  • Fresh or imported frozen from China?

    • +4

      Most likely imported frozen.

Most places don't do it right anyways. They steam it for too long so the soup drips out.

There isn't many places which do it right, the one that i like the most would be from HuTong Dumpling Bar, since i know they definitely make it in Australia since they got chefs there making them during business hours.

They have 2 stores, Prahran and Melb CBD

      • i went to HuTong and tried the Xiao Long Bao a while ago and wasn't impressed with it and it's not cheap. I suppose when you compare them to the ones in Asia, there is no comparison given the price and quality.

        • It's quite incomparable to Asia… We don't have Asian level wages and cost of living. I remember some great cheap lunches back in Guangzhou though!

Hu Tong is probably one of the best that we do have here and it'll be cheaper than paying for a plane ticket.

personally, this one is the best in Melbourne.

msg makes them taste all the better!

        • Admittedly, yet to check this one out, but I do see a line every time I walk past it, so it must be good!

        • last time I went there, it looked pretty dirty and I heard they had been done in by the food inspectors recently, but the reviews seem pretty good.

        • 'Cash only' means they don't need to pay tax.

        • agreed with fchis.

        • The 90's called, they want their obsolete medical myths back.

      • food republik in box hill makes them too I believe

in singapore I tried din tai fung which is the same concept

    • I assume it's frozen but probably made locally by Asian manufactures. Either way, I would rather spend $15 to buy a pack of each flavor from grocery store and the $14 on beer/drinks.

And yea, HuTong is the best :)

    41% on urbanspoon…Thanks…but no thanks

    • The photos on urbanspoon look very different to the one in the scoopon link 8|

  • so after scoopon take out their percentage, this business makes about $2.17 per person. nice

  • +1

Eastern Dumpling House in Carnegie (which got excellent reviews in The Age cheap eats guide) is around $9 for a plate (12-16) which is enough for one person. So not really a bargain IMHO

    • Yes, this place is really good. As is the other one one the same side closer to Dandenong rod. I also love Shanghai taste just nearby on Waverley Rd.

      • And Pings in Clayton.

If you like frozen dumpling, you should consider going to the Asian grocery shops in Box hill, Glen Waverly and CBD - I got some cheap taste dumpling for $5.50 seafood ones @ box hill.
The better ones are the ones in box hill Raramen they make it fresh and freeze them! @ home steam or fried always yummy!

  • If you really like XLB, you should consider getting a cheap flight to Sydney!

  • i went this place once dumplings weren't that nice and they had the strangest music choice was techno …i don't mean techno as in dance music i mean techno lol

commerical road has a nice cheap dumpling place (next to the more expensive hutong) which have optoin of take away frozen which i believe are made by the store

  • with all these comments i guess i wont use this offer :]

  • was in Shanghai early this year had at least 30piece street shop only 5AUD… damn cant beat local produce. these shops make in a home with low end meats from butchers by students

    • If you go back, go here: http://goo.gl/maps/pimyG
(I hope I got the correct restaurant, the location is correct).

Best soup dumplings in Shanghai (according to the Shanghai locals). Otherwise there's also a downstairs street outlet where there was a queue at least 30 people long everytime I went past.

  • Thanks urbanspoon you've saved the day.

Probably wouldnt chance it at 41% on Urbanspoon http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/1694927/restaurant/Melbourne/…

Anytime Ive been for dumplings we come out stuffed after only $15-20 worth so its expensive too.

    • +1

please don't believe everything you read on Urbanspoon…
Its $29 for all you can eat, what would you expect I guess?

  • I bought these last time, it was oooookay, not great buy ok.

  • This is around the corner from me. Been there twice. It is truly terrible. It's not typical yum cha. Hu tongs on commercial road is 1000000 times better. Don't be stingy and go there. It's not that much more expensive. I warned you!
