      the lens is great!

I did a lot of research on lenses back in the day when I got a k-x. Consensus was this lens was the best you could get when travelling around.

I had the 17-70 and 55-300 over 4 weeks travel, and only used the 55-300 maybe a couple times at most

      • I've got this lens on my Pentax and it is great! Really good colour and sharpness.

if only they sell the non black one i might consider upgrading my k-x
but some review on k30 only 6.5 out of 10?
    edit:

    Poor video quality
    Very noisy mechanical operation
    No HDMI out
    Poor flash results

      My review of that review:

      Poor video quality

Hardly the primary purpose of a DSLR.

      Very noisy mechanical operation

The body of the review doesn't mention this at all.

      No HDMI out

      Who cares?

      Poor flash results

All onboard flash is more or less terrible.

You really can do better for $750… like the new 18MP Canon SL1 ($799 with kit lens).

You're stupid. The SL1 has a 4 year old sensor with significantly inferior image quality, less manual control, a much smaller viewfinder and no weather sealing.

      2/10, would not read again.
Here's a proper review written by people who understand cameras: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/pentax-k30/pentax-k30A…

      • thanks. agree with all your points, except the hdmi part i think its important nowadays, we can just plug in hdmi cable to show photos on tvs. anyway, when i got more $ might looking to get the k30 in non-black colour hopefully with this price.

        • Do you like your k-x? Only reason I ask is that I tried one for a week with an assortment of manual lenses and didn't like it. I wonder how much better this k30 is.

        • i still like it, only wish it has bigger screen, hdmi and focus on the screen

  • Without much knowledge of K30, I would recommend this as a travel kit.
Do not know how well a K30 does in terms of video, but you definitely won't be disappointed with stills (looking at camera/lens combination).
Again good for starters and travellers.

  • I have Kx, K30 and a Fujifilm X-Pro1.
I use Kx and X-Pro1 with manual lenses and Kx can take a good photo if you get the focus right but X-Pro with its nice electronic viewfinder and fancy sensor is much better.
K30 feels like a solid, quality camera with it rubber casing and the prismatic viewfinder. I probably need better lenses for it as I don't think it performs like a K5 that seems to have quite a following.
Some manual focus lens work better with some cameras and it is a mix and match situation.
The current Fujifilm deal at Hardley Normal is attractive especially if leaving the country

    • Thanks for the info. The k-x I find has problems with focus. Also tried running it using the viewfinder instead of the lcd but it still chews a lot of battery.

  • The ad seems a bit deceptive. It advertises the lens as a Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 DC and lists "Optical Stabilizer" as a feature of the lens. One would assume this is the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 DC OS HSM, which retails for about $450+. However, looking at the photos in the advertisement, it shows the K30 with a Sigma 17-70mm f.28-4.5 DC lens, which is a much cheaper lens. The K30 (and most if not all other Pentax dSLR's) has built in OS, so no idea if the "Optical Stabilizer" they advertise is a feature of the camera or the lens.

I called up Groupon to see if they could clarify which lens it actually is, and they could not tell me. They wouldn't give me the contact details of the merchant either for me to find out which lens it is.

I have the non-HSM version of the lens, and it's a pretty good lens. Very versatile, good value for money.

Bottom line is, if it is the HSM lens, this is a very very good deal (and I would be jumping on it too). If it's not, it's sort of a good deal.

    • I got a reply from them. It says it is the SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC LENS. F2.8-4 and not 4.5 like what you said?

  • K-30 is designed to focus on its core function as a camera rather than taking videos, connectivity, size, looks etc.

I would choose it over other cameras in the pricing range which try to do 'a bit of everything' yet are good at none.

  • the ad has a lot mistakes, like 7 fps, 80-51200 ISO, 1/8000shuter speed, and also the sigma lens(the pic doesnot match the specs). it seems groupon does not know anything about this camera kit.

  • Anyone buying this package? Just wondering if the lens is 17-70mm 2.8-4 or 2.8-4.5 . And is it macro? Ta.
