good price. there's also $100 instant savings on most of the panasonic camera's. GX7 for $898 is tempting, but don;t think its wort 3 x G5's.

  • how to avoid international charging fee as ing charged me, dont wanna apply for credit card that is not debit though (otherwise i would have used 28degree)?plz help!

  • How is warranty handled by this mob?

    • unfortunately I think you have to "safrice" the warranty for the price, just like buying an electronic item cheaper from overseas…(unless with international warranty)

"All items sold by B&H are warranted solely by the manufacturer/distributor, except "direct import" a/k/a IMP items. All items needing repair (other than IMP) should be sent to the manufacturer/distributor directly for service. B&H is not liable if the manufacturer/distributor fails to perform warranty service."

That is an excellent price and the post is good as well.
I have a G2 and it is great but a G5 would do better in low light.
That review makes some good comparisons with the Olympus EM5 which was top dog in m4/3 a little while back.
I often buy from B&H and they are the best! Very ethical and very competitive.
The prices of these cameras follow a definite cycle and $US299 is usually the lowest they go before being discontinued.
I have a query about the postage where there is the comment about no lithium batteries through international post and is that not UPS?
I will look for some comparison reviews vs the EM5 as maybe I should upgrade as I have the better zoom from the G2 era as well as the wide F1.7 which is not getting much use since I went the Fujinon route.

    • I have a query about the postage where there is the comment about no lithium batteries through international post and is that not UPS?

Due to U.S. Postal regulations, we cannot ship items containing lithium batteries to international addresses via Postal Service.

Pretty sure it doesn't apply to UPS since I've never had a problem with anything being sent here (that their manufacturers allow, that is).

It's a confusing message though. You can contact them to make sure but I've never had a problem getting anything sent here containing a lithium battery in the box.

As an exercise, if you try adding just binoculars to your cart, check the postage options. You should have more. Priority Mail International and Priority Mail Express International postage is offered (these are offerings from the United States Postal Service) and the lithium battery message doesn't show up. Now if you add something with a battery, only UPS and Fedex are offered (Priority Mail doesn't show up) and now we get that lithium message above. So I think it's just an informational message they can probably re-word better, since the cart automatically omits the United States postal options (Priority Mail).

  • So add another $50 for a battery. I've now done some research regarding Panasonic "international warranty" and it's a dog's breakfast. Don't expect any support from "Panasonic" unless you get a stamped international warranty certificate which appears not to be the case here unfortunately.

  • ? So there's no battery even though it's supposed to be in the box ?

Also - I'd prefer to get a longer lens and I do a reasonable amount of video. Any recommendations ?

    • You could probably ask them to remove the battery from the box, or pay $140 for Fedex freight to Australia. Coupled with a $45 Square Trade warranty that takes the price to ~$A500 landed.

    • ? So there's no battery even though it's supposed to be in the box ?

Are you talking about the lithium battery message when looking at your cart?

I'm pretty sure the message applies to United States Postal Service only (not UPS or Fedex). See my message above. You could always email them and ask them to clarify.

It seems they added this message recently 'cause I never saw it in the past. Confusing stuff. Probably the bulk of their overseas sales comes from devices with a lithium battery inside the box (cameras, camcorders, spare batteries…), so I can't see them not sending that stuff out now.

B&H should consider re-wording that or simply not having the message there at all, if that's the case (United States Postal Service options get automatically omitted when you add a device with a battery anyway).

      • Thanks fpor clarifying, sort of. Thought they were using UPS for 'US Postal Service' but I see it's a freight company.

        • Thanks fpor clarifying, sort of.

Yeah, it doesn't help when United States Postal Service is shortened to USPS.

  • Missed out there. I put a couple in my cart and later returned and they were "Discontinued".
I spent my time mulling over if it would be an improvement over my G2 and thought it would be a little better but not by much. Panasonic have not added a lot, not even focus peaking, or in-body stabilization. I like the rubbery body but they feel a bit toy like especially with the shutter sound they make. Raw photos were not a lot different and still a little lacking compared with what Fujifilm's expensive X series cameras can produce with a jpeg. Although not much different from Olympus EM5 cameras, which cost heaps more.
Ripper price though and definitely as low as they will ever go.

I though lithium iron batteries were fairly safe compared with lithium polymer so postage would probably not have been a problem.

      !!
      Thanks for pointing that out.

On their website they listed the bargain would be valid to 11th Nov. It's only the 10th there now (early morning), so that shouldn't have happened so early. Big smacks for B&H. Maybe they'll change it back soon (they've done similar things in the past).

I own the G2 too. The 16MP sensors are better than the dated 12MP sensors in low-light / higher ISO. They are not the cutting-edge in 2013 but are a significant step up from the 12MP if you shoot at the extremes. Aside from that, the biggest changes with the newer cameras are things like Pinpoint autofocus, electronic shutter option, far better viewfinder and LCD resolutions, faster autofocus, full HD video (though no mic input or extensive manual video control in the G5, and the G7 misses out on the mic input too).

Anyway, with some luck, maybe B&H will put the price back. I have seen the 'discontinued' stuff before, and then it magically disappears and the product is in stock again. Regardless, B&H shouldn't have done that since they said it was going to be valid 'til the 11th (their date).

Unless they really sold out this time….
(but I think they have more stock)

  • I was a bit relieved that they were gone as I buy too many cameras and find only incremental improvements in the newer models. The G2 was good. I resurrected it at a bbq yeterday and it took good raws that resonded well to post processing with pleasant tones and nice detail. The specs on the viewfinder seem the same as does the touch screen. I could not convince others too buy some more cameras and concluded I should do the same. Compacts and 4/3 may be less popular now. Try a Fujifilm. They are a bit overpriced but high quality and often wth a bug or two although Fuji try a bit harder to please than Panasonic. Focus peaking can be just a firmware upgrade if the manufacturers are less manipulative. Focus peaking helps you use those old lenses with cheap adapters.
Thanks for the notification of the bargain and keep us posted if they reappear so we can consider it all again.

    • The specs on the viewfinder seem the same as does the touch screen.

Check the specs again. Significant resolution improvements in both areas in the G5 (compared to G2). Plus things like being able to control focus point with LCD open while looking through the viewfinder, faster continuous shooting, a lever to control motorised zooms, etc.

      Try a Fujifilm.

I like the EVF and the ergonomics on offer in the Panasonic range. Fujifilm doesn't even come close to competing with this price too. It all depends what you are looking for, but for me Fujifilm doesn't offer what I'm looking for, nor at a budget for me to be tempted to pick one up, though I'm looking at them again now, out of interest, based on your recommendation.

I could not convince others too buy some more cameras and concluded I should do the same.

I know the feeling. I can safely state I have too many cameras. But it's my main hobby. G2 has excellent controls and remember it has a mic input. I still prefer some things in the G2 but in other areas they have moved ahead, albeit incrementally. Whether or not it's worth it is up to the user to decide. But there are some nice upgrades.

Focus peaking can be just a firmware upgrade if the manufacturers are less manipulative.

Yes. Remedied only in more recent models.

Thanks for the notification of the bargain and keep us posted if they reappear so we can consider it all again.

      I will :)
