Bunnings - 8.5kg Gas Bottle Exchange $19.60

400

I exchanged a 8.5kg gas bottle at Bunnings yesterday for $19.60 the cages display a higher price, but came up cheap at the register.

Kwik Swap

In and out in 5mins great bargain. Took longer to park the car than it did to perform the transaction.

Don't know how much they were for the 4.5kg bottle - sorry.
Sale duration unknown.

ML.

Has been that price for months….good price but not sure if it qualifies as a bargain since it is their usual price now.

You are right billy but in fairness it is one hell of a bargain compared with most servos.

Bunnings and Masters range from $19 to $22 depending what the local competition is.

Masters or Bunnings are the way to go and way cheaper than other swap and go locations. More info from my previous post of similar deal. Still a worthy post as I would hate to see any OzBargainer pay $38 at a petrol station.

yep paid the same ages ago…

They own the supplier of the gas ie: Westfarmers owns Bunnings and Kleenheat

Kleenheat Gas Pty Ltd is part of Wesfarmers Chemicals, Energy and Fertilisers, one of eight divisions of Wesfarmers Limited, with origins dating back to 1914.

EDIT: shame they charge so much at Coles Express tho…maybe its due to Masters opening up the market.

  • great price, i usally avoid cunnings beacuse i find there stuff a rip off

    • agree must check price before buying (altho did get some garden lights there a few weeks ago on a spur of the moment and checking around turned out to be a good price. (maybe due to end of season)

  • Last time I looked the 9kg swap price at Bunnings was $22.90
So this still feels like a bargain to me!

Thanks OP, n thanks again for posting a copy of your tax invoice. :)

  • My local milk bar refills bottles for $18.
I also get to stand around inhaling gas while they do it.

I figure, refill gas + I get high, for cheaper than a swap over. It's a bargain in my books.

It's a bargain in my books.

      Why no vote then..

    • No address?

    • Last time I got one refilled at the servo, I got home and weighed it and they had only put in 5 kg.
I hope your place is more honest!

  • If you have membership (free) card for stratco, you can get fill up for $19.

Local servo also does $18 bottles and Magnet Mart/Home Hardware match them :)

You will find that exchange cylinders everywhere are only filled to 85% for "safety" reasons. If you pay for a refill you get the full 9kg. They even let you watch as they frantically try and turn it off after it starts spewing out the top. I refuse to do exchange for this little know reason.

MY bottle says filled to 8.5kg so based on a 9kg bottle that is 94% capacity. My time is worth more than the few cents i lose in getting an under filled bottle compared to standing around waiting at a servo for a manual fill.

Gas refills have been that price at Bunnings since Masters came along and forced them to drop their prices, it's nothing new/special (but yeah they dont' display the new price on the cages).

For cheaper gas-refills in the S.E. Suburbs of Melbourne:
Milk bar at 46 Halton Rd, Dandenong North, Vic, sells their 9L gas refills at $17.99 - last time I was there.
Lucky 7 Eildron Mini Mart, 85 Eildron Parade, Rowville had an advertised special for 9kg Gas Bottle Refill at $14.99 - but I don't know if that's expired or still available.

  • thats pretty cheap.

  • Masters on Toorak road is $19.40

Beats $45 at my local servo. Good deal.

This is great. I've been unhappily paying $30 to $35 for years and thought the price was the same all over. Excellent post.

how about a + vote then mate

  • Great Price. Local petrol stations have over $25 for the exchange or refill.

  • There are about 2 litres to a kg of lpg, so why does bottled lpg cost still so much more than automotive lpg?

    Pete

    • Auto LPG is usually a mixture of Propane and Butane. Generally the % of each gas can vary between blends. BBQ gas is usually 100% Propane.

  • do bunnings accept any bottle?

i have a bottle from a different exchange program

    • +1

Should do. (unless "expired" or rusty but most people don't ever check.)

    • Bunnings is Kleenheat, Masters is Swap n go.

All usually accept the others or even blank bottles of the same size as you get "in to their system".

Also, if you have an old personal bottle at home that is about to expire, this is a good way to swap it for a new bottle. Most places would also accept expired bottles or don't even check. Again, it will work out for them in the long run as your are likely to return for refills.

    • They accept expired bottles too, says so on the swap'n'go website.

  • Yeah $19.60 is Bunnings regular price for 8.5kg. For the smaller size bottle (not sure the exact size) they charge $17.

  • Cheers op. need to fill up, and was unaware of this pricing. gave a 6 year old rusty container and all sorted… Happy days :)

      @ Wiz187
reminded me that my swap bottle had a nasty rust spot right where it leant again the trolley-
every time you moved the BBQ it scrapped more paint/coating/rust then deep rust away,
then Bunnings gave me a brand new no marks at all swap…happy days is right.
