  • forgot to mention, last week the same dates i wanted were 570 return for 2 so works out to be 42$ cheaper…also its cheaper to book it as return as when i tested buying one way there and one way back its $106.5 instead of $105 so for convenience just book it return.

it's better to put $ in front of the price so that it turns in RED color.

cool, that's neat, thank you :)

    Good jobe tarulov3.

Looks great for a snow trip to Japan. Cheers!

THANKS! booked my ticket to Korea in JAN to MAR
    for $527 inc. meals

I usually paid ~$1700 with Korean Air

    • Wow, that's cheap. Very tempting….never been to Korea before

    • China Eastern or China Southern will cost around $800 to Korea. So very good deal indeed

  • thanks op, was waiting for one of these

  • There are airport charges and fees that are like $400AUD for couple per trip. Is this expected/normal or am I doing something wrong?

  • nothing in January for Mel - Kul unless i'm not looking hard enough!

    • Same for Gold Coast - KUL..

  • +1

Prices are for no baggage, seat fee or food.

So add that on as well.

    Still cheap as :)

    • got baggage with mine..

  • Best to pay with PayPal with your linked credit card, which saves you on the cc surcharges with flights originating out of Aus. :)

    • does that really work? i just booked with the previous sales and used my credit card because it gives me free travel insurance. i figured i should just cop the $64 processing fee (for 2 people) but i on the payment page that the paypal account had to be linked to a bank so i didn't bother trying

    • other best way to pay is in MYR with a 28degrees (or similar low fx transaction fee) card.
I have found paying in MYR as opposed to AUD is better by 3-5%, but YMMV.

  • damn it! just booked yesterday because i thought i would miss out on a great deal :(

  • Silly question, but how do I go about booking the connecting/through flights? Looking at Mel —> KL —> Bangkok. Ta

  • Just put in Melb in Departing and Bangkok in destination.

But if you wish to stay in KL in either direction the flight in the direction you wish to stay in KL need to be booked separately eg Melb- KL KL - Bangkok etc

    • Looks like I've missed out then. Showing $400+, not the ~$200 quoted in the post :<

  • I have found paying in MYR as opposed to AUD is better by 3-5%, but YMMV.

By the time you pay the currency conversion & your credit card issuer's surcharge of paying foreign currency, would it the WORSE OFF instead of better off? Unless you have already got a MYR credit card and you have that currency to pay your card :)

    • +1

that's why you use a 28 degrees card

    • no. BETTER OFF.
try for yourself. select MYR v AUD currency for the same flight.
do a translate on the MYR amount and you'll see it is less than AUD amount.

28degress card has no additional fx transaction fees - just applies mastercard's rate.

      random example:
KUL to MEL 11 Feb 2014, no bags etc, AUD$106.50
KUL to MEL 11 Feb 2014, no bags etc, MYR$299

Using mastercard currency conversion tool, MYR299 = A$101.70 AUD.

obviously a simple example, and, as I said, your mileage may vary.

  • A note of caution for those who do not like long transit times in LCCT Kuala Lumpur: Fly-thru FLights that I checked Syd - Bkk only give option of several hours transit. Whereas bookings before 1 January give options of better connections and shorter transit times. To me, Not worth the discount!

    • i had this on (Portable)Firefox (refer the first reply on previous 2for1 AirAsia deal), then switched to (Portable)Chrome, no problem.

In my experience in booking airasia last year (booked to syd-kl-bangkok (fly through), bangkok to hcmc, hcmc to kl and kl to syd) and syd to kl and kl to sydney now:

The quoted price given is usually catered for those from the country of departure. Booking a flight leaving Australia will quote an "australian" price in AUD. Changing the currency option simply converts the quoted Australian price to whatever currency is chosen. Hence why the quoted Australian price is usually a simply whole number and any other currency usually with decimals. This rule applies when booking both one-way and return flights. A return flight Syd to KL will yeild Australian "prices" BOTH ways. This goes the same with flights leaving other countries such as malaysia (which gives you a quoted price in ringitts), thailand (quoted price in baht), vietnam( quoted prices in USD).

So keeping this in mind, buying a return flight Syd to Kl gives you quoted prices in AUD for each way, but if you buy a single Sydney to KL and a single KL to Sydney you actually get a price going there catered for australian market and the other way catered for Malaysians which is generally cheaper. So it is actually cheaper to book these two legs separately. If you lived in Malaysia and wanted a return flight kl to Syd, it would be cheaper or the same to book a return/single flight as the quoted price will be Malaysian prices.

To maximise saving use a credit card with no international fees (such as 28 degrees or citibank) which booking flights that are noto in australian dollars. Keeping the default currency that the quote is used in generally minimises conversion rates the site uses before you actually get charged.

In regards to fly through, the benefit is that you do not need to recheck in your baggage and you have a combined itinerary of the two flights. On the down side you actually may not get the best price for each leg as it may not be feasible to do so. For example, Kl to Sydney normally has two flights with the morning 9am flight generally a lot cheaper than the evening flight. Any connecting flights to KL to fly home to sydney is not possible with the morning flight as most flights entering KL from any other asian country do not arrive earlier than 9am. So the fly through flight will only incorporate the evening (more expensive) KL to sydney flight when finding a fly through option. The only other option to utilise the morning cheaper flight is to enter KL the day before (which may negate the savings you get from the morning flight).

Anyway I hope this all made sense. For those living in Sydney and want to fly to Kl to X, I booked separately Sydney to Kl flying in mid January 2014 with 30kg and a meal for $221 (quoted and charged in AUD) and KL to sydney in mid Feb 2014 with 30kg and a meal for 415 myr (quoted and charged in myr which is ~$140). Worked out to be about $360 return. The only savings I had from booking separately was the second leg as Kl-syd was about 20 to 30 dollars cheaper when using "Malaysian quote".

Next thing I am doing is waiting for is a KL to Asia sale, and i will book my legs outbound and inbound from and to KL.

Oh and again when booking from Sydney, pay by cc via paypal via "direct deposit" to save on the cc processing fee and use a 28 degrees or citibank card when paying in foreign currency.

    Hope this all helps!

    • mrdk, when you pay with 28 Deg card are you also having to pay the credit card booking fee? When paying in AUD option, I was able to use paypal and avoid the ~16$ fee, which I assume is probably greater saving than from the 'alternate currency' hack.

I am also holding off on my KL - asia flights :)

NB: just saw your last paragraph :S I couldn't get the paypal option when booking in MYR or other currencies - only AUD.

    • Good work MRDK. It can mean possibly longer transit times in LCCT Kuala Lumpur, but frequent travellers could consider lounge access in LCCT (not great lounges, but better than the cattle shed.) 3 options that I know of for cheap access:- 1. you can buy 10 Priority Pass lounge (worldwide) entries on Priority Pass (search for a 20% off membership = $A199) 2. Buy Plaza Premium Lounge Pass (LCCT and KLIA only) = $US135 for 5 visits but they gave me my initial entry for free = 6, or Diners Club card giveslounge entry worldwide (I think $A135 p.a. to join) At LCCT if you have several hours, especially in the late evening when there is low number of passengers at Immigration, go through immigration even if you have a fly-thru flight, and use the land-side lounge - much better than the air-side lounge. If you have a fly-thru, no need to do transit checkin if going land-side, just go straight out through immigration and go to a special desk to revalidate your onward journey boarding pass. Then go to the land-side lounge.
