Sony NEX-F3 $380 Olympus EPM-1 $225 at Harvey Norman

110

Picked up Sony NEX-F3 for $380 at Harvey Normat Mcgrath Hill today. Was tossing between the NEX and Olympus EPM-1 which was on special for $225. Looks to be nation wide, but very few stock left. I can confirm that at McGrath Hill there was 1 NEX and 1 EPM-1 left. I also noted 1 NEX-F3 at Martin Place.

personally i think the DJ Nikon V1 is better value

    • Yes bought one very happy with the photo quality.

Although the Sony have a bigger sensor but the fast auto focus on V1 is more important I reckon.

      • Agreed, Nikon V1 so good in turns of the fast auto focus is unreal. Love taking photos using it.

        • I have the Nikon J1. It was very good for casual video, but it stopped powering on. Was also contemplating the DJ V1 deal. I really wanted focus peaking feature, to use my DSLR lenses on it for video, and Sony NEX was about the only thing I could find in this price range that had focus peaking.

  • Dick Smith still have the sony F3 at $360, just went to a store in Gippsland and they have 4 in stock

    • WOW they still have it? But I think most already out of stock and not even on their site anymore.

      • Yeah not on the website anymore, and I am not sure whether other stores have them. The store have it is Traralgon one which is far from city

  • Thanks for sharing OP

    • I couldn't believe Harvey Norman had the cheapest price on an Olympus EPM1. Very hard to find cheap stuff at Harvey Norman.

Quick Review on the Sony NEX-F3.

Image quality: Better than Nikon J1, about the same as Nikon D7000. AF was surprisingly quick(indoors shooting).
Video Quality: On par with Nikon J1. Was surprised, it had silent auto focus during video. A little bit slower AF than Nikon J1, but nothing really noticeable. Feels like a little less noisy than J1, but J1 video quality is very good.

Very easy to use. Not for people who need all the bells and whistles. The 18-55 lens is quite good. I hear it is better IQ than the new 16-50 lens.

The articulated LCD display is fantastic. Very good for taking video of infants where you need to have the camera as low as possible.

The only con that I can think of is also a pro. It doesn't come with a separate battery charger. It charges via USB. Takes long time to charge. Good for when you are traveling light.

This will replace my D7000 for most of my casual shooting.

    Verdict: Fantastic!

  • Expired.

  • Anyone have any opinions on this compared to the NEX-5N deal? (or the NEX-5R body-only mentioned in the post?).
The F3 is obviously cheaper, but do you get better value from the 5N/R? I had a quick look at the specs & nothing jumped out at me as a clear differentiator.

    • I think the 5R is the newest model but anyway both expired.

    • The 5N/R are slimmer. Have touch screen. The 5R has better AF. If this is going to be your only camera, maybe consider the 5R. I already have DSLR cameras at home so the NEX-F3 suited me.
