Game of Thrones Season 3 Season Pass on iTunes - $33.99 HD or $28.99 SD

20

Not exactly sure if this is a huge bargain, but it seemed like a decent price to me for this current season with the convenience of playing through itunes / apple TV.
(oddly enough it's cheaper than the first season).

works out to be around $27 for HD if you regularly buy itunes cards at 20% off.

  • Going to suck when Season 4 happens.
Wont be able to watch through iTunes or the like in Australia until AFTER the full season has screened on Foxtel

    http://delimiter.com.au/2013/05/14/foxtel-locks-up-game-of-t…

    • edit - doh didn't realise they were targetting the remaining eps :/

  • +1

Based on the fact that the season only has a couple of episodes left and now due to the exclusive Foxtel deal, the episodes will be quite delayed from the US broadcast, I don't think it's much of deal.

It is however the cheapest legal way of watching it, so each to their own.

edit: Shrudding at the comment "convenience of playing through itunes / apple TV."

I'd rather buy it on blu-ray. No DRM.

    • +7

I'm pretty sure Blu-ray has plenty of DRM.

      • -3

No it doesn't it's not locked behind an online account and can be played on any blu-ray player in the world. Season 2 on blu-ray only set me back $43 AUD delivered from Amazon and this is the blu-ray, DVD and digital copy pack.

        • Like your definition of DRM :-P

        • +2

Apart from all the ones that have region locking enabled and are a different region to your discs.

Having said that, Blu-Ray is significantly better quality than anything off iTunes.

    • +5

Yeah, except for HDCP, AACS and BD+.

But anyways, BOO APPLE! DRM! etc.

      • +1

Yeah iTunes DRM sux. I was once locked out of my entire iTunes video collection for a few months because the stupid DRM mistook a few BIOS updates for new computers. You only get to deauthorise all computers in the account once a year.

        • +1

          All DRM sucks…
          Some more than others

  • Lol they charge more for the HD version as opposed to a SD version?

Nice move stopping itunes from getting the shows quickly. Just increases the piracy

  • +2

    Media companies are daft.

Will I sign a contract for Pay TV full of crap I don't want? No.
Would I pay for Game of Thrones? Yes.
Will I still pay if doing so is both less convenient and has much slower delivery? No.

  • Not a bargain: this was the price from the start of the season.

We purchased it rather than obtain it via other means. If S04 isn't going to be on iTunes, they can expect people to find these other means rather than paying for it. Seems like a silly move to me.

    • fair enough, I wasn't sure as I only stumbled upon it today…
happy for it to be removed if need be.

  • re the above news - only going to increase pirated downloads of the show. No one is going to wait 10+ weeks for the season. Surprised HBO etc do not see that coming.

    • They do, but they have to make Foxtel happy.

No matter how bad the situation gets Foxtel is going to benefit in at least a small way.

      • +1

        Serious a 10+ week wait?.

Stuff iTunes and Foxtel. You could buy the blu-ray from Amazon before you ever see the series on iTunes AU.

        • Well no.

The Blu-Ray is likely going to be available early next year.

Foxtel are fine with it being available on iTunes in three weeks.

        • True. But i'd rather have the true full HD exprience on blu-ray rather than iTunes cut down version of HD.

Season 4 hasn't even started showing yet so can't see that being out until early next year.

        • +1

          I'm talking about Season 3

The same thing will happen with Season 4.

Begins March 2014, ends June 2014.

          Available on iTunes June 2014

          Bluray February 2015.

        • -1

Season 3 for blu-ray is already on pre-order on Amazon and should be out within a few months well before early next year. Amazon US or UK is not bound to Foxtels delaying crap.

        • What is your source for Season 3 bluray release date?

Not saying your wrong, but my dates mentioned are for previous bluray releases which would be more accurate then having no source.

        • Is on blu-ray pre-order on Amazon with no current release date yet but that would be due to change any day now. But knowing the 9th and 10th episodes of season 3 is due to show in the US early next month and that would be one of the last episodes of the season i can see the blu-ray being released in the US within the next 2 months. Season 2 was only 11 episodes and season 1 was 10. The factory would be producing the blu-ray box sets right now.

Actually going by tv.com episode guides the last episode of season 2 showed in the US on 6th March 2013 and the season 2 blu-ray was released on Amazon US on 19th February 2013. That blu-ray was actually released over 2 weeks before the season finished airing on TV.

        • +1

So in other words you are pulling it from thin air?

Its a nice guess you have there… but its still a guess.

Amazon has been known to have preorder items up many many months before release.

The page would mention a release date if actually knew they were getting stock at some point, they are just assuming.

        • -3

Yeah and Amazon has had season 3 blu-ray up for pre-order for like about 2 months so far. Any way you will see when Amazon updates the release date it won't be any where as far as early next year. As i said they would have long since finished filming the series and they'll be making the blu-ray discs and box sets in the factory right now ready for release in the coming weeks.

Just look at the history of the season 1 and 2 blu-ray box sets released before the season even completely finishes airing on TV. That's in the US though. But you can buy the blu-ray from Amazon US having it shipped over in your hands in a weeks time before you'd get to watch the season on iTunes AU thanks to Foxtel and their delaying tactics.

        • How can you spout this bullshit all the time? The seasons are produced on DVD and BluRay and released the early months of the next year. Everyone knows this you're not fooling anyone.

        • Well we'll wait and enjoy Game of Thrones S3 when it's out.

Prepare to be negged. Welcome to Neggsville. Population: You.

      • Strange, the last time I criticised piracy I got negged. I guess it must depend on what series/movie it is?

    • +1

You are either the best troll or the worst person.

      Either way, well done.

    • That's true. Hell, why bother paying for anything? Just shoplift whatever you want.

      Piracy isn't a bargain, it's illegal theft.

      • +2

        You wouldn't download a car

        • The real fun stuff will start when 3D printers really kick in.

          I absolutely would download a Ferrari…

        • sure, if you want it to take 16 years to build, and then be made out of the weakest possible materials.

        • +1

You're right, 3D printers will never catch on because they are currently (and never will) be good enough.

And what moron would want to carry a huge phone with only enough charge for a couple of hours around. Better give up on mobile phones and stick to land lines….

        • Such a printer if and when it exists will cost many times more than a Ferrari…

        • I absolutely would, if I could.

      • Which i will get away for :)

    • +2

      I agree.

Game of Thrones is one of the only shows that deserve to be pirated by Australians.

Our only choice to watch it is to pay $72 a month for it, how is that worth it?

That puts Season 3 at about $216, $21.60 per episode…

I wish Foxtel would go bankrupt.

*Prices just retrieved from Foxtel's website using the minimum package and adding the showcase channel.

      • Gerry Harvey logic:

the itunes option is only cheaper because they don't pay tax
        http://www.policymic.com/articles/7868/apple-icheat-how-the-…

"I wish Foxtel would go bankrupt."

not likely when the formula is:

subscription rate = (desired profit - actual operating cost)/(number of subscribers)

        • Yes and No…

Once their subscribers reach a certain point its not worth bidding for certain sports, paying for fast tracked tv shows etc.

All its going to take is something like Netflix in Australia or another way for mums and dads to watch TV and they are going to go downhill.

    • Whether or not you agree with torrenting the series, it's not a reason to neg the deal.

    • I download them illegally knowing I'll be buying the blu-ray version when it's released. Sue me.

  • Not a bargain. The only reason I bought it last week is because I still have over $200 iTunes store credit to spend. After bought it, only to find out I cannot play the shows on my TV from external hard drive because of it arse-tight DRM protection, I have to watch it on my PC monitor with Quicktime player. Google search so far showing there are programs that can bypass iTunes DRM and convert to other video format, but that also means I have to pay more money for those converting programs. I don't own Apple TV or iPad to watch these shows and I am not going to buy them in the near future anyway. Not happy at all, and won't be buying movies or TV shows from iTunes ever again :(

P.S. Another bad for Season 3 is the lack of caption (subtitle), which apparently Season 1 & 2 have.

    • Buy a HDMI cable.
Plug HDMI cable into laptop, desktop, etc.
      Press play.

(optional) bitch on internet using said laptop/desktop/etc

    • If you want to play the episodes on your TV you'll need to go out and buy an Apple TV. Yes it's apple's own HD set top box device designed to playback the iTunes DRM video on a TV.

      http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/computer-ac…

I used to have one. Ended up throwing it out and switched to blu-ray discs with blu-ray player. No DRM locked behind an online account crap.

Itunes and Foxtel, two demons that should be cast in the fires of mount doom

Pffft well enjoy paying for it while i download it hour after it airs!

Its great downloading all my tv shows combine it with a HTPC and you are all set
