Yeah, air asia doesn't fly direct to bangkok. You can get to 37 other international airports from KL with air asia though:

BKK is only $44, so you could get MEL->BKK for $190 + 44 = $234 (and return for double that) which is pretty insanely good. Though personally I'd fly to krabi for $24 and head to one of the southern Thai island :)

Jetstar has responded with their own sale now, MEL->BKK for $249. Crazyness.
Can get return Melb-Bangkok for $468. And I just paid $900 with British Airways from Sydney.
