  • I saw this ad in the brochure this morning and it reminded me I bought these last year and put them away somewhere.
I remember them them being pretty good for the price.

    • You obviously don't drink much wine :P

  • +1

These are nice glasses, probably worth a lot more than the ten bucks Aldi charges for them… AND Aldi manages to bring them back regularly, just as we've finished drunkenly dropping and breaking the last batch! :-)

    • Bought them a few years back. Tip : buy the "red wine" glasses because the volumetric quantity per dollar is greater i.e. bigger glasses.

  • What do they use in place of lead?

    • Potash. Most German hand blown glass has been lead free for a long time, for the employees safety as much as anything.

      • So it is just plain glass then? How do they get away with calling it crystal?

for the employees safety as much as anything.

I thought that was the only reason. What is the "anything else"?

        • Normal float glass consists of sand, soda and lime. To make lead free crystal, they add potash to the mix, this results in a very hard, glossy glass, just like lead crystal (actually a bit harder than lead crystal in fact).

        • How is the refractive index? I doubt it looks as good?

        • About the same. The only difference you would pick up on is that the lead free crystal is lighter, because the barium oxide and potash that is used in place of the glass is lighter than lead.

  • The hiking socks look interesting to me. I'm curious to know what wool blend is, in terms of percentages. If someone could answer that, I will know whether its worth treking to Aldi on Saturday morning.
