Virgin Mobile BYO Plans Bonus 1GB Data $20 Plan with 1.2 Gig (Works on 4G)

130

Virgin are currently offering 1GB bonus data on their BYO plans…

If your like me and make barely any calls finding a mobile plan is just about the data… Also I have to stay with virgin as that's the family choice for free calls….

I was already on the old $30 plan with 1GB and now I've dropped to one of the new ones @ $20 with 1.2GB because of the bonus data.. I just rang and asked to change plans and confirmed taht I'd get the free data.. The billing month has rolled around and now the virgin usage app on my phone is showing 1.2G

Edit: Works with 4G phones
"Those lucky folk with compatible 4G devices connected to any Virgin Mobile postpaid plan will be able to use the Optus 4G network where it's available"(from the T&C)

  • The extra data allowance is good, but they dropped the call allowance :( (was $250 on the $19 BYO)

  • I am also looking for a plan that I will use mainly for data - would this be the cheapest/get the most GB's for the lowest price' plan around?

    • No, this works out as $0.66 per day, with 40.96MB per day of data.
Woolworths give you 5GB over 45 days for $26.10 when you use their Rewards card or $29 if you don’t. So either $0.58 or $0.64 per day; with 113.77MB per day of data.

With Virgin, can you use the data to tether? You can’t with Woolworths.

      • I was using the woolworths data to tether everyday.

And the data actually rolls over so at one point I had over 8gb.

        • impoze….how do you tether with Woolworths data….i have an iPhone and have been told by their call centre that i cant…not only cant i tether but stuck with 3G.

        • +1

With Woolworths, You can tether with an android phone but not with an non-jail break iphone.

        • Thanks Vash12….my son, whose name ends with Vash favourite number of 12 will be thrilled !

        • Im pretty sure no rollover on woolworths mobile… www.woolworthsmobile.com.au/faqs

        • Thanks, this just made me realise what a fool I was. I was so used to setting up tethering on another iPhone that has iOS 6, I just thought that the section was greyed or something on mine with the Woolworts sim.
But noooo, I am on iOS 5.1.1 Jailbroken (missed the iOS JB window) so it is ina different location. I just googled what the situation was rather than ask you questions that already have plenty of answers elsewhere, and just installed PdaNet

        • Yup, the FAQ says no rollover, but both me and the wife has had ours rolled over during the last recharge.

      • Alas I have to stay with Virgin! the family are all on Virgin too….

And yep can tether with my phone

    • or if 5gb is too much then aldi has 2gb for $15/30days plus $15/365days for voice/sms

I miss Bean Counter. An updated version of it with data included is the only thing that might woo me back.

I got in a year or so ago when they had the extra 2gig and it was $450/m credit.

    So I get $450/m + rollover +2.2gb data for $19 :-)

    • Same for me never use it all though. Probably would if I lived in an area that had better optus coverage.

    • As am I, seems to have rollover credit too…

Included Value $12.38 of $450.00 used $437.62 left
      Rollover $0.00 of $107.66
      Data 36MB of 2.2GB used 2.2GB left

I've been pretty impressed with Virgin. No issues, kick ass for $19 a month. Auto alerts when approaching included limits, cut offs when over cap etc.

i still use woolworths mobile, get 10% off recharges with woolworths everyday rewards card so works out $26.10 and lasts 45 days instead of normal 30 days like other telcos, get $250 worth of calls/txt to anyone and another $250 to any optus network numbers and 5gb of data. using same optus network as virgin does. i still can not believe how cheap it works out to be and i never reach 5gb limit

    • Is the Woolworths prepaid offer using Optus 4G? Does not seem to say on their website.

      • Woolies does not, nor would 4g seem relevant to a majority of user handsets. It is of low consequence. But it's some time since I would've assessed 1.2gb's relevant for even 3-G pointed- tech.
In appraisal : no not any substitute for contemporary 113.77MB/d woolworths' averages.

Re-sellers promulgating various overage model structure, I find even sillier and more egregious. Opt Pre-paid/fixed data -or- NO offering.

  • No 4g no thanks. Vaya 1.5gb 4g 17$P/m 600$ calls and unlimited txt. +7$ per 1gb packs. Best by a mile.

    • Need a 4G SIM? Easy. Just pick one of the great BYO options below, select the right SIM size, and tick the box before you complete your purchase.

Agree. Uses Optus 4g and smashes OP deal completely

    • Except it misses my brief… Must be on Virgin.. Otherwise my wife's phone bill will sky rocket

so this is pretty close when I only use about 30% of the calls… And I have call roll-over for if I have a massive month..

      • Likewise, it's why my bro and I are both on Virgin. Most of our contacts list are Virgin customers too. Out of the regular contacts, only mum and dad aren't but we call them on VOIP.

The Simple pre-paid plan works a treat for me with 15c /min calls and SMS to other users. 100Mb per 90days is more than sufficient on a Nokia E63 for checking emails. Amaysim is better for data which is why I use that on my Lumia 520.

  • if you just want data on 4g, you can't beat the iPad 3gb sim packs that often sell for $10.:-D

  • +2

Why do people say includes $600 calls and not explain the call rate? It could easily be $10/minute.

    • Rate is ~2-3$ for 2min call

    • That's why Optus now is showing their plans in minutes not amount of $$$

  • Mobile contracts are significantly more expensive comparing to last year. Like sharkfan12 and blkcar above, I was on the $29 big plan (+$20 to get an GS3 which was just released) with 2G bonus data last year and it gives me $450 credit + 2.25G 4G data. Weak AUD has its drawback :|

    • I don't think the weak aud has much to do with the price rises. I'd say the industry consolidation has reduced competition resulting in higher prices. Companies are also trying to recover the cost of constructing the 4g networks.

  • I have done a comparison btw woolworth and virgin.
woolworths in 30days it work out
    Cost: $19.33/month (vs Virgin $20)
$166.67 any network (vs $200 any network~ little higher call rate)
3.3G in mb increments (vs 1.2g in kb increments)

Both Credit can use for int call (which quite importance for me, i make a few int call each month)
woolworth prepaid, virgin month by month no contract

I believe most other "bargain mobile plan" doesn't inc int call, except TPG. But they charge ~$50 extra upfront. At least Virgin charge me $0, and pay the bills end of the billing cycle not before, which is a bonus. And yes, i am with this $20 plan, and my mother got $19 ($450calls, 2.25G)plan, which is the best plan I've known.

    • Virgin also includes unlimited Virgin to Virgin
      * Video Calls
      * Voice Calls
      * SMS
      * MMS

      • I also like Virgin data in kb, which may probably work out better than 3.3G in mb.

    • You are forgetting the 10% discount on Woolworths with their freely available Rewards card, so it is $17.40 per 30 days.

    • Quite. At '$20.00/month' spend level, Woolworths will supply data equal to Amaysim.

      ($20 / (0.95 * 0.90 * $19.33)) * 3.33 GB =
      4.029 GB

payWave 5% lowers it effective to $16.53 per 30 days, & I may recharge 3G often.

  • you're better off going on Vaya's $18/mo plan

    1.5GB
    $650 call credit
    unlimited SMS
call rates/flagfall also cheaper by total of about 10-15c
    unlimited vaya to vaya
    same 4G network

    • Vaya has a lot of negative reviews on Whirlpool. Not sure it's worth the hassle.

    • vaya's call credit can't be used for International calls though, it is very good for people who never call international call.

  • Excess data usage charged at 20.5c per MB wow that high.

  • Considering their 1+1 GB a fraction what WOW/Aldi/Boost/Amaysim all supply ( <300% more @ about 40.oo$ funds).. you can tell 205.oo/g were designed, to gut the gullible & across the whole range. + NB others like OP, also check Yatango\prepay\ quote: 3GB/100min/0 $26/mo.
