  • wow, it's cheap. 1000AUD for that laptop at umart. I will wait for windows 7 before purchasing new laptop

Great find, but don't be fooled into upgrading to 4gb ram, 32bit Operating systems will only work with up to 3gb, so anything more than this is a waste of money as it will not aide performance (or be recognized by the operating system).

    • unless this notebook has a 1Gb video card (which it doesn't), then you are terribly mistaken. 32bit supports up to 4Gb

yup, my Dell XPS m1330 is 32bit and got 4gb ram here XD

        • Wrong! You will never see 4GB addressable RAM on a 32bit machine. Simple as that. Max you can expect to see is 3.75 GB but realistically depending on Video and other devices you will see between 3-3.5 GB.

          • @BlinkyBill:

I CAN EXPLAIN THE 4GB RAM HYPE

4GB Ram will not be completely allocated when using Vista 32Bit. BUT!!

Some computers (recent models) come with 4GB ram and Vista 32Bit - and Vista SHOWS 4GB ram - but doesn't allocate it. So a patch has been released as a purely cosmetic way of showing exactly how much ram the unit has even if it won't be allocated.

          • @BlinkyBill: ……..you do realise that 32-bit supports 4Gb of RAM and that it also INCLUDES the RAM on your video card (ie, those with a 512Mb card and 4Gb of RAM will have the computer read 512Mb (from vid card) + 3.5Gb (RAM)) and those with a 256Mb card will have 3.75Gb of the 4Gb RAM utilised.

Well according to Vista, 1Gb for video memory and 3Gb for System. The 4Gb is an example, the laptop has 2x PC5300 DDR2 slots. You can choose either 1x Gb + 2Gb or 2Gb + 2Gb. Either way the standard 1Gb is not enough for Vista. Other option is to install WinXP.

        • Yeah sure install WinXP on a Core 2 Duo - and experience perfomance loss?? Why?? Becaus you can't be bothered to explore Vista?? Why don't you just use Windows 98 then??

  • Only gripe with the deal is the slow-ass HDD and the integrated chipset. (As you well know, buying graphics cards for laptops is just a pain in the ass)

    • The HDD is not slow, certainly not for a $900 notebook.

  • I think it's definitely well featured than most laptops at that price. a Very hot deal, great HDD, decent C2D. Also I'd like to say that while the X3100 is not as good as a dedicated graphics card, mine in my Macbook is more than sufficient for some light gaming (really). Great find mate and positive vote from me :)

  • HDD not an issue.
While 7200RPM would be optimal, the large 320GB makes for a better drive.
A faster drive may even give off more heat, be noisier, and consume more power- thus giving a shorter battery life.

As stated by others, its the 3100 internal graphics thats slowing down this lappy.

  • Have you tested the battery life on this yet?
I can't seem to find much in the way of reports on that, but the price is very good

    • Sorry not yet and probably never will. As this will be used as a desktop replacement. I would guess 2 - 3 hrs, but don't hold me to it.
