesn't reflect true stock levels.

wtf arent these meant to be better than gtx 780s
    why so cheep

    i feel gipped that i have a 780 now

    • how much did you pay for it?

    • +2

The 290 is lower in the lineup than the 290X. I think these are on par with, if not slightly better than, the 780's - but not by a massive margin.
But yeah, ridiculously good value. They do get a lot hotter than the 780's though, so you have that going for you ;-)

    • +3

don't worry about it - the 780s give much more consistent results, run quieter and cooler than any of the new 280/290 cards that have stock cooling.

      • +1

        Yet they cost $200 more.

    • +19

THEY ARE FASTER then 780… BUT! do not waste your time and money buying one of these

WAIT for the custom cooler versions to come out.. the current AMD Fan/Heatsink is horrible and all review sites state that the noise is so loud they cant recommend buying the card.

      • +1

        Wish I could +ve more!

these crappy stock coolers has been around for more than 10 years now,

they are like my sworn enemies for life

    • People are a bit too loyal to nvidia for no reason imo.

      • +1

Except for the number of reasons mentioned just above your comment…

        • Nvidia FX5800 GPU had a vacuum cleaner attached to it.. After that Nvidia dumped the Hover! heatsink combo

AMD Started to us it lol Thank goodness for aftermarket solutions that the partners use.

    Nice

I'll wait for better coolers though, the single blower style fans tend to be a bit loud

    • It's over 60db on Uber - that's some Delta fan stuff right there (For those who didn't know about those, just know that they were LOUD AS HELL!).

The aftermarket cards will be amazing though - really want to see the DirectCU version of the card!

      • +1

Which aftermarket cooler solution is the best?
At the moment I've only seen (I'm new to comp building!):
-DirectCUII by Asus, 2 fans with heatsink/fins
-TwinfrozrIII by MSI, 2 fans with heatsink/fins
-Windforce by Gigabyte, 3 fans - seems a lot of hate because "it looks s#it", and apparent coil whine [Though the MSI has coil whine reported in the $299 HD7970 MSY post]

        • +1

All custom coolers are good… It now depends on your case cooling and preference!

Anyways I wouldn't buy teh 290/x with stock cooling. MSY has advised that non-reference cards will be available in December!

        • +2

To clarify, the coil whine isn't caused by the fans / cooler. It's the choice of components on the card, especially if they're defective / not damped properly AFAIK

Nearly every brand has it's own coolers (XFX Double Dissipation, EVGA have like 5) etc and you can always replace it with a Artic Accelero if desperate

Cwong I have an Asus DirectCU II GTX670 and LOVE IT

Very, very happy with DirectCU II

        • There will also be a HIS version that will be quite good. Ive always had good experiences with HIS non reference cards.

        • still rocking with windforce giga 6850

one of the most stable and quiet GPU coolers i ever used :O

    • I'll wait for the price to go down further :)

      Cheers.

I like IT Estate, but they tend not to hold stock.

When it says availability "YES" that means their wholesaler is still showing stock.

I have had an experience where even when stock availability was "YES" they refused to honour the price too…

Having said all of the above, these do look like good deals…

      Exactly right:
This is why I posted: No clue when the special price ends as either ITestate has 999+ Gigabyte R9 290s, or their inventory doesn't reflect true stock levels.

The reason why I put 999+ is there is a little trick with some online shopping websites that you can check the quantity available, that is if they update their stock levels live (as in, it goes down by the amount that has been placed on order)
      Say for example:
      At OnlineStoreExample.com
      1) Add product to cart
      2) Go to Cart, change quantity to 999999 (whatever is the maximum you can shove in the box)
      3) Press Update Quantities
      4) If they have a live inventory updating system, then it should say something along the lines of "Cannot fulfill your order! Insufficient quantities!" and usually your ridiculous quantity of 999999 will be adjusted to the actual quantity remaining on hand for that online store. If it doesn't and it's just stuck at 999999, then I guess you're going to have to trial-and-error, I like to do the halving method (Guess an appropriate number, keep halving it and see if the cart will accept it)

Of course this method doesn't work if there is a maximum quantity (limit per customer) specified to a particular product.

  • Thanks guys very interesting any specific 4k reviews out as I'll be getting a new monitor soon Would the and in crossfire be the way to go?

    • IMO 4k is still an infant compared to 1080p gaming, which is now beginning to be mainstream with next gen consoles

i would say the next gen after R9 will run 4k comfortably in single gpu set ups and 1080p would be like rendering 640x480 for entry level cards

    • Unless you are getting this: http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-PQ321Q-31-5-Inch-4K-Monitor/dp/B0…

I don't really see the point concerning yourself with 4k right now. By the time 4k monitors become widely available this card will probably be a few generations old.

Top result for 4k is two 290X's in Uber mode. With custom cooling and factory overclock you should see similar results with two 290's.

You might want to check that your 4k monitor has a high enough refresh rate to need two 290's (the Seiki's are 30Hz at 4k).

  • Do you guys reckon it will drive 1440p well enough for battlefield 4? (Waiting for custom coolers for sure)

    • Definitely yes. 1600p on Uber settings is playable, so 1440p will be playable as well.

    • It can probably even handle 4k quite well.

      So yes.

    • According to Tom's Hardware, the reference hardware averages between 40 and 50 FPS on the full Ultra preset. Considering you probably won't be needing AA at that res, and custom coolers will allow for better performance, you should see some higher results.

    • Cool thanks. I hope custom coolers improve the situation quite a bit because I cannot handle hot and noisy any more… ;-)

      • You can always turn to watercooling! :D

        • Yeah well with my next build I am going to try and make my rig more simple, did not have much luck with a crossfired positive pressure build that I currently have, I am going to maybe just go mATX, single GPU. Don't know if water cooling is the right approach for what I am thinking (also consider I have 2 kids one of whom is a newborn and a fully busy life so not too much time to tinker!)

  • Make sure you are not confusing this card with the 290x.

The 290 does have a uber switch on the card but it will not change any of the fan settings like it does on the 290x.

The original specs for this card where for the fan to run at a 47% which was ensure the card was never going to go over the 93 Celsius.

This card is almost identical now to the 290x with the drivers out but the major change is they increased the stock fan speed to 50% which does make it louder.

Great price a card for this capacity though, I've got 2 on the way for my new build
