I purchased one of these last time they were on sale at 9289. The WD10EADS is the newer model with more RAM on board and less platters than the WD10EACS. Not sure of the shipping costs to all regions as I live close by and do a pick up. There is a Limit of 1 per customer but they did say that I could get my friends / wife etc to also buy one each.

Unfortunately sold out and the next best price on staticice/shopbot is Mwave and others at $275…
Obviously you didn't read what was said, we are talking about the 1.5TB drive with only 3 platters
called them this afternoon and they said more is coming on Monday afternoon, so not sold out. will be picking mine up on Monday or Tuesday
Good stuff, great value for money and good for an external drive, it's the same as the 2TB drive except with 3 instead of 4 platters at 500GB each = KIKAZ
EDIT: they were open on saturday afternoon? new ones coming will be at same price? I notice that they say you have to order via website first (credit card surcharge) and pay for pick-up as well…
@Icy: yes they were open on saturday but got more stock in on Monday. just picked mine up this afternoon (Tuesday), and yeah you do have to order online 1st so they can put it on hold for you (theres an option in the payment page that says pick up which means you pay when you pick it up. upon pick up you can pay by cash or eftpos (theres is a 3% credit card surcharge but you can use saving account for no surchage) also they only hold it for you for 3 days, without payment, max)
wanted to also get the 4GB RAM they had on special too (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/10858) but i didnt order it online so they didnt have any on hold for me and said more stock is expected to come in in a few days. so might order online as its free delivery anyways :P (thats if they have more coming in before special runs out)
@constantly L8: I called them asking about wd 1.5tb, they barely pick-up the phone, guy told me we have plenty and same price online as website and don't need to book, just come and then he hung up before I could say anything more, I was there and they told me still no stock as per the website and that the other guy may be confused due to seagate 1.5tb drives, waste of time really, so I dunno who you saw or how you ordered online when it is consistently out of stock…
Apparently OW has the same drive too http://www.officeworks.com.au/technology/data-storage-record…
There's two versions of the WD Caviar Green, the one listed on OW doesn't say, but the one listed here is the newer and should be more reliable one.
There's actually quite a few more.
WD10EADS with 32MB cache, 3 platters
WD10EACS with 16MB cache, 3 OR 4 platters
WD10EAVS with 8MB cache, 3 platters
I don't think any of them have had reliability issues, it's just that fewer platters reduce power consumption.
Good price, was waiting on this one to come back.
A word on shipping costs: Try a couple of different postcodes in your area. I found that sending the item to a friend in a close by postcode cost $11 where as shipping direct to me would have been $19. The mate doesn't mind and we are much more likely to purchase more in the future from 9289 now we have access to cheaper delivery.
Free delivery atm with 9289.com.au
What? Where? How?
The promotional banner on the website says 'free delivery Australia wide' but on checkout it added $11.00 for me.
Can someone please check if this is an error? May be I will email their support.
The way I read it the 'free felivery' on that banner only applies to the Transcend DDR2 4GB Kit (deal posted here http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/10858). Bought one of these hard drives and was also charged the $11 shipping as per my post above.
in sydney CBD area delivery is $8 :P, but im still gonna go pick it up, love riding me motorcycle
bought one just now, picking it up in 5 minutes.
Just bought one, damn credit card $5 surcharge. Didn't notice it till the last second. :( Ended up being $155
For people wondering, it's a second gen SATA, with a 32Mb Cache, 7200rpm.
Excellent deal.
These are WD Caviar Green, running at 5400rpm; Caviar Blue and Caviar Black are the 7200rpm models.
the site states they are 7,200rpm drives.
The 4 platter WD10EACS utilises something Western Digital marketed as "Intellipower" with an insinuation that the drive somehow changed/adapted RPM depending on how hard it was being used. This was found to be incorrect though and it was in fact just a 5400rpm drive.
My guess is that the main reason Western Digital made the follow up model (ie. WD10EADS) 7200rpm is because they copped a lot of flak for making their initial 'Green Power' models 5400rpm. This was also one of the reasons that I waited for a WD10EADS at this cheap price rather than getting another WD10EACS.
Must be said though that even the 5400RPM WD10EACS beat a lot of the smaller 7200rpm drives in throughput. This also means that it is more than fast enough to handle any external storage needs, be they via USB2 or Firewire 800.
Yeah okay.
So BOTTOM LINE this IS INDEED a 7200rpm drive.
Does anyone know how long shipping is meant to take from 9289? I ordered the LG DVDs on Sunday and they are still not here.
usually within a few business days. Don't worry though, it should arrive monday.
ok, thanks.
What's a nice external case to put this hdd into? I need usb2 and esata and case must be black. :)
Coolermast X-Craft 350, especially the RX-3SB version as it has in inbuilt hub as well so you can daisy chain your external drives if you so choose.
Available in black here however from experience be sure to check stock levels before ordering with any supplier. The USB models are everywhere however I have found the ESATA models harder to source sometimes.
Hey thanks, I like that one.
It looks like MSY have them too and there's one 5 min away from me.
http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=RX-3SB&spos…Welcome :-) Half your luck living that close to MSY, never got one of these models (they are the top of the line) for under $50.
I bought these drives from MSY over 2 months ago. Nothing new.
When everyone was selling the 16MB cache one I went into MSY Ultimo and bought two WD10EADS (32MB Cache) version for $155.
But great price
I still prefer to get Hard disk IN STORE, not by post.
Over the last 4 years, I bought 4x320Gb and 2x500Gb. All WD drives.
I run WD extended diagnostic overnight in two of my computers right after I bought them. Two out of six have problem. I have to print out the report and swap them the next day. But once the hard drives passed the diagnostic, they are very reliable.
If they are posted here, it will be hard to get it exchanged within a week as there will be lots of explanation to do and postage to be paid again.
I have 2 x 320gb WD hdds which are nearly full.
Is it safe to run that utility on my drives when they are so full?
Some of the tests in the Western Digital diagnostics you can but others you can't. Don't think there would be any problem with running the 'quick' diagnostics test which only takes a few minutes. However you don't want to write 0's to the entire drive ;-)
Generally try to not fill any hard drive up more than 90% so as to still leave room for the self correcting mechanisms to fully work. Not that anything necessarily goes wrong if you fill over 90% of course but better to err on the side of caution.
In that case, I think I'll wait until I do a backup when I get the 1 TB drive before running the diagnostics on the 2 x 320gb.
There's less than 10gb space left on each one. Even when I recently did a defrag, the drives seemed to be working harder than usual.thanks.
I can confirm that OW sell the old ones.
Still thinking whether to buy this or go for the Elements 1TB as its $11 postage to Melb for me.keep thinking.
Its sold out.Sadly i missed out as well
~~~Btw rkn officeworks would still do a pricematch as its sold out?
From what I've read in other discussions OW usually ring up to make sure the item is actually in stock at the shop they are price matching don't they?
The cache size does mater. 32Mb version of 1TB took about 3hr10mins to finish extended diagnostic and 16Mb version took 4hr30mins. So, I guess the 8Mb version selling in OW might take even longer.
I have also tested on the writing speed. 32Mb version can write in 72MB/s constantly. 16Mb version is writing the same files at 60MB/s. Not sure about the 8Mb version.
wait a minute. Below is the link to the one im thinking about getting. Are you SURE that has a 8ms buffer. I want a 32ms buffer :(
http://www.officeworks.com.au/technology/data-storage-record…
I went to OW but couldn't find out whether or not WD10EADS. How do we find out about this from the box?
According to http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/115…, it might be 32Mb.
yeh i saw that too ><
im gonna go to officeworks and confirm what it is. I dont mind paying 170 for 1tb as long as its the WD10EADS 32ms buffer >><<
Hopefully it is otherwise im coming straight back home
If you don't mind paying $170 for the WD10EADS, PLE and Austin are selling it for $164 in Perth.
lol i have the worst luck seriously . This site on staticice, itsky, is selling it for 138+ 10 shipping = 141 after price match. But my printer ran out of pages and i cant print the deal lol ~~
Looks like its gonna have to be 170. I dont want to buy from itsky (bad feedback on whirlpool). MSY has it for 155, but stock is probably finished.
PS: I dont live in perth so those stores are useless to me >><< you cant pricematch interstate.
I bought one from MSY they only have WD10EAVS with 8MB cache.
ok do not go to officeworks.
they have WD10EACS.
i just wasted 2 hours…………….. so annoyed
lol if you spent 2 mins reading a few posts above of mine then you woudn't have wasted 2 hrs.
Nice price. I don't need any more 1TB drives unfortunately but if I did this would be the cheapest price I'd have bought one for. I'm moving up to the 1.5TB drives next, WD have 1.5TB out for $209 now! http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=1.5tb+wd&spos=1
