How can you tell if this is powered by AC or USB? Can't see anything in the description about an adaptor.

  It's powered by AC. There are no 3TB drives powered by USB.

  Usually when it's a USB powered drive, they are referred to as a "Portable" drive.
  Technically they are still external of course :)

Ive had mine for a while now and I like it, its good that it powers down after a set time ( im guessing that they all do that lol ) even though I probably don't need it to be a external as I have a huge case…
