Guys, read the post carefully before you post ur comment or give it a -1 rating!

Just saw the Dell Optilex ad but its all sold out, so I thought I'd share this one with you. I bought my Dell GX280 from a mob on Ebay for $194 exactly a month ago and I'm quite happy with it.

Specification:

Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz with Hyper Threading, 40GB SATA HDD, 1GB DDR2 RAM, DVD-ROM, Gigabit Ethernet, 1x low profile PCI-e slot, 2x PCI slots. Onboard sound, Onboard Video (8MB), Intel 82915G chipset, Windows XP Professional with service pack 3

Their address is:

Quantum Corporate Park
Unit 23/287 Victoria Rd
Rydalmere NSW 2116
Tel: 02 9898 9531

The system comes with a keyboard and mouse, I didn't want them so I got $5 off, but I had to speak to their manager.

I know their website says $249 and its only a P4 2.8GHz. But it probably hasn't been updated for a while. But by all means, double check with them.

p.s. I later bought a PCI Creative X-Fi Xtreme sound card for $65 off Ebay and a USB Linksys wireless-n adapter for $50 off a mate.

Not a very good deal. no screen key board or mouse.

These are ex government pcs they arent worth anything. maybe $50
considering you can get a whole pc with a screen k/b mouse etc for about 600-800 with a new warranty not worth the small savings I reckon.

    • I disagree,

Comes with XP Pro which is still impossible to get for under $90 (usually more). So the Computer is ~ $100 which is about right for a P4 (25) with MoBo (15) Ram (10) HDD (10) Case (15) PSU (15) DVD (15).

Anyways, decent enough deal if all you want is windows OS & and office + internet machine.

I already have a 22" LCD screen, and I just wanted something basic. Actually I have a similar PC at work, and they both run great for what I need.

With the current exchange rate, a new Dell Inspiron desktop PC still costs around $700 these days without a monitor. You can check their website. So $400 - $500 is not exactly a small saving I reckon.

$250 is far too expensive for this system

    • obviously you haven't read my post carefully. Its $194 not $250.

      • uhm, my bad.

  • Lol, where were these whingers when the Zazz deal got posted? The Zazz deal sold out this morning and only had 3 votes to it, yet has now made it to the front page?

If you can get citybargainhunter's price of $194 for the system he specified, it's a much better deal than the Zazz one (~$260 incl delivery for an equivalent system)

    • The Zazz one, Dell Optiplex, is a much better machine than GX280. We got lots of both at work so I know the differences…

  • To give you an idea of the price point, my work has been throwing away machines of this spec. I have about 20 of these exact machines in my garage as a result.

    • Where are you located? Can I have one? :) Anyway, not everyone is as lucky as you. At my workplace, most of us are still using P4 Celerons.

p.s. what are you planning to do with all those PCs? Peronally, I'd sell them on Ebay for $150 a piece.

  • I challenge any of you to find a 1MB RAM stick for that price. (product title description mistake?)

Sorry, don't mean to nitpick on it. :)

  • @blitz - your company threw away 20 copies of xp pro? Such waste!

    • Oh many more than that. I often find such software being thrown away. This is the reality of modern corporate software licensing.

  • Arent these the computers with the infamous dodgy capacitor issue?

    • Links? I'm not being defensive about my PC, but I've never heard of such issue. I've been using mine for the past 4 week on a daily basic, yet to experience a single issue. touch wood. :)

  • The link goes to a 2.8GHz version with only 512MB RAM….

    • read my post carefully please!

"I know their website says $249 and its only a P4 2.8GHz. But it probably hasn’t been updated for a while. But by all means, double check with them."

  • Last week I got a GX280 for $70 refurbished on ebay so not very cheap at all. Only difference it has 512mb memory not 1gb.

  • The title is wrong.

    Should be 2.8ghz and 512 RAM, not 3.0g / 1 GB.

    • Obvioulsy you haven't read my post carefully.

This would have got a positive from me if they were brand new but its all USED/REFURBISHED=Not worth it

Title/description should state this so other ozbargainers don't think they are purchasing new gear…

    • where do you get brand new Pentium 4 PCs these days?

  • This deal is weird.
You bought your Dell Optiplex off eBay yet you link to a store that sells them for $249- well above going rate.
eBay have them now for $140-$180 so its even cheaper.
Shipping interstate will add $25-$35 as its a heavy system.
Best bet to get one with pick up in your state.

What would be better, one of these or a ASUS EEE PC Box 202?

    • nothing weird about it, I found them on Ebay, but I picked up the PC from their store since its not far from me.

      Read my post carefully.

"I know their website says $249 and its only a P4 2.8GHz. But it probably hasn’t been updated for a while. But by all means, double check with them."

  • Here you go. Well known issue with these, however I am not saying you WILL have a problem. Just beware that's all.

    • Ouch! Now that explains why it was on special at Zazz with a 3 month warranty!

    • ok, thanks for the link. Now I just need to find out when my PC was manufactured.

From TFA, only "system boards….manufactured from April 2003 to March 2004" are affected.

    • Thanks Antman for the article.
How can I find out which Dell Optiplexes had the Intel D865GBF motherboard?

    • looks like I got nothing to worry about, just checked against the service tag on Dell's website:

      Service Tag: 1YJ6G1S
      System Type: OptiPlex GX280
      Ship Date: 8/2/2005
      Dell IBU: Asia / Pacific

I'd say it was manufactured after March 2004 :)

  • Problem is I don't have one yet.
I'm looking to get one for no more than $180.
Will the eBay seller tell me the service tag?

Where is the Motherboard part of the System Info?

  • I don't know about the price, but these are excellent PCs for their age.
Much better than your average P4 - very small and quiet so would make a great HTPC.
More than enough power for high-def digital TV, just add a low-profile DVB card.

One warning: you might have trouble fitting a new hard-disk inside, as
they use low-profile disks. It can be done though.
