is anyone using this? how is it comparing to TPG?

  • +1

ISn't this their standard ADSL package?

  • +1

Powered by AAPT logo proudly displayed in top right corner. Not sure if I would be drawing attention to this fact.

  • Powered by AAPT - is that means you can't use the current Telstra landline?

    • Nope. Just need ADSL enabled exchange.

      • +1

Is that right, so I'm on a Telstra-only exchange and I can still get one of these AAPT powered plans?

It accepts my phone number so I suppose I can, I just smell a rat because why are they the only ISP in the country who can do this sort of deal. Hmmmm…

        • My thoughts exactly, if it's too good to be true….

        • +1

Nope, very true, I am using it and many others. Check whirlpool for more info.

        • Ok thanks for the clarification

  • +7

    adsl2+ + line rental = $57

I'll stay with TPG for now.

    • Telstra Homeline Budget is $23/month … so you could get it for as low as $29+$23 = $52 / month

      • This from the Telstra T&Cs for Homeline Budget:
"you must not take up a broadband service with another provider where that
        provider uses line sharing technology."

My understanding of that is that unless your ISP uses THEIR OWN DSLAM, You can NOT use this plan for your landline. It's reserved only to BigPond customers.

Can anyone please confirm or deny this? Am I correct in my understanding?

        • Hi, the bottom line is that you can order Homeline budget with Telstra and use this service, i am doing it and many others if you check on whirlpool.

  • I'd rather use Clubtelco if in local zone ($25/month), and more importantly there's no contract.

    • +3

actually is not $25/mth..you have to pay for membership fee $50. so it is come up to almost $30/mth

      • 100% correct.

However, if you are in ClubTelco's 'LOCAL' zone (i.e. they have their own DSLAM installed at your local phone exchange), this still remains, based on our research, the BEST unlimited ADSL2+ deal in Australia!

  • Previous discussion @$20/mth http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/84850

Saving $29/mth after leaving TPG pays for Kogan Mobile. Double Unlimited for under $50/mth

  • How come when i used my TPG home phone number to check the availability but cand find any?

    • TPG home phone number using VOIP, not installed on your place but at the exchange, that's why the can do it so cheap.

  • +9
    • Thanks for the info, didn't know this. Will port out another mobile number and maintain as lowest balance as possible for voip only.

  • +1

Pure speculation & mad panic by some Whirlpoolian, as apparently Pennytel's parent company HiTech telecom is in liquidation.

  • +1

    Wasn't AAPT absorbed by iiNet?

    • Yeah pretty certain of it. From wikipedia:
"In late July 2010, iiNet agreed to purchase AAPT's consumer operations for $60 million"

  • can someone chime in with their experience with PennyTel? they offer some really enticing mobile/phone deals in addition to this broadband deal.

    • +4

Diabolically bad service, like torture to deal with, WAY worse than even tiger (FORMER voip and mobile customer)

  • +4

from a previous PennyTel VoIP customer, their service was awful.

    • I have been using their VOIP and has been really good except some issues with billing initially which meant I couldn't use VOIP for sometime.

    • +1. they are horrendous. I had nothing but problems with my mobile service from connection to service to porting out.

Their VOIP has been pretty solid for me but when there was a problem their customer service is definitely one of the worst I have experienced.

  • Am on fibre at 100MB speed, 'unlimited' could mean a lot of downloading..

  • I am with them and have been since January, initially it was a nightmare as they had backhaul issues with Telstra exchanges and it took them a while to fix that. Since April my connection has been as good as TPG which I had for 5 years. I am very happy with these guys and only paying $39 per month for unlimited access compared to $79 with TPG for 300GB.

I am on the old plan hence paying $39 and not $29 and if I want to change I have to ask for a new connection and absorb some more costs which is not worth it.

A little disingenuous comparing PennyTel to a TPG plan that no longer exists, isn't it?

TPG is $59 including line rental for unlimited ADSL2+ and it doesn't require a 24 month contract either. Including line rental, you're actually paying more for your Pennytel service than if you just changed TPG plans.

Comparing Apples-to-Apples, TPG is $2 more expensive than Pennytel's new plan…

      ..but they're also not bankrupt.

      • Yup, if I were you I would reverse that judgement because you simply don't know what you are talking about :) I am on Telstra exchange meaning OFF NET in TPG and every other providers vocabulary library. So if you are an OFF NET customer you pay a lot more than where a provider has its own DSLAM. But with Pennytell that is not the case they don't classify customers offnet or onnet and everyone pays the same amount.

        • Apologies for not realising you are actually off-net — presuming it is valid for off-net, $29.99 is actually an amazing deal.

…but it also illustrates why PennyTel is going under, considering Telstra Wholesale charge between $25 (metro) and $30 (regional) for the port alone. $5 for service, backhaul, network infrastructure, maintenance and customer service is ridiculously unsustainable.

        • +2

So just to clarify, you're whinging because Nadan was getting a crappy deal, now you're whinging because he gets a -fantastic- deal?

Not really seeing the point of the down vote at this point in time…

  • +5

Worst service I have EVER come across - its like they WANT to p you off, even tho they just have no idea what they are doing and nobody you can contact can actually fix anything at all. Used to have voip and mobile with them - never ever will i deal with them again - if they became a monopoly i would go without a phone

  • BTW, there is no after hours support, so if you have a fault with your service you have to wait until business hours. For people on Telstra exchange I think the savings is worth it.

    • Why do you say that; "For people on Telstra exchange I think the savings is worth it."?

      • +1

I should have said people on Telstra DSLAM where other providers don't have their equipment and have to rent a port from Telstra for a lot of money, and that cost gets passed onto the customers. Thus is what internet providers call off net and if you compare must providers site they will have the option on net and off net where the latter costs more for exactly the same service.

  • +3

Horrible experience, stay away from this mob. Poor customer service and dispute resolution, took me 2 months and several emails/phone calls to get my services connected. They also have a hidden disconnection fee of $65. I paid upfront connection fee ($100) for my ADSL connection and went on no contract pay by month plan, when i went to cancel, bang, they slapped disconnection fee. Dodgy company.

  • +1

An extra $100 for no contract. :O

    • And still have to pay a $65 service cancellation fee when you leave :O

  • better than DoDo?

    • +1

MUCH MUCH worse, as unbelievable as that may sound

  • This deal might be worth it for me, i'm on a Telstra only exchange. I'm with ClubTelco paying $60 month, my annual $50 'fee' is due next month anyway, so if I can get this deal for $29 a month and pay the $100 fee for no contract, i'll only initially be $50 out of pocket. But the comments of bad service and the parent company going out of business is a bit disturbing.

    • I was in a similar situation and was considering club Telco and Vettel. Pennytel initially was very frustrating but it has been no better or worse than TPG ever since they fixed their issues.

I ended up on MyNetFone, keep an eye out on their Whirlpool specials page for when they have '50% extra data free' specials (seems to happen pretty often) and they become pretty decent value
      https://www.mynetfone.com.au/whirlpool/Internet/ADSL2-Plans
also keep in mind it is only $55 contract break fee on WP plans so no sense not taking the 2y plan. Seems to be a fair bit quicker than TPG too.

    • (delete) replied to wrong comment

    • there's a $65 cancellation fee, even when not under contract, almost kills it for me now. The $100 "no contract" fee now becomes a $165 fee.

  • +1

It's a good "Deal" so I'm not going to neg, and OzBargain gets it's fair share of shonky businesses, and this is one of them. As the old saying goes, I would not touch them with a 10 foot pole.

I would not be surprised if they embezzled the funds to another company and then liquidated. This is the accusation as what happened to their parent company, who transferred the funds into the PennyTel entity "for no apparent reason" and then liquidated.

    • They will probably end up in the hands of someone else and the prices will double :)

  • What’s Not Included:
You will need a phone line and acompatible ADSL2+ modem in order to use our service.
If you require a phone line, one can be provided for you at an additional $28 a month.
So you still have to pay line rental. You'll be paing $29 + $28 per month.
    https://www.pennytel.com.au/downloads/critical-information-s…
So $29 plan will cost you the same as the $57 plan.

    • +1

Why wouldn't you just go the $69
      ADSL2+, Line
      Rental & Calls

      Unlimited ADSL2+ Internet
      Monthly PSTN phone line rental
Unlimited standard VoIP voice calls to landlines and mobiles in Australia, Canada, China, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the USA
8c per call to more than
      60 other destinations
      No speed shaping
      No installation fee

  • I have been already using pennytel $29 with them for 6 months now. Set up was a complete nightmare - but after that, it has been very stable. Other than that, you still have to pay for line rental, which usually starts from $30 for telstra. I opted for this setup because I needed a clear static-free Telstra phone line for my fax machine which I use a lot of.

    • +2

Why don't you get home line budget line from Telstra for $23.

      • New connections to Homeline Budget can't use ADSL from elsewhere. Breach of T&C.

        • No, wrong, only when there are other provider's DSLAM in the exchange you can't use Homeline budget. I am using it with Pennytel service.

  • Okay this has me crapping my pants as my elderly mother needed unlimited internet for her grandchildren (so I signed her up to this), cheap calls for overseas and to mobiles… I really hope it's not a huge problem, 15 days and counting with still no sign of adsl connection. (they say to allow 21 days)

    • +1

I wouldn't stress, in my experience Telstra are the only ones who are fast on the hook up.
Also people are just speculating about Pennytel legal issues, if anyone cared to look you'd find many other companies in various sordid legal proceedings.

      • Pennytel claims everything will be ready to roll on the 29th of July. Here's hoping!

        • any joy?

  • +1

Added to bookmark will see what happens.

  • Does anyone know if Pennytel shape/throttle? torrents?

  • Have been considering the $69 phone and adsl for the past 2 months.
However I've seen a number of threads regarding congestion and poor service over on whirlpool.
Much better off going with someone else, even Dodo who at least have 24 hour technical support.
