That's more like $5 for a SIM card with no mobile service.

    • +3

i tried dodo from one of their previous mobile broadband promotions and i didn't experience anything bad with their service

    • Any broadband connection is good than Vodafone in my area.

      • I'd rather use Vodafone or one of the resellers than anything that uses Optus.

    • +1

Dodo are just Optus MVNO aren't they? So you should at least get the same Optus coverage.

      • I don't think they rent all of their towers, which is how they can be cheaper.

        • dodo excludes optus 4g

    • Maybe he meant that this is a pure data SIM without SMS/Phone capabilities?

      • Maybe I meant the speed will be slow.

Oh wait - now I actually meant that nobody received the SIM card yet after 2 weeks!

  • +1

Wont be dispatched till the end of the sale period. May take up to three weeks to arrive. Must be activated within 30 days of receipt

    • Yes, that 30 day limit is an issue.

Also what's that about "if you have 4 or more prepaid SIMs you can't activate this one"?

      • Probably C'wth gov't getting in your way, eg, with anti-terrorism laws… can't have more than 4 in same name.

(From memory, this all began after friends or family members gave SIMs to real terrorist(s) & the SIMs were used in acts of terror. I don't get how such a limit on SIM's in one name can help stop terrorism… maybe it somehow -reduces- workloads of investigators?)

        • No, the 4 SIM limit is not mandated by the government. I know a lot of people out there with more than 4 SIMs thanks to the Telstra offers.

        • +4

There is actually no SIM limit. The incorrect 5 sim limit idea comes from a question on the ACMA form.

If the prepaid sim purchase will result in the person having five or more active services, the seller must request more ID (2 category A docs instead of 1, or 1 cat A and 2 cat B).

That's it - anyone can buy and activate as many sims as they like.

          http://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2005C00313

          (1) The carriage service provider must obtain a total of 30 points of identifying information about the end-user of the service.

          (2) However, if the end-user informs the carriage service provider that the activation of the service will result in the end-user having 5 or more activated pre-paid public mobile telecommunications services, the carriage service provider must obtain a total of 40 points of identifying information about the end-user.

The AMTA checklist has the same info:

    • oh god thats dodgy.
I would not trust living social EVER - they are horrid… read some reviews online and had a non delivery myself…

  • Just wish a provider would release one with a quota that has a yearly expiry…

Anyway already on a grandfathered Vaya 3G plan that comes with 1.5gb/mth that I hardly ever use up so might pass on this one. Good if you have a MiFi though for light web use over 2mths or if you have a holiday between Aug-Oct.

    • Telstra and Optus do. You just pay through the nose for it. :)

      • That one year expiry is for your call credit only. The data packs do not have a one year expiry. I think what grab_ur_freebies (and also myself) want to know if there are any prepaid providers that offer a reasonable prepaid data service that has a one year expiry.

For example, 5 gigs to use in 12 months would be good for the infrequent user who usually runs their tablet off WiFi.

    • Listen to the above who posts (links to)half of the T sales discounts.
tonester decodes it all quite well, alwy latching onto the _ real deals.

Fancy another of 'group buy sites to obtain a regular commodity? /nah

    • In the good ol' days of dialup, Win NT used to let you connect multiple modems to 1 NT box (if you had enough serial ports).

You then got increased Internet speed, via use of 2 or more concurrent Internet connection. (The modems could even be connected to -different- ISPs.)

Is there - today, eg, with Android devices - any way to do similar speed-boosting by connecting to multiple Internet connections (eg, via Bluetooth & WiFi) concurrently…?

If you could, then try using 1-3 of these SIM's & $5 60-day offers (in as many devices), ie, -concurrently- - perhaps even -with- your current, [slow] mobile Internet connection… :-)

      • There isn't unfortunately, at least not in the same way. That old method required the other end to support MPPP.

you can do load balancing with multiple 3G connections, but the speed of any one download won't be faster than the speed of a single connection.

If you're only downloading files and use a download manager however, that might be a different story. :)

        • So, we often have multiple downloads running concurrently, eg, up to 6 podcasts flowing in - at once - via Juice (a podcast fetcher).

      • Connectify Dispatch apparently lets you do that on your PC http://www.connectify.me/dispatch/

        • That's still load balancing. The speed of any one download still won't be faster than the speed of a single connection.

          http://www.connectify.me/dispatch-technology-overview/

So the movie does not get more bandwidth than a single connection can provide

MPPP is different in the sense that you get one fat pipe. e.g. if you had two 53k connections in MPPP, you would be able to download a file at a whopping ~10-12KB/s after overheads. With load balancing you'd be able to download two files at 6-7KB/s each, max.

With load balancing the increased speed comes when your application loads many things at once, e.g. web page elements, torrents, or download managers. Single-socket tasks like watching youtube and downloading a file with your browser won't be sped up.

    • Now that the deal has been extended, Aug - Oct will probably become Sep - Nov.

  • This is only for a voucher. How do I get the SIM card ?? Are there any hidden shipping costs ?

    • +2

It says voucher but there you are required to enter a shipping address, there are no further instructions, and the "voucher" is pretty much a receipt. So I'm assuming they do everything and ship it to you.

  • Apologies for the above post (didn't know about the referral rule)..

FYI there is a referral system - 3 people use your link and your purchase is free (?).

  • good for people with dual sim capability :)

    • +1

How about if someone has a unlocked 3g Modem? It should be worked, I think.

      • Yeah an unlocked modem will work

      • If the modem/dongle supports the 3G bands 900/2100 that dodo (optus reseller) use then it should be fine.

  • +10

Yay, my first deal to make the front page

    • A great deal OP. Definitely will grow up more if enough number of vouchers are available. Also this will work for any tab with 3G.

    • That's what happens when you post bargains.

  • +1

Perfect for the iPad. Nice deal, thanks OP.

  • "Must be activated within 30days of receipt"?? How are they going to know you got it, and when exactly?

  • Which network is Dodo on?

  • Yes exceeding deal for those who'll use a 1gig of data per month, perhaps.. although I' know few who would. g-next 850, remains a unique deal for ~ $5.00/gb at the present moment.

    • what deal is $5/gb?

    • ipad 0.5 price $15/3 gb micro sim card as the one I'd stock up previously, however since then has Aldi bolt-on become a (even) better substitute, broadband service.

      • Why should mobile service providers -care- if their data is used by an iPad or some other device?!?

I think ACCC rules -prohibit- deals that (essentially) require one to buy/use a particular brand/model of 2nd product to be able to use the service in the "deal."

(So, is Apple subsidising such deals or what…?)

      • Yeah I know right - All it does is to say they retain the right..but iMac>Telstra never came to actually DO anything/ after the.fact. Would-be not adding to profit to acting; and then to our consumer advantage..Go the 3GB i-Tabs.

  • +4

I can confirm that Dodo is on the Optus Network.

There are no hidden delivery costs Australia wide.

I am just trying to get confirmation but I believe the 30 day activation is from the date the item is dispatched from Dodo. I will report back when I know for sure.

    • can this sim card to be use on iphone?

      • I think you can, you'll get data but can't call or text

  • Got the voucher, comes with these instructions:
    Instructions
    1) Your order will be dispatched at the
end of the sale period and may take up to
    3 weeks to deliver
    2) Please note your order will be
delivered to the address that you
    provided on the LivingSocial purchase
    page
    3) Enjoy!

  • nice deal.

  • +1

This is ironic as i got the "Dodo Philippine call centre" call today and me being such a "valued customer" offering me a $10 for 1GB data upgrade to my 3g sim.

Although tempted…NOT, i didn'd take up their offer.

Thanks OP for the post, excellent value.

  • Hey guys,

Confirmation that the 30 days to activate commences from the date the item is received.

    • +2

How do you know when I give the item as a "gift" when it's received??

Every sim delivered is going to be registered post..?

  • -5

Optus is rubbish, unusable till 1am
Vaya 4G is rubbish, unusable till 11:30pm, only 4G in a few spots seven hills to city.
Liveconnected is slow too, painfull… i know these are all Optus but you'd expect better than 40kb/s during the day
Telstra 4G is Ok, but i noticed it too is getting congested lately, pages sometime take over a minute to load ….maybe all those ozbarganers using the $10 sims.

Don't underestimate Voda, Their 4G is fast all day, maybe because its not oversubscribed as yet. All the newspapers reporting voda in trouble with Telstra because Voda reported 4G is fastest in Australia.

    • +1

Don't underestimate Voda. Their 4G is fast all day.

Vodafone offers good phones that's all. Even no 3G Signal in many NSW areas. After moving from 3 mobile, Voda is the worst connection I have ever seen.
      Agree with Telstra.

    • Don't underestimate Voda, Their 4G is fast all day,

That's because no one is on them anymore ;)

  • anyone know if you can use iphone 4 for this sim card? or you really need usb modem?

    • +1

It would work as a normal sim, just no voice/sms service I'd imagine..

    • Includes SIM card suitable for both standard and micro slots

When you order select "micro sim card". iphone 4 supports micro sim card
Agree with Koonit. It will support only data then.

      • So, get a Skype subscription (We pay US$ 149 / year for unlimited calls to over 40 countries, some incl'g mobiles) & use your data to feed Skype's VoIP engine. :-)

I don't know if any of MyNetFone's soft-phones or later app's work on iPhones… but they do on Android tab's, even tab's that don't work (by themselves) as mobiles.

Getting MyNetFone's softphone to work is to open the door to "Free" (except cost of VoIP data used, if any) calls:

(Just ring people using MyNetFone by ringing their SIP numbers, rather than phone numbers. I don't know if you'd be able to ring other VoIP svc providers' SIP numbers & get through… anyone know?)

        • You don't need any branded soft phones.
In fact ,there are heaps of SIP clients for iOS, Android or Windows phones to choose from.
Ringing other people in the same VoIP network for free is a norm in the world of VoIP.
You can pay to get a DID number for your VoIP so that other people (whether they are on mobile, landline, or other VoIP network) can ring you.

        • Just be prepared to kill your battery fast if you expect to receive calls over SIP!

    • i just bought the window x8, just wondering if i can use for tethering as well with this sim card

  • I used to use Dodo prepaid wireless broadband years ago. I still have the sim and my account with them is still active. Does anyone know if I am still eligible for this offer?

    • The deal doesn't mention anything about only accepting new customers/refusing old customers, you'd just end up with two prepaid accounts.
Unless you mean you want the deal on your old SIM, then I don't know whether it would work.

  • It would be good if the double data after 12pm rule applied.

You can use optus dongles if you change the APN to dodolns1

  • i tried a dodo sim

no signal anywhere on the move

    even on the optus apn

dont recommended it, if you're on the go

if stationary at any one place, the servcie will lag if you try to stream any video or data

  • Got mine free I think?? With $5 credit on my account.. still had to enter CC details but showed up as $0.00 charge..

  • Hi I just bought 2 vouchers for $10 on this deal. Can I go and buy a $2 sim and use these vouchers now or are the sims different that they send at end of promotion.

  • You get a sense singtel optus might just be through its minion, beef up its 30 Sep: ' Half Yearly "Wholesale(prepaid) customer number" stat ? Timings here would seem instructive, take eg: = 3 week lead plus 60 days service. Might otherwise pursued this option, but that I loathe feeling -used- in such respect. blergh.

$5 = 3Gbye may seem superficially attractive , though, would one receive more compelling of a grab by,
    Yatango on 04/06/2013 - 16:31 ¶ www.onemonthfree.com.au Limit 1 per customer
(3 per household) incl. 1000 Minutes / 1000 Texts / "3"GB Data - Free Sim Until 31/07/2013 (Expires in 7 days) which has proved exceptional, just for the record.

  • How long until the voucher is received? Still haven't got mine.

  • got mine within minutes

    • Weird. Oh well, good bye $5.

  • Great deal and just in time too. Thanks OP!

  • Has anyone bought two additional vouchers for 'gifts' with the intent on using them themselves? Why is there a limit of 1 per customer but 2 extra as 'gifts' I may sound n00b I just don't get the logic. I understand the max 4 mobile SIM, but as discussed on here that is not of any real importance in law, it's used more so by companies like dodo to scare customers into recharging at higher rates instead of buying new promotions like this (I understand it is part of marketing and promotion, but I have no sympathy for companies who value new customers that much more than the customers they already service)

  • I am also interested in the max 4 mobile sim rule. How do they keep tabs on this? I just transferred my number from Amaysim to Aldi mobile. I assume the Amaysim sim is no longer active. I also have a Kogan sim that I'm currently using. Then I have a Dodo sim that is years old that I don't use anymore, but is still active. I rang up Dodo today to cancel and they told me it will automatically cancel if I don't recharge for six months. So I assume I have 3 active sims….Aldi, Kogan, and Dodo. I also cancelled a telstra sim a few weeks ago. I plan on getting this new Dodo sim and also the Yatango mobile free sim (www.onemonthfree.com.au)I will activate the Yatango sim first, cancel it, then activate the new dodo sim a month later.

Nothing beats free internet, even if the reception ain't that great :)

    • I am also interested in the max 4 mobile sim rule

      Here you go:
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/111283#comment-1514514

How do they keep tabs on this?

      I don't think they actually do…

    • I thought it was 5 or more? A transfer will automatically cancel the old one. Most providers will also cancel after a period of non-recharge.

  • Be careful with the 30 day thing.. I was outside of 30 days activating the old 10gb for $9 groupon offer (just activated now) and only have 5gb instead of 10gb.. still 5gb for $9 is good.. but 10gb would have been better (even tho it said 10gb after I entered activation codes,etc).. oh well.

    • +1

Should be OK - just give them a call.
Dodo call centre person did not seem to know anything about deal & simply activated me yesterday. But the supplied Dodo pack clearly states 10GB for first month, so not a special deal through Groupon. I was told they could not apply it until after SIM was activated - it is a 5GB bonus with this starter pack, and to ring back if not applied. May take a few days to be applied (after all it will take most people a while to go through the first 5GB). Seems nothing to do with 30day restriction. Its part of the Dodo pack promotion.

    • Dodo rang me - 10GB was already on my account from GROUPON deal, just a bit hard to interpret…
      Data (MB) : 5000
      Data Expiry : 28/08/2013

      Unlimited Pack : Yes
Unlimited Pack Info: Unlimited standard calls and text
Included Data in Unlimited Pack (MB): 4487
      Unlimited Pack International Calls(Mins): 100
      Unlimited Pack Expiry Date: 29/08/2013

That is 5GB Data Pack + 5Gb Unlimited Pack (less some use) - note the different expiry dates!
      Good value for $9

  • if worst broadband provider, customer supplier Australia *outstanding ombudsman number, weren't already of a confine there are perennially a negative experiences attached these group buys sites, always…

Supplies delivered late .. or not at ll .. OR half of that advertised. etc
People may arrive tio similar findings over time.

On a lighter note, recharged the Aldi bolt-on its first time nice and straightforward:today > $20. Re-cycled 365 starter($15) allowance for unlimited rather nicely, so voice equal unmetered & +5gb data, consolidated @$20; then $25/m to a repeated pattern cycle, possibly maybe. (but avoiding of such other headaches cited)

Might however pass to family to collect on that Yatango - free( 3)gb, trial for another hotspot.

  • Anyone received the SIM yet?

  • Not yet…still waiting…

  • Still Waiting…

  • Still waiting too - just lodged a dispute with credit card company, after getting no response from them - Living Social seems like a hoax or fraudulent deal.

  • +1

    Hey guys,

Just an update for you all. The packs will be sent out on Monday and should be received mid to end of next week depending on your location.

  • Still not received.

    • me neither

      • me either, today is thursday, Hi czechboi , can you check if all the sim card has been dispatch on monday?

        • I will check on this today for you guys.

        • i just got the sim card this morning, call the number to activate done, and then try to do step2 , no internet connection at all. i am trying to setup my new mobile htc x8 using this sim card, asking what is the username and password for apn.
i am calling your call centre, no one know about this promotion. ??????

they asked me to contact with living social because i don't have the control number???? #*#&#

        • I was confused by this too. What I ended up doing was hanging up after entering my SIM card number. Then I put the SIM in my device, connected to the network, and loaded my browser which connected to a dodo page which asked for all my personal details, but no control number. After that was finished it was activated and I'm now using the data.
