Does the Asus drive burn cd's as well?

    • You're really asking if a DVD burner can burn CDs?

      • YUP! And glad I did as MSY, Asus and Internet say that it can't.

This must be the first DVD burner that I have ever heard of that cannot burn CD…

        • I was shocked too but have a look at the Asus website. No mention of it whatsoever. Hoping someone who picks one up can test.

          https://www.asus.com/Storage/SLIM_EXTDVDRW_Drive/#specificat…

        • I was actually being a bit sarcastic there. Anyway to find out a bit more info on this burner myself, I checked with Nero Burning ROM and it says this burner can burn CD-R at max 24x and CD-RW at max 10x.

        • Cheers,

I may have to get one for $19 and just see for myself.

    • Bought & tested one myself.
Firstly, it has the 'Compact Disc ReWritable' logo on the from bezel.
Works fine burning CDs with my old Nero 9.

      • Thanks,

Just picked one up myself and read blanks and burned them too. Perfect as my Blu Ray Rom/DVD Burner has been very iffy lately.

I wonder if this use the standard size notebook optical drives. Would be cool to upgrade the enclosure to a blu ray burner at some point.

  • Does anyone know if the slim drive can be taken out of the enclosure and put into an itx tower?

    • Why not save yourself the trouble and just buy one that's designed for the job?

      same prices

      • Your comparison is a slim drive against a 5.25 drive.

Bascially i need to use the external drive until the time that i need to fit it into a slim itx case.
Some itx cases take a slim odd only.

They use a standard SATA connector same as SSD/HDDs so you could just remove the case & secure it to a bracket in your itx case & plug it in. Done.

Btw, I might pick one up too. External units provide more flexibility in use.

    Please don't buy a 27" 1920x1080 monitor!

    • why not? :/

      • 27" 1080p = 82 DPI
        27" 1440p = 109 DPI

25% less pixel density vs 1440p

        • but much cheaper, you can't run games in 1440p without spending $700 on a card

  • rep I hope you can post some deals on the Samsung 3d monitors or other makes.

    • is this model bad?
      i just made an order
the reviews online from american seemed ok :(

      • +1

depends on what you'll be using it for…

General purpose, word processing, watching movies (non-hd one) should be just fine…

  • Hi Rep!

Any idea what's happened to the Gold Coast store? Last time I went there it was empty and the website shows "udner construction"?

    Thanks! :)

  • Just picked up one of the ASUS slim external DVD drive. Funny the salesman told me at the counter it won't work with Apple computer. I plug it into the latest Macbook Pro and it can read my DVD movie disk and DVD-recordable disk fine. I think may be he meant the included CD with bloatware is only for Windows, not available for Mac. Oh well, not planning to install those free bloatware anyway.

    • Can you test if it can read and write cd's?

      • You can definitely using this dvdrw with Macs, if you look at the side of the box, it have MAC compatible icon there.

However the Apple External Super Drive can't be used on the ordinary PC, your windows will "See" The super Drive but will not allow you to insert or read the disk. But if you using bootcamp windows on your apple computers (macbook, mac min, etc) it can read and write dvds without any issue.

        • Hmm not sure where you were looking qdduo, I just checked the box and I cannot see any Mac compatible icon. Anyway it does work on my Macbook Pro.

  • Only noobs buy 27" 1080p monitors

    • Well, these are good for the OLD people. Doesn't make sense for old People buying a Dell 27" Monitor but using lower resolution like 1920 x 1080 and paying heaps exta $$$ right?

    • why? can get for $249, 1440p requires expensive card to play games, you'd be looking at $500-$600

      • 1440p does require more grunt but it doesnt make this the better option. A 23/24" 1080p would be better over this monitor. The 27" is larger but it doesn't justify its lower pixel density and higher price.
