D-Link DIR-865L Cloud Gigabit Router $129 at DickSmith

2911

User edit 0740 9/5/13: Price adjusted. Now $129 ($29 after cashback).

Edit 1100 10/5/13: Cashback exclusion list now includes DSE. Purchase at your own risk.

Edit: Here is the reply from D-Link via email: "This new Ts and Cs only applicable for any purchases from 10/5 onward".

Edit: Here is a clearer cut-off point, straight from their again-updated terms and conditions: "Limit 1 per person per household only. Excludes Officeworks, Dick Smith, E-Bay & Unauthorised E-Tailers, applicable to all other retailers and channel and cannot coincide with any other offers. DIR-865L purchases from Dick Smith after 10/5/2013 10am AEST will not be eligible for this offer (previous purchases before 10/5/2013 10am AEST will be honoured)."

So that is it. The deal technically expire now since they no longer offer cashback for purchase from dicksmith. HOWEVER, REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN ALWAYS PRICEMATCH AT JBHIFI OR HARVEY NORMAN, IF YOU CAN FIND STOCK AT DICKSMITH

Basically, the same deal at Dicksmith at http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/101972 but D-Link just have their new cashback promotion where they give $100 Cashback to purchases at ANY AUSTRALIAN STORES (except Officeworks).
I have checked dicksmith stock around Melbourne and plenty have stock.

  • Anyone knows since when did the terms and conditions changed?

    • When I called them (see above) I was told the change was made "yesterday".

    • Got the same reply :)

posting this personal contact info isnt very nice

so the cut off is 10/5 or when the t&c changed

this is pretty decent all round and very "un Acer like"

      • +3

good move on behalf of D-link to honour the deal for purchases before 10/5, even though we all signed the form that we agree on the terms and conditions of promo , one being "D-Link reserves the right to change or terminate this offer at any time without prior notice"

+1 for Dlink for being such good sport

    • This Patrick guy must be flooded with emails!

      • more like his PA

      • +2

Hence, change to terms and conditions again:

Limit 1 per person per household only. Excludes Officeworks, Dick Smith, E-Bay & Unauthorised E-Tailers, applicable to all other retailers and channel and cannot coincide with any other offers. DIR-865L purchases from Dick Smith after 10/5/2013 10am AEST will not be eligible for this offer (previous purchases before 10/5/2013 10am AEST will be honoured).

        • Lucky I bought it 8/5/2013, applied online on the same day and mailed on 9/5/2013.

Also bought from JB instead of DSE.

But I cannot understand why DLink did that, normally whatever price we bought is nothing to do with them, unless there is some deal between them and retailers.

    • +1

      Top work mate, well done!

      • Any way to find out whether they have received my mail or not? Just to make sure.

        • Use registered post

        • Yeah of course but I have already use standard post.

But I think I can call them to find out like last time the HN cash back deal.

        • I used express

        • Express post doesn't require a signature, unless you pay an extra $2.95 for signature on delivery.

        • at least you can track that it was received by someone

  • Still a cheap router I guess, but I don't think their terms of service can legally work like that.

Think about it, you could just Offer $1000 cashback on everything and then revoke it a week later.

    • exactly. no way they can backdate something like that. accc would love to get involved if that's the case!

      • I don't see any issue with what they have done though.
They didn't say "We exclude Dick Smith" but they actually specified from which day forward.
Sorta like a "Early Termination" of the cash back for dicksmith customers.

So your example of the $1000 doesn't make much sense in this case.

  • Damn. I brought mine home and set it up straight away. I really wanted it for the bridge mode. It works fine for surfing the net and emails ect however when I am playing BF2 or 3, sometimes the game just hangs for about 5 secs and then keeps going and ill be dead! It has never done it until I started using this router. Anyone else having similar troubles in bridge mode? Other than that it seems like a real well built piece of hardware.

    • update the firmware

can anyone see the bridge menu?

      cant find it

      • Thanks buddy.
Updated it straight away however still the same problem.

        • its a bit confusing… theres official 1.03 but also 1.04 and 1.05 which is EU or US Only

      • Setup>Internet>Manual internet Connection Setup>Enable Wireless Bridge

Download the manual, makes things so much easier!

I'm using mine as a bridge at the moment and its working prefectly! Better speeds and a much more reliable connection than before when I was just using my wireless card…..

        • Same here. Much more stable than the D-link 505 that I was using until I found a cheap replacement. Any idea if an external HDD will work with bridge mode? I've plugged one in but can't see it. haven't played much but was just hoping it would work.

    • bridged mode is working well for me in 5ghz mode.

Haven't used it for gaming though.

      • just out of curiousity i upgraded to the "EU only" v1.05

        works fine

  • Hi All,
    Thank OP for your post.
I got on from JB Hifi yesterday for $129. There were couple left over. Had to go in twice, first was refused by a rather rude person. Second time i dealt with the manager honored the deal with smile.

  • Does anyone know How I can connect my older router to this one and extend my wireless range?

      • Just tried it but it requires a powerline network to set up the second router - is wired the only way to do it?

        • Powerline network is optional. The first choice is an Ethernet cable.

          Article 1

Now take an Ethernet cable, plug one end into another unused router switch port and the other end into one of the AP's LAN ports.

          Article 2

This can be easy if you have Ethernet cabling…
But if you don't have CAT5 run to where you want to place the AP, consider connecting it via powerline networking.

But it sounds like you want to do everything wirelessly. That is the function of a wireless repeater. http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-basics/3157…

But take note of the warning

No matter what they are called or technology they use, repeaters start out with a minimum 50% throughput loss.

        • Oh alright, thanks. So the main way using an AP is to hook it up with an ethernet cable?

        • +1

So the main way using an AP is to hook it up with an ethernet cable?

The only way of using an AP is to hook it up with an Ethernet cable. Otherwise, the device is not working as an AP.

          Access Point

Connects wireless clients (laptops, tablets, mobiles) to an existing LAN, does not form a LAN
          Clients ↔ (wireless) ↔ AP ↔ (Ethernet cable) ↔ switch/router/modem-router/server ↔ (elsewhere)

          Wireless Bridge (DIR-865L bridge mode)

Connects locally wired clients to an existing remote LAN wirelessly, does not form a LAN
          Clients ↔ (Ethernet cables) ↔ DIR-865L/Bridge ↔ (wireless) ↔ AP/router/modem-router/server ↔ (elsewhere)

          Switch

Connects clients by Ethernet cables, does not form a LAN on its own
If a DHCP server is connected to the switch, then a LAN is formed. If no DHCP server is connected, then all clients must use either static IP or use APIPA to form a LAN.

          Wireless Repeater

Connects wireless clients wirelessly to an existing LAN, does not form a LAN
Copies existing wireless signals, amplifies and re-broadcasts, 50% throughput penalty

          Wireless Ethernet Router (DIR-865L)

          4 functions

          1. Connects Ethernet clients to form a LAN
          2. Connects Wireless Ethernet clients to form a LAN
          3. Joins up Ethernet and Wireless Ethernet to form a single LAN
          4. Bridges LAN and WAN to give Internet access
          Wireless Ethernet Modem Router

Adds ADSL Modem to Wireless Ethernet Router

  • So people who purchased the router from DSE before the 10/5 will be honoured? I did not get a chance to claim/print out the previous form that did not include the exclusions. Will that be okay or will I have to find a spare copy from somewhere else?

  • +2

According to their terms and conditions, as long as you purchased it (your receipt dated) before 10am 10 May 2013, that is going to be ok regardless of which form you use

  • FYI: I had some trouble with loopback. IE. accessing my local servers via the Public IP on the internal network.
Upgrading it to v1.04 available on the Canadian website fixed the issue:

    http://www.dlink.com/ca/en/home-solutions/connect/routers/di…

  • Is anyone in Melbourne willing to sell their free router at a reasonable price?

  • DSE did not have stock within 100Kms around Sydney from the time this deal was posted. Even now with the increased price they do not have any stock in or around Sydney. So what is the use of advertising this product on their website?

    • +8

Presumably for people who aren't around Sydney?

    • Not really I saw a few got reserved at Warringah Mall by the time this was posted. I have to price matched at JB, so just we were not fast enough.

Actually the lady at DSE told me we could call to reserve if click and collect didn't available.

    • DSE had plenty of stock in Sydney when this was first posted. They ran out of stock very quickly though. When I ordered mine in the South West (within 100km around Sydney) most stores around my place had stocks. Within 20min most were listed as having "Low Stock".

  • +1

I'm glad Dlink are still honouring the purchases made before the 10th. (Well done Dlink!)

  • I bought from DSE on 4 May. Can i claim ??

    • Only for purchases between 6/05/2013 and 7/06/2013

      Sorry

    • You should have checked Ozbargain sooner, gone to DickSmith, made a deal with them to refund the old one and purchased the new one immediately before 10am 10 May 2013

      • +4

If you kindly ask Doctor Who, he might take you back in time in the TARDIS to do the above^

    • If it's unopened get a refund then try get a price match from another retailer.

  • I got this router at Cairns Central 4870 JB HiFi for $120 they beat the $129 price even though Cairns has no stock within a couple hundred kilometres. +1 for JB HiFi!

  • Price matched this for $129 at JB HiFi Preston!

    • When? Today? You are very lucky.

      • Yep, walked in they and they price matched no problem, didn't even check if Dick Smith had stock. I was surprised they price matched as well!

        • Could you upload the pic of receipt?

          Thanks

  • Bought this for $125 from JB, 25$ for this definitely super winnnn!

  • JB price match successful today at DSE Perth (Enex100) $129.

  • Not many JB stores have this in stock. May explain some of the success on price matches.

  • Just bought one from JB HiFi in Moore Park Supa Centre. Price matched $129 with Dick Smith, no questions asked, they scanned it and said OK. Saw 3 more on their shelves.

    • You must be the one the staff was talking about when I grabbed my one. 2 more left :-)

      • +1

They have restocked. Four available, one bought by me, three left but they will restock again (as opposed to leaving an empty space on the shelf).

Me: "DS is advertising this for $129. Can you match this price?"
Sales: "Oh shit, that's really cheap."

Sales took out iPhone, searched "Dick Smith DIR-865L", went to the first link which is this OzBargain page :-)

Sales read OzBargain, found out we are not DS, went back to Google for DS web page. Checked to confirm $129 is advertised, pressed "Check Store Stock" but his iPhone wouldn't load the checker.

Sales: "Okay, I will match the price."
        Me :-) :-) :-)

Me at payment counter: "Can you process this payment in separate $99 and $30 transactions?"
        Staff: "Why?"
Me: "My bank charges 5% extra if the amount exceeds $100."
Staff: "Okay. You are smart. Savings or credit?"
        Me: "Just tap" :-) :-) :-)

  • I just tried to register for the cashback and it says the serial number has already been registered.

    Emailed [email protected]

Lets see how they resolve this.

    • LOL, looks like somebody did a dodgy, and bought it…. registered it, then returned it. haha

      • Yeah some store didn't cover the serial number, some may have copied the number and found a receipt.

        • The ones i bought from DSE didn't cover their SN. I don't think many places bother.

    • +2

Lets see how they resolve this.

When they respond, send them both the following:
      1. Proof of Purchase (receipt)
      2. Proof of POSSESSION (take a photo of the Router showing the serial number together with the front page of the current daily newspaper (eg. SMH, with the date and at least one article prominently visible).

    • +6

Patrick sorted it out, and the dodgy person has been blacklisted.

  • Successfully pricematched yesterday in Shepparton, VIC:

JB Hifi had 5 or 6 in stock but had received a memo about DSE "error" and would not match the $84.50 but was happy to match $129 no questions asked.

Harvey Norman matched the $84.50 with a screen print from DSE website and HN Coburg receipt from this post. Told me cost price was $200 so they were losing plenty of money, but they are now out of stock.

  • Received a email this morning for "Click & Collect" $84.50 reservation from Bowral Store 299 Bong Bong Street Bowral, NSW 2576 … anyone need it?

    • Nobody can redeem the cashback so its not that useful anymore (still a cheap router though)

  • Ahhhh, just filling out form and found out the 10th issue.
Bought it on the 10th at 12:21 but 10am is the cutoff
Click and collect was on the 8th though.
Emailed them, i wonder if it will still count ???

    • I have a similar problem Click & Collect on the 8th and collected on the 11th. I'd be interested to hear what reply you'll receive ?

      • photoshop ;)

      • I received a reply the same day (today).
From Patrick saying he WILL honour this.
        Send a email chop chop ! :)

        • Thanks mate - email sent - fingers crossed…

        • Update : I also got a positive reply very promptly. :-)

  • -1

Damn it.. I want this router, but seems there's no stock anywhere in Perth so JB won't match it!

    • Try JB @ Gateway, DSE Cannington have a couple this afternoon.

      • -1

Cheers for that, bit too out of my way though as I'm NoR!

  • I bought two and have two receipts….anything on receipt to match serial number of unit?

    • my receipt got the serial number on it

  • +4

so… if anyone is still interested in this router and cashback.
you can get it from here for $139:
    http://flingshot.com.au/products/d-link-wireless-ac-1750-dua…

checked with Dlink, they said 'Yup', the flingshot is authorized seller.

    • Thanks dude! I was genuinely interested in this router and looking at it the day before this post went up. Thought I would be wasting me time checking this post now, but thanks to you it was worth it :)

  • +1

Got my cheque in the mail today, all hand written ! Wonder how many this guy had to write out.

    • …..was it Regular Mail or Registered Mail… .?

      • Regular mail, just an envelope with D-Link logo on it

        • When did you send your application for cashback?

        • -1

I want to know as well.

        • sent it off 1st of May with a $126 price match reciept from JB

        • +1

Your cashback cheque is from the JB-exclusive offer, not this one. This one is for purchases from 6 May and is non-exclusive.

        • Yeah if bought from 1st May it is difference offer.

        • ohh right, well I hope everyone gets theirs soon !

    • That was fast. I am still waiting for my cheque from the JB-exclusive cashback previous to this.

  • This deal is still going. DSE Brisbane has one in stock for $129. Just got JB hifi to price match. Note that you can't get the $100 cash back if you buy it from DSE.

As every Ozbargainer knows, persistence is crucial.
