  • What is a Gravity Sensor ???

    • +2

It senses when there is a large shift in the g forces and can start recording automatically. Not sure why it wouldnt always be recording..

      • Do you want to record it parked in your garage?

I'd imagine it'd fill up or run out of power long before anything interesting happened!

        • +1

It cycle records. It records for a certain amount of time and then will overwrite the oldest file before opening a new one. Thanks for the reminder though, the g force sensor will start recording should anything happen while parked afaik, ie someone hits your car.

        • +2

^^^ Correct! You dont want it to record while the car is off otherwise it may run out of battery

        • +1

          I was referring to;

Not sure why it wouldnt always be recording..

If it was always recording, it could possibly overwrite something important with black footage of your car parked overnight.

I'm surprised their isn't a decent mobile app for something like this. Put your phone in a docking station w/ a charge cable mounted with the camera facing out and you're done. Android phones even have a 'car' mode, so it could start recording automatically once connected.

        • +1

I guess the trouble is then you don't have your phone on you anymore!

        • @ryang not sure if you've thought it out far enough… but i believe you haven't been looking/researching for a dvr or own one to know what its actually for.

        • Do you want to record it parked in your garage?

I assume it measures acceleration and not gravity. Gravity is dependant only on mass.

If you're travelling at a constant speed, there will be no change in acceleration, thus the gravity sensor should cause it to stop recording… Which is probably not what you want it to do…

        • I believe there are several apps, some which even automatically save it to an external server or the "cloud" in case of police confiscation etc. (Some people are paranoid enough to warrant that, but my main concern is that it would chew threw battery very quickly, you wouldn't be able to use your phone, it could potentially block parts of the windscreen and you'd be at risk of having it stolen if you left it there.

        • +2

I think you are a bit confused there, gravity is actually Independent of mass. Gravity is measured at approximately 9.81ms^-2 and hence is in units of acceleration. People sometimes refer to acceleration as gravity or "g" as it is a more understandable unit of acceleration for everyday use. I believe you also meant a change in velocity NOT acceleration as a change in velocity is acceleration and hence this is what will trigger the camera to turn on. Also I think the rep explained down below as well that it will detect the current from the cigarette lighter when you turn on your car to turn on as well.

        • for those uninitiated, decent built dvrs can be wired to a car battery and has proper voltage cutoffs.

apps and handphones are not DVRs, it's silly to even put them in comparison to DVRs.

        • -2

gravity is actually Independent of mass.

          you are correct there…

I believe you also meant a change in velocity NOT acceleration

Nope. If you are travelling at a constant velocity, there is no change in acceleration…

        • +1

Hehe, To Achieve no change in acceleration, you would have to travel at a constant velocity and also not change direction. even turning slightly to the left would cause you to feel centripetal force - which i assume would be read as achange in accelration.

I'm sure a science buff with debunk my dated physics knowledge :(

        • -6

Regardless, there won't be a change in Gravity…

        • +10

If you can drive at a constant speed without any steering changes for a few minutes i don't think dash cams are required for your roads :)

        • "If you are traveling at a constant velocity, there is no change in acceleration" is incorrect because if you are travelling at a constant velocity, there is no acceleration. BIG difference between change in acceleration which is also refereed to as "jerk" and acceleration.

        • +1

I'm using an old Nokia N8 with a proper dvr app, mounted behind the rearview mirror. For continuos charging I ran a long usb cable around the windshield. When I leave the car I just remove it. Not everybody is up for DIYs but phones can be used.

        • Lvl1pro 1 hour 28 min ago ¶

Well technically it is correct. I agree if you are travelling at a constant velocity then there is no acceleration. As there is no acceleration i.e. acceleration = 0 that also means there is no change in acceleration (or jerk as you correctly put it)

        • The problem with phones is that they lack wide angle lens. Even a cheapie sub $30 dashcam will have wider field of view than a phone camera, but obviously they'll lack video quality if they're too cheap.

        • +4

My garage came with gravity pre-installed.

        • +1

As long as our moon orbits the Earth, gravity will be changing constantly. Just ask the tides.

        • muncan 2 hours 15 min ago new

As long as our moon orbits the Earth, gravity will be changing constantly. Just ask the tides.

Actually that has a minimum effect of it.. Gravity is effected by mass and distance. Earths mass is a heap more than our moon and a lot closer. Therefore is so long as the earth is orbiting our sun gravity is changing.

        • But earth is stable. Gravity change comes mostly from the rotation of the earth under the moon's field. The sun is much less important.

This just turned into a Youtube comments section.

        • Wish if this was available a month back. I could have get rid of the fine from local council monitored by dodgy opportunistic officer.
The entire road was blocked when I entered to it next to school gate. I want to collect my daughter from school. I was still on driving gear and didn't even change gear. But I basically moved to the left side of the road to allow on coming traffic to leave the road without completely blocking the road. I just stayed for couple of seconds in no-stop area until the vehicle in front of me moves and clear the way for me. I don't know what else I could do at that situation. I tried to be better and use the common sense rather than blocking the whole street. In that instance I saw the council van came after me. I moved further and parked when I found a parking spot and walked to school to pick up the kid. The dodgy inspector sent me a fine for $ 140. If I had this camera I could prove that I didn't stop in middle of the road blocking the street and collect the kid as most other parents did and then I didn't park or stopped in wrong place and had no way to move further as my way was blocked. I really need this camera. Never had any issues from thieves yet but the dodgy Council officer proved that they are more dangerous than thieves. I badly need this video camera.

        • You dont need it anymore!

        • I don't think the video would have helped you rmamila. It would have proved you deliberately stopped in a no stopping zone. No stopping is not the same as no parking, hence the different signs.

why dont you search on google before you comment?

      • -6

because I was asking the Rep. who is advertising that feature on their link.

        • +2

looks like jv managed to troll everyone to post offtopic in the comments here.

  • Didn't realize they were so big! That badboy looks like its taking up the whole passenger screen. Shouldn't they be discrete?

    • Check this one.

    • Haha! They are the size of a mobile phone, the picture is just super imposed :)

    • Why is everything a 'badboy' on OB these days?

  • +1

rep…what is the model number of the 1080p $50 device?

And any exclusive deal for ozbargain members? That's the kind of stuff we like and will certainly add the number of 'pluses' on your post :)

    • +1

      Hi Model number is DCO118,

Unfortunately we are selling these at cost.

      • Unfortunately we are selling these at cost.

        why?

        • +2

If you check out our website or ebay store you can see we have a pretty diverse range of products. Unfortunately some products sell and others don't for no particular reason. Having listings which do not generate any sales affects search rankings etc. sooo thats why we are selling them at cost:)

        • thanks…

        • …and others don't for no particular reason.

I'll go out on a limb here and suggest there is…

They look a little bulky, and will partially obstruct my windscreen.
Mind you, when i crash cos i can't see anything, i'll be able to upload the result to www.liveleak.com with all the other Russian dashboard videos.

  • Do you have to turn these things on manually when you get in the car?

    • +2

If you have these plugged into the cigarette lighter, it recognises power and automatically starts recording. It will auto turn off once it recognises there is also no power.

      • Can they record when the car is parked in a parking spot and cigarette lighter power is off. Is there any model which does this with a rechargeable battery power?
When I bought my first brand new car 8 months back, somebody had hit it from the back in the underground parking in Springvale IKEA. The strange thing was that, mine is a SUV and it was parked well within my parking lot. The car which hit mine had driven to it's front and strange that the driver can not see the SUV in front. When I came back to the car after shopping, the Mazda3 had come into my parking lot and hit from back of my car and the driver has gone for shopping leaving the car as it is. I don't know whether the driver was so genuine to leave it as is or very bad and don't care about others. I couldn't even get to open my boot to put the kids pram back in the car. There were many similar parks on it's bonnet and bumpers to show that it's his normal habit of parking. I took some pictures and wait for them to show up for 10 minutes and had to leave. I never reported it and felt very bad when the brand new car (just 2 months old at that time) had big scratches in the back bumper. I still have the pictures but didn't do anything with them.
If I had a video from front and back I could prove that mine was parked when that car hit mine.

    • +2

Maybe, 'gravity' will turn it on… :S

  • +1

Do you have any on special which are HD and have GPS?

    • This particular listing for $45 does not come with a rear camera, we sold out of those models recently. :(

  • +1

What is the battery life / battery capacity of these rep? Do they come with car charger (ie 12v cigarette lighter) cabling or is that extra?

    • +1

Definitely comes with car charger. Also can be charged via USB cable (provided).

Battery life ranges unit to unit, if you switch the LCD screen off while recording we've had sample footage record for over 1 hour in HD.

Before buying a dash cam look at this site -
    http://dashcamtalk.com/dash-cam-comparison/

  • +2

    Relevant link; http://dashcamtalk.com/dash-cam-comparison/

Seems to be this one: http://dashcamtalk.com/k6000/
    and this one: http://dashcamtalk.com/i1000-f70/

but I can't find the last one.

  • +3

So this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=28089… which is the same as the OP's $50 one, you can get delivered for $34.50 US?

hmmm, longer delivery time but saves ~$10

    • +2

I don't personally know that seller but I do recieve a bit of feedback from buying from that type..

IF they are Chinese based eBay sellers, they are a bit more difficult to deal with and probably won't respond to any questions or problems.( Most of the time they don't even understand what you're saying when you make contact). You may get a cheaper price but I suppose there is no guarantee that as it travels from china in minimalistic packaging it will be in one piece or arrive at all. There is also the probelm with sending the product back OS for warrenty issues.

      • John Howard introduced GST in 2000, plus we have import tax…has to be passed on I'm afraid :/

We typically compete with lower prices by compensating with service and delivery :)

      • +3

Most of the time they don't even understand what you're saying when you make contact

        Just use Google Translate…

        然后,他们会理解你

Interesting, so I'm assuming the ones you are selling at cost price are not made in china?

        • They're made in China. The packaging and quality are checked again on arrival here in Aus, thus negating the aforementioned transit issues

      • the GST is for imported goods over $1000, if you import 20 $45 - 720p High Definition Digital Camcorder valued at $900, you can get rid of the GST easily.

btw, what's the meaning of "Hehe"?

    • If you don't want to buy online you can get this Uniden iGo Cam 300 for $58.00 at JB & $68.00 at Officeworks.

Price match at Officeworks $55.10 -

It's fairly new so hard to find any reviews, but at least if you have a warranty issue it will be much easier to deal with.

  • Well Russians have their dash cams recorders on continuous.. and they have awesome crashes crazy stuff like cars doing forward flips. Maybe you could buy a 5000mah power bank if its compatible with one?

    • You could just leave it plugged into the cigarette lighter, Otherwise if you are a bit savy, hard wire another power point piggy backing off the 24v connection going to the cigarette lighter. I'm actually waiting for a hard wire kit to come in to try myself. :) hopefully i won't see any forward flips whist driving however!! Or Russian Meteors :|

      • +1

        Hmm, gonna have to pass.
My car (and everyone else's) is only a 12 volt system.

        • +1

Sorry i meant 12v. its getting late :(

  • I cant see how it sticks to the windscreen ?

    • If you are talking about the $45 cam, it slides onto a bracket which is mounted onto the windscreen via 3m style adhesive strip. These strips are easily removable.

  • How does the 720p camera stay mounted to the screen? The other two show pictures with a suction cap.

    Thanks!

    • 3m style adhesive strip. The previous model came with suction mount however a few people complained they were quite large

      Thanks

      • Thanks for replying so quick!

Dicing up between the 720 and the 1080p. The 720p has 'night vision'? is this feature also present on the 1080p?

        • +1

No problem. The night vision described refers to the 4 IR lights around the camera. In practice this would be handy if you wanted to record passengers inside the car.. in the dark :) - like a taxi or small van. Doesn't really apply when facing the road as your headlights will surely overpower the IR light.

      • +2

When you fix a camera for the security reasons, wouldn't it attract thieves when the big clearly visible camera is mounted on your wind shield. It can be very visible to out side.

  • Rep,

How do these cameras react to extreme heat and sunlight?

    • Hi, On hot days i would suggest not leaving them in the sun. All plastic is affected by UV which could cause the mounts to become brittle.

      • I usually drive down to Melbourne from Sydney for Christmas so for the 9-hour stretch I can't use this?

        • yes you can, just leave it plugged into your car 12v socket (aka cigarette lighter)

        • Actually it depends on the memory card you use with the device. ie 32gb is the max, that should be around 4-6 hours absolute max. Then it will just overwrite.

        • I meant the heat. Can be rather hot facing the sun driving for hours.

        • Lucky its not summer atm

  • +12

Just wanted to thank the rep for answering a lot of questions!

    • +11

You are very much welcome :) thanks for the positive response

    • +1

I have purchased the same cheap camera, think I paid $19.
the saying is correct, you get what you pay for.
video is blurry, electrical interference on the video.

  • +1

Just bought one, was going to get it from a seller in china, but last time he stuffed up my order, so i look forward to receiving mine soon REP ! =]

  • Price seem to be pretty much standard for HK delivered stuff, the only bonus here is shipping out of WA.

The $50 one, for example, is uinder $47 delivered on Tinydeal. Tindydeal was the only place I looked, so could be cheaper elsewhere.

    shrug

    • +1

      the $50 looks better ;P

      • It… looks… identical. Because it is.

  • what is the dimension of the 720p version ?
    screen size/resolution ?

    • Hi buddy 2 inch screen :)

  • How long will the battery last not being plugged into the charger on Motion Detect Mode?

    • Which model are you referring to specifically ?

It varies dependent of course on how often the detection is triggered but it is usually 4~ hours with intermittent activation

  • do you sell the DVR-207? http://dashcamtalk.com/dvr-207/
