cheap does not necessarily make it a bargain…

    • Huh? Why is that? I'm about to get one :S

      • Bigw website review

Despite the bike being of quality build, its brakes are absolutely terrible.
One of the brake arms, will not release back to its original position, after being applied, subsequently causing excessive wear on the brake pads,
This has happened ever since, the bike came out of the box, despite numerous daily adjustments.
There is clearly a problem with the springs in the brakes, as this is the most likely cause.

  • Twin brakes for better stopping? Bonus.

My shed also has a sturdy steel frame, but I'm not about to ride it either.

Be sure to install the forks backwards if you do buy one of these. It seems to be mandatory for all DIY-assembly department store bikes.

    • Saw a photo of that in a bike thread somewhere.

    Unsafe at any speed

    • Even when stationary it's a tripping hazard.

They both wear red…coincidence? Methinks not.

    • $6.66?

    • LOL

    • You edited the word "Santa" and put a terrible tags.

      • I did nothing with the tags. no idea how they got there.

    • +1

      Santa, Satan.
They're all the same to me.

  • so good deal or bad deal? D:

    • It's a good deal as $60 will usually just get you a pair of decent mountain bike pedals. You're getting "more" than that here.
Please note, these mountain bikes are not for offroad use. There will be a sticker on the frame telling you that.

      • You're getting more than that here

        No you're not.

You're getting much less than a pair of decent mountain bike pedals.

You're getting less than a decent anything.

If you have $60 to spend on a bike, look in Gumtree. Any bike at that price point is going to be pretty nasty, but a second hand bike is going to be orders of magnitude less nasty than this.

  • if you ride it say 1km a day to the shop and back then fine, but if you ride it 10km then buy a real bike. i'm guessing for most people here who need to ask, then it is fine.

  • Does it come in a box or do I ride it out of the store?

  • I'm in the market to buy bikes for the missus and I for romantic bike path rides along the Brisbane river.

As far as I can tell my choices are:
    BigW bike at $58.
    99bikes cheap bike at $300-400.

Is there some kind of middle ground that I'm missing? Like a $100-250 bike?

    • +3

There is no 'middle ground' because there is no such thing as a bike worth riding below $250. No, I'm not being a bike snob, I'm being realistic. The bike you purchase at $58 will be the same as the bike that costs $100, or $150. Crappy components, limited life and difficult/impossible to service. It will become unreliable and unsafe quickly, and you will not want to ride it.

Spend the $300 and get yourself the very basics of a bike, and you will be happier.

Note: if you don't like your wife, then disregard this message.

    • or get a good condition second hand bike. ebay, gumtree, trading post (does that still exist?)

  • This is something you really don't want to save money on! You will hate it and it will be sitting in a shed forever..

    • …it and it will be sitting in a shed forever..

      While you're in rehab recuperating.

      Brakes - brakes are everything.
My butt is worth more than $58.
      Not much more, but more.

  • Anyone know if that Aldi foldable bike was decent? Obviously different to this but as far as reliability, safety, etc? I bought one and still in the box unopened, should I get it serviced first, in case something moved in transit?
