AVG's reviews haven't been the best lately, not sure if I should just keep using my Bitdefender that I got from Westpac?

    • +2

Bitdefender probably wins for me because I've got 3 years left, and another few years more of registration codes on top of that. :P

      • are you using pirated version?

        • +2

No; I have several codes from St George/Westpac, and I also received some codes for free through this (now expired) offer: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/91681

Not sure why the download file ending with Huawei. I feel unsafe to install Huawei in my computer.

    • +3

because its a promo from Huawei & AVG

Really on what grounds? Following the US scare mongering I gather… baaaa baaaaa

      • Our data is collected for almost everything we do using hardware and internet across networks.

Huawei… No, thanks. A decision not based on any US scare "mongering".

        • But you'ld be stealing from the Chinese military!

        • you know your isp uses Huawei tech in your internet cables and nodes right

        • Yes. So whatever is collected is collected. Out of our control.

"Our data is collected for almost everything we do using hardware and internet across networks."

It creeps me to have Huawei monitor my pc as well.

        • Why do you believe Huawei would monitor your PC?

        • Not sure. It just creeps me out that we have to DL from the promo link.

That's a first. I've only ever had promotions from companies done via usual DL, then entering a code or whatnot from the supporter/promoter.

Edit: As in the potential to monitor, if able.

AVG has a history of updates breaking it and preventing legitimate access…
Huawei, well, even the government wont go near them…

    Pass

  • Not free anymore?

    • Clicked on the wrong link It works.

  • How is BitDefender better?

  • -3

    Better off with Avira Free
    AVG has poor detection rates

  • +1

    Avast > AVG

    • +3

+1 for AVast. It's free, with real-time protection and light on resources. AVG is a resource hog

  • +1

Happy with the few years of Norton. No matter what people say it is actually decent since Symantec took them over. No lag whatsoever and it scans every download and compares with multiple properties. + it was free. :D

    • +6

      Soooo… since 1990?

      • +1

I probably should have said since the redesign.

        • +2

Since NIS2013, Norton 360 is still garbage though.

  • +9

Better off with Microsoft Security Essentials, works much better and is perpetually free.

    • MSE/NSA for the win! Just on a side note bit-locker is easily bypassed by NSA.

      • Is your OS USA made and connected to the net? Encrypting data is useless when the OS has back doors.

    • Ditto. If you use Win 7, stick to MSE. If Win 8, you don't need extra AV software.
Plus, if any software related to the Chinese, you have high chance getting spywared.

      • Is MSE adequate with Win XP as that's what I've been using for the last 6 months. Prior to this I hadn't had any anti virus for at least a year.

        • +1

MSE has fallen off the charts in recent years, failling the AV Comparison test twice in a row.

Researchers at the London-based Dennis Technology Labs threw Microsoft's free antivirus program, Microsoft Security Essentials (along with eight additional programs), in the testing gauntlet — and the results were poor. The tests were done on Windows XP machines and used current real-world malware threats to measure the effectiveness of some of the most popular antivirus programs.

If you're using Windows XP, you should always keep Windows updated as it is the oldest OS currently supported by Microsoft and has the most security vulnerabilities.

        • According to AV Test (http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/home-user/windows-7/mayjun-2…)

          In Win7:
          Bitdefender>AVG>Avast

and MSE has a very poor rating.

        • +2

It is a joke that MSE protection score is 0. I doubt how much credibility of this "independent" organisation has. Can any MSE users who have virus infected report here? I have been using MSE since the day it was released and never skipped a beat. And by performance MSE is much better than most of other AV software such as Norton and Sophos etc. Forget the reports. Let the real experience speaks.

        • +2

As I read it (AV-Comparatives, AV-Tests scores) as far as detection rates MSE has gone from very good to dire over the past few years.

A system that seems to be running well isn't a good measure of how effective an AV has been. Many malware strains become more valuable the longer they aren't detected by the user so don't expect to be shown signs that they reside on your computer.

        • It's a shame they didn't do a comparison of free Comodo. It is (apparently) the leading free commercial A/V. The only complaint I have about it is that it changed my DNS (it does this so that when you're browser asks for a page that is dangerous it can give you a warning rather than being served a dangerous page) which made my work PC lose contact with the internal web server but we figured it out after a day. Also I don't like anyone other than my ISP (who already knows what I'm looking at) knowing my internet usage.

    • +1

The Ahnlab product actually fairs worse than the Win 7 out-of-box protection. That's the opposite of what an AV should be doing!

    • AVG looks pretty bad on that chart, though I do wonder what user dependent actually means.

    • +2

"User-dependent" means that the user is asked to decide if something is malicious. The results shown are instances where a user decides it isn't but it actually was, ie the AV asked but should have blocked it anyway.

  • doesn't work on mine :(
stated serial no. could not be recognised…..

    • yeah the 64bit version didnt work for me but the 32bit did

      • No spyware found?

  • +1

    KILL IT WITH FIRE.

  • +3

    Another vote for MSE

  • Any spyware or virus comes with this free AVG software?

  • +2

I would go with Kaspersky anytime over these two and aldi is going to have it on special from 11/9 for 24.99

    • -1

      haha you must be joking

      • Kaspersky for paid
        MSE for free.
Or use your commonsense and just don't use one.

        • Nowadays we get paid for using antivirus, why pay $25?
like some previous deals, Trend Micro, Norton, Bitdefender, either free or you could even get a profit, and they are not really any worse than Kaspersky.

        • -2

Kaspersky for paid, Avast for free. It is better than MSSE just be sure to turn off Sounds because they quickly become annoying lol

        • And yet OP claims to save $70 and $50 respectively. I am sure if you do a little bit of research you are able to find Kaspersky for free too, saving $25 ;)
Compare free with free and paid with paid.

My post however was related to the quality of the virus detection engine not the savings you make. I am using Avast free version and its detection is satisfactory. In Avast settings you can adjust the notifications ;)

      • Not a joke, can confirm the deal:

        http://www.discountstoresau.com/aldi-catalogue/special-buys-…

Although the deal is only for "Kaspersky Pure", I prefer "Kaspersky Internet Security" - The UI seems nicer to me.

  • Just installed the free version of Avast and detects 5 infected files where as AVG antivirus detects ZERO! Looks like AVG isn't good anymore.

    • Could be some false positives involved.

      • antivirus always give false positives

  • Avast is better than Microsoft Security Essentials?

  • +1

I've been using MSE, but recently was recommended Zone Alarm with their free AV which turns out to be Kapersky AV so a good firewall and a good rating AV for free. http://www.zonealarm.com/security/de/zonealarm-free-antiviru…

    • How do you know its Kapersky AV in zone alarm?

  • perfect timing.

I was thinking about trying out a new Antivirus software last night
and stumble upon this today :p
