Megabuy and Microservers… why oh why does that set off an alarm in my head…

    • +2

I'm in the market for a G8 microserver now but my last purchase from megabuy was quite poorly handled, so I'm just going to wait for shoppingexpress to drop their prices first.

    • +2

i think it's in my nightmares when i imagine a wall of HP microservers about to fall on top of me

  • These will be available for pickup in store too :) later tonight.

FYI too - we doing the New Nexus for 299 + Del today -

    • What's your return policy for the Nexus 7s? People have been having lots of trouble with the screen.

      Pickup for $299?

I'm not here to tell you where to spend your money. If you've bought from these people before and are happy then go for it. If you've never dealt with megabuy before then have a quick read

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1691430&p…

…and some experiences from fellow OzBargainers

    www.ozbargain.com.au/node/103901

    www.ozbargain.com.au/node/101567

In the interest of full disclosure, yes I've been stung by these guys, don't like them and will never buy from them again no matter what price they advertise. But…I wouldn't be posting here if there weren't so many similar experiences out there.

    • +8

you are going to neg every single deal posted by them? i can see how much you hate them. if i was on the same boat as you, i might do the same. fortunately, my experience with them (only once) was nothing special. i paid and they delivered.

      • I got a Macbook Air delivered from them on Monday. Would have preferred them to advise me that there was a couple of days delay instead of me having to contact them, but I got it cheaper than anywhere else so am happy overall.

        • I hate Telstra with a passion. Millions of people would agree with me.
But that doesnt stop me shopping with them when they have a good deal.

So whilst I dont doubt youve had a bad experience with them, of course there will be "so many similar experiences out there"… they are a big online vendor.

Ive dealt with Megabuy quite a few times and never had an issue.
Like with every online retailer, there's bound to be horror stories that you can search for on Whirlpool and the like.

You gotta remember that people that search out online forums to give 'feedback' on vendors have mainly had negative experiences. All the positive ones have nothing to complain about so rarely go online searching for likeminded folks.

End point = Megabuy is ok for those of you who have never dealt with them. There will always be negative experiences with every big online vendor.

        • +1

Fair call. In addition to the fact that people are generally more inclined to give negative feedback on forums, there a lot of people out there jumping up and down with unrealistic expectations of vendors and trying to give these vendors a bad name just because they didn't get their way. I don't pay them much attention and don't believe I'm one of them.

My issue here is with megabuy's business practice where they claim to have items in stock, take orders, accept payment and then…well…do nothing until customers chase them up.

          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/84740?page=1#comment-111679…

In this case I believe megabuy were trying to take advantage of OzBargainers by promoting a deal here for a discontinued product and taking more orders than they could supply and then suggest buying a more expensive product. Some people would call that bait and switch but I'm not knowledgeable enough on the subject to say.

Unfortunately I don't have the resources (or inclination) to get my information from anywhere but online forums and the conclusion that I've come to is that it's not an isolated incident. If enough people report dodgy sellers to the appropriate government bodies then the very least that we can expect is that the dodgy selling practices will come to an end and no one will need to waste any more time writing or reading about it. I'd be happy with that.

        • Hi Roscoe,

in regards to the Belkin Powerline deal you posted there, we shipped out over 1000 pieces in 24 hours - check out the video we made for the first day we shipped them.. pretty convincing evidence :)

we definitely had more than enough to supply any kind of expected demand. we did our best and we also gave a deal that has yet to be repeated by anyone since as far as i know.

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEPcBgXStgI

          best wishes..

          Sam

        • If you hired a plumber to fix a problem at home and they did a poor job and had a bit of attitude on the phone when you called up later to clarify things, would you hire them again or recommend them to anyone?

        • Hi Sam, good on you for replying rather than just negging my comment but I believe you're trying to distract people from the point.

we definitely had more than enough to supply any kind of expected demand.

I call shenanigans!!! Stating that there was enough stock to supply any kind of demand is not true.

The numbers are relative in that case and a thousand may sound impressive…unless orders were accepted for more than available, money taken and nothing done to return said money for weeks until questions are asked by customers. To then push a more expensive product because the one posted on OzBargain is EOL (and the reason the discount and popularity on OzB) is where the level of dodginess steps up.

I find it difficult to believe there was an honest mistake made when there are so many similar cases being reported out there.

I'm not saying that no orders are ever shipped out. Reading the experience of OzBargain members got me looking further and found that it's not uncommon for megabuy to advertise products as in stock when they aren't and take people's money. If anyone thinks it's worth the risk then mega buy away but I won't support that kind of business and think it's fair to warn others what they could be in for.

  • Gah, just bought the N54L from shoppingexpress for $298 + delivery- this is only $70 more. Should have waited if this is the going price for G8.

    • the N54L has more HDD bays and pretty sure it consumes less power…Im in the market for a N54L rather than a G8 - but too annoyed at how cheap they went in the past to dish out more $$$$..

(so dont be too disapointed with your n54L purchase they are pretty cool devices)

      • -3

the N54L has more HDD bays

        Nope, both are 4.

pretty sure it consumes less power

Highly unlikely. Both seem to have the same supply, and it will mostly depend on the drives you use.

That said, they are almost the same product, $70 doesn't get you much more than added shiny.

        • The N54L has a 5.25" ODD which can be converted into a 2.5" and 3.5" hotswap drive with an IcyDock.

Seems like people commonly use a SSD for the OS drive to leave the 4 available drives as pure storage.

This website compares the CPU- I'm actually happier with the original purchase now- http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/470/AMD_Turion_II_Neo_N54L_…

        • +1

The N54L can hold six 3.5" HDDs …. or even more HDDs if you use 4x2.5" bay in the ODD bay.

the CPU in the gen8 also uses 40% more power (35W vs 25W) - though can do much more work per watt

        • +1

the CPU in the gen8 also uses 40% more power (35W vs 25W)

This is pretty misleading. At the same load it will be very similar.

      • built one with m-atx or m-itx with low-powered PSU.
should be around the same or lower price?

  • Can anyone advise how loud these things are when running? Looks like a big fan in the back, are they as loud as a normal server?

    • They are not, noise level are similar to the n54l. There is an issue when raid is set to AHCI, that it is noisy, but when used as raid is fine. HP is working on it.

    • Is it easy to change the stock fan to a quieter one?

      • +1

Changing the fan in a Gen8 is just like any PC however the Active Health System is programmed to expect the RPM reported by the OE Delta fan and it will issue shutdown requests if the RPM is out of range

    • As a general rule, the bigger the fan the quieter. Smaller fans need to spin faster for the same result which creates more noise.

  • Bigger fans usually mean quieter fans as they can shift more air.

    • Sure, but stock fans are typically not quiet enough no matter how big they are (for people who are used to silent builds).

  • Megabuy have changed their act for the better lately with great communication via email. I have not needed to contact them via phone which I believe I have read some months back the staffs have been rather rude. Keep up the good work Megabuy.

    • Heh, the person I spoke to on the phone two months ago was pretty rude. Email contact was non-existent as well. I wonder if they've changed in the past two months.

      • The replaced their disgruntled EMO 1-man customer service with a new 'happy' 1-man customer service

        • Hmm. After that episode I decided if they couldn't be bothered with basic customer service, I'll just shop elsewhere.

If they really did replace the guy with someone who actually has people skills, maybe they're worth a try again. Maybe.

That looks preeeety! Ah, damn if only I could justify a reason to upgrade from my Synology DS211j :(

    • Synology have been Godlike for me so far :) Happy to stick with them!

      • Yeah I like the Synology a lot! And using a couple of other programs (mostly DS File, DS audio) and also SABMobile I can access SABnzbd remotely and also move files around all on my iPad/iPhone. Is there was a simple way of doing that with a Windows based NAS, I'd consider the swap. Considering I have Windows Server 2012 key waiting to be used.

I have run out of space though and have a couple of drives ready, but will have to connect them through an external enclosure, would rather be able to add them internally, hence itching for an upgrade.

  • hmm this with four of the 4TB drives from dicksmith/office works… Drools

(and comes out at 950 rather than $1299 - that said this deal is for reds…)

    • I really want 6TB drives for my next upgrade, hoping for next year. 5TB should be out by the December (might cause 4TB to drop in price a little).

  • +2

Totally off-topic but that looks to me like a funky built-in oven.

  • Well I pulled the pin and placed an order. I'd been monitoring prices for the 1610t against HB Outlet (out of stock) and Shopping Express - including 16GB (2x8GB), 1220v2 CPU and Win 2011 Home server and this deal was comfortably cheaper so thought I've placed an order. Note that shipping is charged for each item ordered - so as I ordered 4 items shipping was about $65 and there will be 4 deliveries.

Fingers crossed they all turn up soon.
