Apparently these plans are new… $20 p/m for unlimited internet. Anybody with experience on AAPT DSLAMS

and also, my friend tells me that these guys are cheapest with international calls. Is this true?

  • I am not sure about broadband plan, but I am with them using VOIP, which allows you to call landline within australia and many international countries with.cheap rates.
For example, I am on freedom plan which costs me $5/pm, enable me to make 150 calls/pm (I think) to many countries, some with mobile calls too.
Check their website for various plans and details.

  • I think I'm on an AAPT DSLAM, on an unlimited internet plan for $39.90/month, but through Veetel, not Pennytel. It's not good. I get ADSL disconnects about 5 times or more a day. Packet loss varies from 2% to 40%, but typically around 5 to 10%, and for a ping test right then it was 24% packet loss (46 packets received, 61 packets transmitted). I suspect the reason for the variance is because they've heavily over-provisioned the network, and the congestion is based on how much everyone else is trying to push down the pipe.

I phoned them once and asked about the packet loss (which at that stage was 5% to 10%), and they just said it was normal, and said they would "reset the connection". It didn't change anything, in fact if anything, it's gotten worse. I was with Internode before, all with the same equipment, and it was fine (but wow it was expensive, at $39 for 30 GB). So I'm going to finish out the last 3 months of my sucky 6 month contract, and then change to someone who can offer reliable Internet. And I imagine the situation could only possibly be worse if you pay half as much ($20 instead of $40). So no, if you want your Internet to be reliable, personally I would not do it. I love a bargain, but flaky Internet is not a bargain, it's just a PITA. If you really did want to try it, under no circumstances would I commit to a contract any longer than 6 months.

    • Its actually likely a Telstra copper problem.

      • Okay. So how should I go about getting it fixed? Is there a specific thing I can do to get Telstra to look at it, or do the ISP need to contact Telstra? Is there something I need to show them to demonstrate the problem? Or should I join BigPond on a short contract and then say "here, it's broken, fix it!". I'm extremely open to suggestions as to how to proceed, but the practical steps as to how to go about that, in a situation where multiple companies are involved, would be most helpful.

        • Post your ADSL line stats, including SNR margin. Find out if its dropping.

Internet disconnects are often is the SNR margin goes below 6db, this indicates a phone line issue.

Check phone line for static with home phone.

If no static, contact your ISP, the complaints section is often good to talk to smarter people.

Basically they should know that if you are getting internet issues then its likely a phone line issue.

  • Just got churned from TPG (3 business days from application). Sync speeds are slightly higher down and a bit slower up. Can't complain for a $29/month saving. Time will tell with congestion and stability.

    • Hi, i'm interest with Pennytel broadband and just like to know how is your experience with them?
      Any drop off? Speed ?
      Thank you

      • Service is no worse than dropouts I had with TPG over the years. It usually works when I want it too. Technical Support rang me when I had some temporary issues which surprised me no end.

Sync speeds of late are up to 18Mbps which is an improvement.

        No regrets.

  • Does this deal require an AAPT DSLAM? I'm region 3, so it's all Telstra gear out here…

  • Aargh, they've jacked up the cost to $29/month. It's not worth jumping from TPG anymore, but I cancelled my TPG service a month ago.
