  • Is a folding tyre easier to put on the wheel compared to a wirebead?

    • For Gators they are both horrible at getting on. My 32 wire beads are tough and the other half's 23 folding are just as bad.

They aren't horrific and I've yet to break any plastic levers but every time I can't believe how strong plastic can be.

The upside is you don't have to take them on and off very often as they almost never get punctures!

      • I can't remember the brand of my puncture resistant tyres and I love them for how durable they are. But oh boy aren't they hard to get on them rim! I'm not totally hopeless in DIY and such, but I actually prefer just to take the bike to the local shop for anything that needs to be done, because the tyres are so horrible.

The main benefits of folding bead tyres are that they fold (so it's easier to store and carry them), and also that kevlar is lighter than steel wire (which is what the bead is made of on non-folding tyres).

Personally, I find wire bead tyres easier to get on and off, because (being a tightarse) that's what I'm more familiar with. For mine, kevlar bead tyres are floppy and don't hold their shape properly when I'm trying to loop them over the rim.

Biggest factor is the tyre and rim combination. Some rims are slightly bigger than others, some tyres have slightly smaller beads than others. If you get a big rim and small bead, you'll break tyre levers trying to get it on. If you get a small rim and big bead, you might have trouble getting the tyre to stay on the rim when you inflate it.

Certain tyres and certain rims are notorious for being hard to fit. It's not a wire/kevlar thing. I can't tell you more than that.

  • gatorskins are great but really hard to get on the rim

  • My brother has been using these….. http://tannus.com.au/
Can't get more puncture resistant than a solid tyre!

I haven't had a chance to test ride them yet, but they sound interesting.

    • Surely there is a reason pneumatic tires have been standard for a century or so?

    • I keep seeing this tyre come off the rim on a road bike around a corner, will wait till tested on others

      • Just thinking about that. That really scares me.

Also, what the hell! Those tyres are 380g each!

I have had gatorskins on my commuter for years, not 1 puncture riding on the rubbish roads of Sydney, really like them. (I bet I get a puncture riding home today)

    • so a pairs of it last for years? im more concerns about the rubber on my tyres [ racks appear on it after 6months of usage ] than the puncture.

    I got the Folding variant.

    700 x 28.

It was actually not that hard to be honest to put on, I expected Folding variants to be easier to put on but added a minute to the process.

Only had for 1 month but very good so far.

Great price. I've had gatorskins on my commuter for the past 6 months, no punctures during this time.
