Wusthof Knife Block Sets - $AU150.70 Delivered from Macys.com

345

I was looking to purchase a set of good quality kitchen knives, and came across these 2 products from macys.com.

[Wusthof Cutlery, Silverpoint 10 Piece Block Set - AUD $ 135.60] (http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/wusthof-cutlery-silverpoi…)

[Wusthof Cutlery, Gourmet 7 Piece Starter Set - AUD $ 135.60] (http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/wusthof-cutlery-gourmet-7…)

Shipping for each item is AUD $15.10 by DHL Express, bringing the total including shipping for either product to AUS $150.70.

For comparison, a similar set (perhaps lower grade) of Wusthof knives from an Australian retailer would set you back AT LEAST $399 online.
[Kitchenware Direct - Wusthof Essential Classic 6pc Block Set - AUD $ 399.00] (http://www.kitchenwaredirect.com.au/Brands/Wusthof-Classic-K…
)

Or, a lot more if you were paying full price at a local bricks & mortar store…
[David Jones - Wusthof Trident 6-Piece Classic Knife Block - AUD $ 779.00] (http://shop.davidjones.com.au/djs/en/davidjones/kitchenware/…)

These kitchen knives are German made, and are some of the best kitchen knives that you can buy.

The current sale at Macy's ends on 06/10/13.

    Hi guys,
Has anyone bought stuff from Macys before? Their price seems too good to be true for me or am I just get use to being ripped off by Aus retailers ;/

It's a huge department store in the US.. of course it's fine.

    • I bought a set of saucepans for a really cheap price from Macy's, shipped and arrived in about 5 days. You may also be able to get 15% off by signing up to their email newsletter.

    • looks legitimate, check out wikipedia, it's a division of Machy's Inc., publicly trade on NYSE.

    • Thanks everyone for your information :)

I have these knives and paid $700 for 10 piece block 12 years ago. Extremely pleased with them.

    • Wusthoff make a few different ranges of knives. If you paid $700, you probably got the higher end forged ones (like the DJ's link above). The ones on sale at macys look to be the lower end stamped sheet steel ones.

Just don't expect these to be quality of the Classic series:

    From Wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W%C3%BCsthof

Classic - forged with traditional triple riveted polypropylene handle and full-length tang

Gourmet - lower end line, similar to Classic in looks but without bolster and stamped rather than forged blades
Silverpoint - budget knives, laser cut blades and moulded handles

    • Thanks ehsad,

I have a "6" piece (4 knives block & steel) of the Classic series, bought retail in au 10 years ago.

good to know the gourmet series is not the same quality.

Very useful to know, thank you ehsad.

I have purchased many things from both macy's and david jones. It would seem that while we are getting ripped off, Australian department stores stock the better quality/high end ranges from brands.

The 10-piece is definitely of a lower quality than any of the others. The US 7-piece is not really comparable to the kitchenwaredirect 6-piece, US chefs knife is a shorter, and has different knives. Also is of a lower grade steel.
Still a reasonable price even if its just for the chefs knife (although its a little on the short side, I have a 23cm chefs knife, the US one is ~15cm - far too short to use comfortably)

IMO save your money and get a good quality chefs knife (20-25cm), and a good utility knife (~10-15cm). They will serve you far better than either of the US block sets.

Good advice. Much better off having two good knives rather than many lousy knives. You can buy wood blocks for $10.

Learning to sharpen your knives is also essential. You need a stone, a steel, and some patience. A blunt knife is useless, no matter how much you spent on it.

i got myself a kanatsune petty knife and tojiro santoku… love them to bits

Agree with all these negs. Very misleading advertising. I have the Classics and they are far better than the plastic and other Wusthofs. I think the classic is the only real good one these guys make now. Those Japanese ones I don't know the names of seem to be king these days.

  • Check out the Shun knife's if you would like a Samurai blade!

Good prices but on-line reviews make it sound like the Gourmet knives are much lower quality then the classic:

  • I am not sure if it will work, but I think you might also be able to get a further 3% cash back from Ebates. http://www.ebates.com/coupons/macys.com/index.htm

    • Also if you have not joined Ebates previously, you can get a $10 voucher for Macy's on your next purchase.

The comparison in pricing is ENTIRELY INVALID. In fact, Macy's lists a 7 piece Wusthof Classic set on special for AUD 406.70 down from AUD 772.80 which is entirely comparable pricing.

Note that the Classic knives use a different (better) alloy, and are forged, whereas the Silverpoint and Gourmet knives are stamped, which is not nearly as good. Make no mistake, the $399 Kitchenware Direct knives that the OP is comparing them to are significantly better and worth a lot more.

not perhaps lower grade but rather definitely higher grade

victorinox are generally considered to be the best budget knives

Wish I'd listened to this advice a few months back - spent ages comparing knives and eventually bought a set of Henckels 5 Star.

Also bought a few Victorinox paring knives for quick jobs and I prefer them vastly to the Henckels in terms of smooth cutting edge. Unless you're a serious chef, go with the Victorinox. They don't look cool but they really handle well. Just my 2c…

A quick Google found that the Gourmet 7 piece set can be had from
    http://www.crateandbarrel.com/w%C3%BCsthof-gourmet-7-piece-k…
for $175.10 del, so not an amazing bargain by any means.

Sorry to be blunt, but while the deal looked great, in reality isn't too sharp.

  • I've been looking at buying a good set of knives which includes steak knives for a LONG time now and have now narrowed it down to 2 sets, both from Cutlery and More. They seem to have the greatest range and the cheapest range. The problem is, I*'m seriously struggling with the decision which one to go with cause there are things i like about both of them:

    http://www.cutleryandmore.com/henckels-twin-four-star-ii/kni…

    http://www.cutleryandmore.com/wusthof-classic-ikon/premier-k…

    • the classic ikon handle looks the best

  • See here for more info on the Silver point range http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/61515

  • Don't get these, buy Classic series.

  • Also, this:
    http://www.lifenfork.com.au/index.php?option=com_k2&view=ite…

Used it once so far, takes about 2 weeks but pretty handy!

  • Gourmet(this series) are stamped knives, they weigh about half the weight of the series below, perform much less well but are good knives for people on a tight budget. Emerilware is even worse, their basically crap and hardly sold anymore but should be avoided like the plague.

Classic, Grandprix and Culinar are their big selling premium lines, all same blades, only handles are different. They are all awesome by most people's standards. Also equally good if not better is Ikon/Cordon Bleu, comes down to taste/preference.

As others have suggested above - getting a good chef's knife (9" ideal) + paring knife is most important. You can even compromise on other knives.

But saying all that, this is decent value for money I reckon.

  • noticed they are stamped not forged. any downside of that?
