WD MyNet N900 Router - $59 (Was $99) - Pickup or $10.44 Shipping (to 3000)

170

This N900 dual-band router with 7 Gigabit Ethernet ports is down from MSY's price of $99 to $59.

Received a decent review here: http://techreport.com/news/23109/western-digital-gets-into-t…

Seems substantially lower than Staticice pricing of around $150.

A good deal if you need lots of ports.

    does not support dd-wrt

    • Thank you.

    • May not have all the latest features but I bought a couple of these DIR-632s for around the house and they support DD-WRT. Been more than happy with them.

      • big killer is 10/100

        • Granted gigabit would be nice. Although we run two XBOX 360s as Media Centre Extenders for my HTPC and 10/100 hasn't caused any issues with tv and movie streaming. I have a WNDR3800 Gargoyle as the main router with the two 632s LANed off that at opposite ends of the place.

Next cheapest price is $49.99 US on Newegg (not including shipping) $66.50 US on Amazon (not including shipping), and prices from Aussie retailers start at $150: http://www.shopbot.com.au/pp-western-digital-my-net-n900-pri…

    $248 at JB Hi-Fi.

Somebody from the MSY Clan has definitely married a Western Digital executive given the flurry of WD price dumps at MSY lately.

    • And these wouldn't be parallel imports would they?

      • Practically, it doesn't matter because either way, you'd only get the minimum (Statutory) 1 year warranty.

    • maybe it is a pricing error

    Other reviews not soo kind.

    • Well it's missing a lot, especially stuff you'd expect given it's retail price like an external antenna socket, USB 3.0 or 802.11ac.

The other thing to consider is that while Western Digital are all in all, a great storage manufacturer, I'm not too sure they know much about networking.

  • If you downloading a file, does it still go to the PC first then transfer to the router's internal HD?

    • pc, this does not have a internal hd

    • possibly you can use a usb stick as storage

You can easily use any hard drive that already contains data, plug it into one of the USB ports, and have that shared across the network. By default, the content of the drive is shared with full access to everybody, but you can restrict the access via user account. Other than sharing data, you can also use the router to stream digital content to DLNA-enabled network media players, such as the WD TV Live Hub. There's no easy way to connect to the router's shared storage via the Internet, however, other than the FTP feature, which is generally not easy enough for home users to use. WD said that the cloud-based storage features will be available with the My Net N900 Central that comes with built-in storage.

  • I think the more relevant question is whether there are other routers available that provide the same PRIMARY features and performance for $59.

Sure there are a heap of N900 dual band routers, but from a bang for buck perspective this surely seems worth considering.

Yes, it's not supported by dd-wrt/openWRT. Yes, it doesn't have external antenna connections (you can open it up and rig your own connections, but that's another story!). And yes, it's not exactly from a 'mainstream' router brand…

But it has simultaneous dual band operation, a 7-PORT gigabit switch and what appears to be a dynamic QoS feature.

Maybe for the more advanced user there might be a better choice, but perhaps it might be good to keep things in perspective here.

  • Isn't this the same router that MSY had on sale for $29 a couple months ago? Can't get a + vote in that case.
    ** edit **
my bad. It was the N750 that was $29.

    • That was the N750 I believe. I bought one of them it's also dual band, 4 giga-bit ports but otherwise pretty much the same I think.

I haven't had any issues with it

Thinking of donating the N750 to the parents and replacing it with this one.

      • good idea if you need the extra ports. I don't think many laptops support 450 mbps on 2.4 or 5 Ghz, so N750 is practically as good as N900.

      • I don't think the N750 has the dynamic QoS (called Fastrack PLUS or something).

The N900 has the PLUS version, while the N600/N750 has the 'regular' non-PLUS version.

  • I found this WD Mynet N900 Router price is $49.99 free shipping (not sure but NSW 2000 is free) at Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833146…

  • Noob question, but can this connect to my internet via wifi so I can then plug my xbox and TV to the router?

  • Can this handle processing data coming through an 25/5 NBN connection (ie no bottlenecking on router)?
