With the event of One-HD, and the very soon to be released FreeView channels, a total of over 15 digital free to air channels will be available to most households

The Yess DVB-T3688 is the perfect solution to all your Standard Definition and High Definition Digital TV recording needs. The majority of TV channels in Australia are heavily broadcasting in HD (1920x1080i)

Spot the difference between the TEAC 160-GB PVR and the Yess 640GB PVR. Other than the colour, the difference is price and the HDD capacity. The Teac unit is $449 from Retravison with 160GB. The Yess unit on the other hand is $429 with a 640GB HDD.

Basically the Yess unit has 4 times the HDD capacity of the Teac unit. This calculates to 4 times the recording capacity of the Teac unit or 240hrs of SD Digital TV vs the Teac unit which will only give you 68hrs of SD Digital TV. Furthermore if you plan on recording in HD, you'll only get 34Hrs of HD recording on the Teac unit Vs. 150Hrs on the Yess unit.

Record your favourite movies in HD without the annoyance of deleting them all the time. Bigger is better! With an average HD movie taking up 120 mins that's over 75 movies you can save without deleting.

    • Except with Freeview the Free to Air EPG is about to change. This means that either your PVR requires an update from the web to be compatible. Can someone correct me if I am wrong?

    • +1

One HD is also on Standard Definition, so still Strathfield's DVX-555u (posted first by OzPete, need to have strong reception) is the cheapest - including buying a 320GB HDD will be under 150$.

      • Strathfield’s DVX-555u

        Is this still available?

Strathfield are in administration AFAIK and won't be very much help for warranty repairs if they don't exist in a few months. If it is still available it seems a sweet deal…

          • @mawinmawin: Single SD Set top box with USB 1.1 output? HD channels usually have different movies, programs
on in the same time slot as the SD channels so you wont be able to receive then with SD

            • @choppy: I mentioned that for a cheap option as most people buy set-top boxes for old CRT TVs. Btw, interesting to see your old post - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/6970 - same one/same HDD for 399$ abt 6 months back. Considering the prices drop in HDD/Older in market, this unit price should have been driving down, isnt it?.

I have seen a copy of the Freeview guidelines and specifications, while your comments were valid months ago the guidelines have been amended
and this feature is no longer a requirement. The EPG will remain as it is in its current form. Can you imagine the issues it would create for
all those who purchased current HD-TV's and HD Set Boxes? It just not feasible

While the hype of Freeview has been heavily criticised the end result is more digital channels available on your existing TV setup.
Cant be all that bad if it's Free! Comments.

  • Anyone had any experience with Yess products. Brands like Omni, Teac, etc I normally avoid due to experience with their very low quality, very cheap, very unrelliable products.

  • Well I have just decided I want to buy something along these lines.. i've been weighing up getting one of these, getting the DVX-555u along with a multimedia hdd, or even getting a Dvico TViX with media player. now i've just got an old CRT tv right now so starting to think cheaper = better.

  • If you can find a Topfield dual tuner one get that.

  • This one from same store sounds great. When this one gets price down, could be very popular.
