  • MLN have had these hovering around $150-200 for the past few months (on and off sales).
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/MLN+Playbook

So not the cheapest, but still OK.

I suspect that was the 16Gb model, not the 64Gb one

      • +1

Correct. I've just flicked through my MLN email history and the cheapest they had was $170 for the 16GB Model (in June & April 2013) and the cheapest they have ever had the 64GB was $239 in December 2012.

Mobicity have had the 64GB Playbook for $199 in September 2012

Edit: so this deal is a pretty good price, for old tech

        • But 2012 is little a million years ago in the tech world. The price comparison is no longer valid, especially for a dead platform.

        • I agree. I meant it's a pretty good price based on the history of pricing on the device, it's the cheapest it has been in the last 6-9 months.

I don't think it's a great price for the technology.

Read "for old tech" as "but, for old tech"

Deals direct had it for this price last weekend…and that wasn't flagged as being on sale.
I smell some raise the price so we can have a sale tactics going on.

For the price, just get a 32GB Nexus 7 from Dick Smith for $199, the Playbook is well and truly a dead product.

    • +1

Those are sold out & removed from dick's website, but I do agree with you on the device. There's still stock of the Nexus 7 3G for $299, but not as much a bargain, still cheapest atm though

  • Word is a new Nexus 7 is being released soon anyway, so just wait for that. I would strongly recommend not buying any Blackberry tablet, their OS in general is struggling pretty badly ATM.

    • The CEO of Blackberry just came out saying no new OS for this tablet either, so if anyone is waiting for upgrades thy will be sorely disappointed

  • +4

Still too expensive to buy a piece of history

  • +2

    I got a 16GB one in Canada for $99. It hasn't seen any usage… Don't buy it

I've had a PlayBook for more than a year now and I've been happy with it. I agree with the comments above though, at this stage it's getting a little on the old side in relation to its specs (though I haven't heard another tablet with better speakers still

My own personal opinion on the tablet itself (rather than the deal):

I used one for about 18 months before the battery charging circuit died (out of warranty) and the tablet could not boot nor accept any charge. For the duration I had it, it was a good unit, and some Android crossover in the Blackberry App World improved things greatly. The Playbook OS interface is intuitive and I think it's still the best web-browsing tablet I've used.

But battery-related hardware issues like mine do seem prevalent from all the Google searching I did, and I was never able to have it repaired (I don't believe there is any official support channel in Australia for this tablet anymore).

I've since picked up a Galaxy Tab 2 when Bing Lee had them on sale in May at $149. I would recommend a brand other than Blackberry where you're assured to get some kind of official support channel further down the track. You'll also of course get the superior Google Play and Amazon Market app stores.

    • I just dont get the same feeling i get from Blackberry os, with android. The swiping and intuitiveness is exellent. Multitasking and swiping between apps, you just dont get that with android. Okay there is multitasking in android.

I am sorry guys but this is not a deal. I paid the same price six months ago and used it only once. It is completely end of life officially confirmed by blackberry now.

Either get a cheaper of brand android or spend a little more for a Samsung.

  • Wow a playbook. I remember it was released after I got my $99 touchpad, and I wasn't even interested at that time.

PS. Both my touchpads are still going strong, switching between CM10 and original webos 3.0.5. One has been the toy/cartoon player for my 3 yo boy since the very first day. The battery time is still around 5 to 6 hours for browsing.

    • Same here, I have been too lazy to put on CM10 or even run any of the Preware optimisations. However a few weeks ago video failed to work in any app, possibly due to too many apps running. If the kickstarter project succeeds I may make the effort to do all the above as it could be my main tablet for a long time to come.

Out of curiosity are you using the in built mp4 player and converting the toons or are you using a third party app to play other formats?

      • I bought Kalemsoft mediaplayer after used some cracked version for a little while, it's a beautiful piece of app on the dead webOS and worth every cent, although still a bit pricy (bought it for $9+?). Don't know if it performs as good on other platforms, but on webOS this seems the best solution so far, and probably will be the best forever as sadly no more apps are under developing on webOS.

  • Low specs (except the 64GB storage).

  • No Blackberry 10, no deal.

  • dead product…
