this is quite a dated model. Better choice for reception and no rabbit ears is the Aldi model originally branded Tevion and now Bauhn. A few weeks back $25.

These won't work unless you are in a really good reception area, there are much better indoor antennas from DSE.

    • Like what?

I'm renting and tried this http://www.oneforall.com/product/index/id/159/title/sv-9325/… for $99 (as a had a $100 voucher at JB Hifi) and it did bagel/nothing/zero. There is an antenna point on the other side of the room but the owners are being turbo douches and not allowing me to drill a hole into their precious floor.

Let me know as I'm definitely interested to alternatives that may give me some sweet sweet FTA action.

      • I have no idea what is the best, but here is my personal example.

I had what the OP posted, got all the channels but it was mostly not watchable.

I got a special Digital TV Antenna, could barely watch anything

I borrowed somebody else's special digital TV antenna, could barely watch anything.

        Borrow this http://dicksmith.com.au/product/L4069/indoor-tv-antenna-with…

Worked almost perfectly and its not even made for digital TV.

It really depends where you are and if its distance or what your antenna is.

In other words, there is no one solution unless you get a roof antenna.

        • Thanks man, appreciate it.

    • I disagree. Bought one for $50 when I moved to somewhere without an external aerial, had tried 'normal' rabbit ears etc without any success. Have been using this for 5 years incl in a changeover to digital (both with a set top box then a digital tv) and haven't missed a beat.
Infact a benefit of these is if you're having reception trouble you can move it round a bit or increase/decrease power. Can't do that with a Roof top aerial!

These only work if you live like 5km from the transmitter.

  • I can attest to these not being effective in areas with already poor reception.

Yes, they are somewhat better than standard rabbit ears antenna.
No, they are not going to magically to fix your reception issues.

  • I have a really old one of these. When I have problems with reception at home, use this and it does actually make a difference, even with digital.

Admittedly I am pretty close to the transmitter, but I have no idea why my normal in-roof antenna gives flaky reception some times…

    • In roof? If it's under a tin roof, you'd be lucky to get anything.

If it's under a tile roof, the problem is probably caused by the tiles getting wet, either through rain or condensation (i.e. dew, fog, etcetera).

Or you could just have a broken antenna wire, quite common. If you have a multimeter:
      - disconnect the coaxial cable from the antenna or antenna+balun
      - check the cable at the TV end, it should read open-circuit
      - short the cable at the antenna end (stuff a scrap of alfoil into the plug)
      - check the cable at the TV end, it should read less than 10 ohms (usually substantially less)
      - remove the alfoil and reconnect the cable to the antenna.

If you don't get the above readings, something is awry. Maybe a broken or shorted cable, maybe a splitter is hidden somewhere in your roof space.

Also, double check that your antenna is aimed correctly at the TV transmitter towers.

  • Bought it, took it back.
    Did not work for me.

    • Bonus is you could take it back - better than buying it online and not being able to. Worth a try if people can easily get to a DS & back.

  • Man I used one of those for years. Had it with a bunch of extension cords and sticky tapped to the roof. Worked a treat.

Then I moved and found a pair of $6 rabbit ears from GoLo did a better job.

If the signal is poor these will only amplify the noise.

I had the same one years ago and had no luck whatsoever. Ended up making a Frankenstein version of some old rabbit ears with coat hangers which was better.

I personally think they're all rubbish but sometimes you gotta try something if you have no other way. This whirlpool thread shows a few success stories using the Crest LS2000 from BigW at around the same price, $28.

    • Having just purchased the Crest LS2000 I'm happy to report it's working much better than any other indoor antennas I've tried.
