Ha ha. I love the only fake positive review on Urbarnspoon.

The same poster is the one who posted all the food picks for this restaurant.

    Both other reviews are negative

    • +1

One of the negative reviewers has only one post too - are they fake?

      • +3

possibly, but the positive review is almost certainly fake…

      • +4

unlikely. people are more likely to sign up to urbanspoon to make their first post after a bad experience rather than good.

furthermore, it's the art of urbanspoon interpretation (well, any user reviews really)…it's the combination of many factors:
-the post count (and assessment of their other reviews)
-the post content (whether it's overly glowing or overly negative, whether it demonstrates culinary knowledge and taste or a lack thereof, whether it demonstrates sensibleness or douchebagability)
-other observable factors about the reviewer (ie. their photos (as pointed out by JV), their other activity on urbanspoon or elsewhere)
-how it relates to other reviews on urbanspoon (what is the general consensus? is it consistent or similar to other reviews and are those other reviews: positive or negative, potentially fake or real, knowledgable or not, sensible or douchey)
-how it relates to information from other sources (blog reviews, print media, word of mouth, etc)
-even observable factors about the restaurant itself (other information about the owners, whether they use social media, even the type of restaurant and their intended audience)
        -just a gut feeling.

all of these factors, considered not only in relation to the individual review, but applied to ALL the reviews, gives you a more complete picture of what is more or less likely to be the truth: what is real/fake, what is accurate/inaccurate, what is trusty/untrustworthy, how much value to give an opinion.

in this case there is limited data (which in and of itself raises red flags). but i would surmise this:
-likelihood of the first positive review being fake: in and of itself, 80-90%, but in light of other factors 90-99%
-likelihood of negative reviews being fake: 10-20%
-likelihood of the fourth review being A) fake, or B) someone with no clue about food: 99%
-likelihood of fifth review being fake: in and of itself, 60-80%, but in light of other factors 90-99%
-likelihood $13 is not good value: 50-70%
        -likelihood $6.50 is a good/reasonable deal: 60-90%
-likelihood the people running this restaurant should focus on improving their food/value proposition instead of trying to abuse social media: 99%.

but that is just my (educated) guess…take it with a grain of msg.

caprimulgus, judging by this response, it's 122% likely you work in the insurance industry.

        • -1

aha, not quite…but there's a 75% chance i would have been, if i hadn't been given false information by a uni admissions person (who told me i couldn't do actuarial studies within my double degree)!

  • they're all served on styrofoam?! is that true?

  • worth a try i guess

    Is it Japanese-Japanese restaurant or a Chinese-Japanese?

    • East meets East fusion ?

  • 5 items on the whole menu? http://www.urbanspoon.com/cities/71-melbourne/restaurants/17…
When does this offer expire tekorling? I'm going to be nearby on Tuesday 16th July for a conference.

    • Umm…no. Urbanspoon only has menu items that are uploaded as photos by its users.

For 50% off it's worth judging for yourself

  • +3

Yeah there are plenty of fake Japanese restaurants around.
Makes a huge difference in quality and pisses off real Japanese people, no doubt. Saw this Japanese businessman absolutely hanging it on the chef in a Korean "Japanese" restaurant in Brunswick.
Abused the crap out of him. "Baka this, Baka that"

    • +1

I've lived in Japan for years. I absolutely hate fake Japanese restaurants and refuse to go to them. Pisses off a lot of my friends that just want something to eat.

The best sushi shop in Brisbane is Korean (the Love Roll on Adelaide Street). There is a Japanese sushi shop inside the Myer food court, but they dont get as much traffic, ergo the sushi does not move out the door as quickly, ergo it is not as fresh.

If it makes you feel any better, most of the Japanese restaurants with Japanese staff are owned by Taiwanese people anyway.

      • Maybe in brisbane.

In melbourne if its a Japanese establishment with full complement of japanese staff then it'll most likely be japanese owners.

You can tell when you enter a place not owned by japanese or koreans of japanese nationality.

        • Mate, most of the wait staff will probably be on working holiday visas and probably didn't even work in a restaurant before. The chef will be on a temporary visa. The fact is that you will need to rely on Chinese suppliers anyway for most of your produce. my wife is Japanese and eats noodles regularly from a noodle shop that is Japanese staffed but owned by some bloke from Singapore. The fact is that its the Chinese that have the money to play around with these days. Plus Japanese people have lost their appetite for overseas assets and are deleveraging as fast as possible - look what is happening to the yen as a consequence.

Real or not real doesnt really matter to me. If a Korean can cook nice Japanese food then why not. It's better than a real Japanese who cooks craps right?

    • +1

Well its a bit like playing the flute- Easy
Just blow in one end and move your fingers up and down. Nothing to it, right?

      Its all in the subtlety.
If the staff have no reference point like ohhh say, a lifetime of eating Japanese food and being Japanese, they will instinctively understand subtleties that will not be apparent or even visible to non-Japanese. The food and culture are naturally intertwined. Its a matter of pride and identity too.

Bit different from some numb-nuts cashing in and "doing" Japanese.
And more simply put: it never tastes the same.

      • There are plenty of Zainichi Koreans working in Japanese restaurants, in Japan. Don't worry though, most of them speak Japanese well enough to put your hakujin mind at rest that you are enjoying an authentic cultural experience. The rest of us will eat the sushi and simply not care.

Funnily enough, with the hipsters buying into the "Korean wave" (gangnam style, Samsung etc) I guess their next complaint will be that there are Japanese people working at Korean restaurants.

        • +2

I love food. Simple as that. I have lived in Japan and as a consequence love Japanese food amongst many others cuisines. I love Korean food too.
I'm sure that Zainichi Koreans would do an excellent job with Japanese food as people living some or all of their lives in Japan. That's a really silly misappropriation of the point as I was describing the common occurrence in Australia of buying "Japanese" food from people with obviously no understanding of Japanese food resulting in completely the wrong taste.
I really couldn't give a stuff about hipsters or Hakujin or anything like that but it shits me to see really dodgy slops passed of as Japanese food. Some of it so off-base that its barely recognizable taste and/or (often) freshness. It shits me further to see non-Japanese decorate their stores in Japanesey looking paraphernalia.
It annoys me because it is a con.

        • +2

+1 with King. Usually Chinese owners passing it off as authentic Japanese here in Melbourne.
People love Chinese food and Korean food, so make what you know instead of capitalising on the higher priced nature of Japanese cuisine.

        • -1

Is it a con if the guy cooking my pizza isn't Italian or the guy carving kebabs isn't Turkish? If you like food then make your decisions on merit rather than the nationality of the person doing the cooking.

  • +3

there are many other items on the menu apart from the pictures on urbanspoon. our website is on the way. apologies for that. and yes, it is truly a Japanese establishment. bento boxes are pretty good value!

    • Do we just mention 'The 50% off deal stated on OzBargain" to the person behind the counter?

  • Here is the images of Japanese Bento box from google.

Urbanspoon need a bit more artistic touch.

You seem to know a lot about the restaurant tekorling given you posted on Whirlpool that you only "discovered" the place recently:

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=738361&p=…

  • +1

Gotta give credit for the attempts to promote one's business - i realise its tough competition out there especially in the first year of opening but what we (the consumers) don't like are misleading tactics and shill comments.

Let the customer service, food and value speak for themselves!

  • Hi tekorling, so If I walk in with 30 people and mention Ozbargain I get 50% off my entire lunch bill?

This is a legitimate question, I guess I should also ask if your restaurant can accomodate such large groups?
    thanks

  • Does this deal exp 31/7??

  • korean sushi is known as kimbap..so its not sushi, its kimbap.
if ur an avid lover of japanese or even korean food you should know the difference..duh =_=
