just remember you are not sitting any closer than 3 X the diagonal size of the screen.

so in this case, you should be 17.5 feet away from the screen i.e. 3x70in (210in).

    • yea…. im not sure i totally agree….

while in a perfect world…… maybe being almost 6m away is completely correct… but i think your misjudging the resolution more than the actual size… even my old 50" 720p was fine at ~3m, my 55" 1080P @3m is also fine…. so is my 30" 2560x1600 @ less than 1m…

its all to do with what you are going to use it for, and what resolution it runs at…. rather than just size v distance…. which is totally irrelevant..

Bigger the better i recon. I want play gta v at the cinema if i could

        • I got a 60inch version a few weeks back. We sit about 3m away. I reckon we could do 2m and would be fine too. PS Real 3D glasses from the cinema work with the 60inch so I reckon they would work with the 70 too. Saves some money on the brand names ones.

yep, thats the difference between active and passive 3d. passive is circular polarised so all the passive glasses will work… unlike some of the active ones which will only work with there brand. i wouldnt get an active 3d tv these days.

The accepted rule is 1.5x the diagonal. I have a Sharp 70" and it is fine at 3m or even 2m @ 1080 or good quality SD. It does have 4 hardware pixels per pixel though. The only issue is poor quality compressed material. You do get used to it and won't want to go back to a smaller screen.

      That's utter rubbish.

Just sit where it feels comfortable.

For anyone interested that may be closer to JB hifi it's only $148.40 extra there. They should easily be able to handle a 5% discount to bring it in line with Costco's price and possibly even provide free local delivery.

That is a lot of TV for less than $3k

  • No doubt this is a bargain but after Cinavia never buying sony again….

With a HTPC and AnyDVD you don't have to worry about it.

After having 4 Sony TVs break on me in the past I'm not buying Sony again..

      • I have one Sony for last 9.5 years… I am really hoping this 42inch plasma would break but it's keep on going.. doesn't even have HDMI connection.

      • After having 4 Sony TVs break on me in the past I'm not buying Sony again..

since even the 90's sony has only been a "fanboi" brand. they have always overhyped there crud that everyone else was doing even back then anyway.

i guess they are the 90's version of apple these days….

When was the last time you bought a Sony TV? My nx720 is pretty awesome, hardly what I'd call 'overhyped crud' that only a 'fanboi' would buy.

    • But the TV doesn't do that …… does it??

  • aw man…that's BS…I paid $400 more at JB a month ago :(
nice Tv wonder why the price is dropping so fasT?

Ultra HD is coming down pretty quick and it really is ideal for these larger 55+ screens. Unless I had an immediate need I would not be buy HD resolution large screens now.

Mind you I'm also not upgrading my Power Mac till they come with inbuilt Blu-Ray.

        /me facepalms…..

        really?

its nothing to do at all with size or resolution…… its simply to do with distance v resolution..

but i guess its hard for an apple fanboi to grasp such things as this….

Thats a bit harsh .. I was actually poking fun at the fact Apple will never put Blu ray in a Apple machine ( as they would rather sell the media online ) referencing a 10 year old device - which was literally the last Mac machine I bought - that isn't fanboisum, I think your projecting here.

Clearly higher resolution on a large screen enables more clarity - maybe not for broadcast TV or DVD upscaling, but definately the TV interface, 3D, and PC / media PC will gain. Peoples rooms are not scaling up with the larger TV's they buy and its obvious to most people that a larger screen will benift more from a higher pixel desity then a small screen. For example last week I put together a display for a convention with Google Earth spanning across 6x60" displays in portrait and it was not as crisp as you would like (especially fonts and cursors etc) @ the approximate 2m viewing distance.

But I will of course bow down to your wisdom and absolute correctness in all things.

I was thinking about buying a 4k set, but for now for various reasons I've decided against it. I'll be buying a 55 inch 1080p set later this month and upgrade to 4k in 2-3 years when there''s more content that I'll actually watch and it isn't priced at such a premium.

    • Hey at least your enjoying yours. There always going to drop. I near bought at your price too

    • I picked up the Sharp 70" for $2300 about 2 months ago…. it's all in your negotiation skills to get the best price, and your timing with store wide discounts.

      • I do like the sharp but want 3D and want passive 3D

  • Is anyone able to upload a screen shot of there current TV prices??? That would help SO MUCH!
